Pain in right knee leads to surgery for Blazers' Oden

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Trail Blazers center Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, will undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery this week because of pain in his right knee.

An MRI taken last week showed Oden may have some cartilage problems, general manager Kevin Pritchard said Monday.

A timetable for Oden's return will be set following the surgery, which will take place Thursday in Vancouver, Wash. The Trail Blazers open training camp in three weeks and the regular season starts Oct. 30...

Cartlidge problems?? My father has had cartlidge problems for years. It causes a lot of pain. If there is a tear in the cartlidge, they will cut out the smallest pie shaped wedge that they can, so that the cartlidge doesn't touch. The pain is caused by the cartlidge touching.

If this is in fact the problem this is BAD news for the blazers. The pain will go away, but he will never be the same, he will most likely be slowed some. Also, the recoupe can take up to 6 months to be completely healed.

Okay, am I the only one who actually thought the Kings may have dodged a bullet by NOT getting Oden in the draft?

Can you imagine the talk around here if by some miracle we had drafted him and this came out? There'd have to be a suicide watch on every single structure, bridge, and ladder anyone could possibly jump off of.

I was actually thinking the same thing when I saw it. They passed a big time talent (Durant, Jordan) too.

They had no choice but to pick Oden and since we don't know how bad this actually is predicting this to be Bowie/Jordan all over again is a bit premature since Durant hasn't played one NBA game either. I think the Bowie/Jordan thing is a bit overplayed as it is, but that's for another thread.

We do have plenty of bridges to jump off of here though so it would be pretty hard to watch them all

I understand (since you live in Portland) that Blazer fans must keep positive (to keep from jumping off those bridges). No one predicted a Bowie/Jordan thing at all. It was simply a mention that, "Hope this doesnt turn out to be a Sam Bowie situation all over again for them, that would suck." And, you are right in that no one knows how bad Oden's situation really is. I have to imagine that most of us wish him the best. I know I do.

Absolutely I wish him the best. He's just about to start a great journey known as an NBA career. I hope he come's out of this, and it's not serious at all. Even though he's not on the Kings I'm sure I'd enjoy watching him turn into a beast.

Don't think I would mention the "Bowie" situation until - A - Kevin Durant plays a game and shows he's worth a darn, and B - we know that Oden is going to suck or be injured permanently.

That being said, I wish the best for Oden and Blazer fans. Having knee problems would be a bad way to start an NBA career.

Um guys, pending an announcement of a more serious problem, this is nothing. Half the guys in the NBA had cartliege problems of one sort or another. Seems your knees weren't made to take that kind of pounding year after year. I remember when Magic Johnson used to have his annual tire change every summer, where they would open up his knee and scrape out all the loose stuff to get him ready for another season.

If it turns out to be a microfracture situation, well that's one thing. Then its are you Amare Stoudemire, Zach Randolph or Jason Kidd, or are you Penny Hardway, Chris Webber or Allan Houston?

But if its just an arthroscopic procedure you are talking outpatient, walk out of the hospital same day, and be back on the court within 4-6 weeks. A nothing on the injury scale.
