Nowitzki had to be helped to locker room

Associated Press
DENVER -- All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki had to be helped to the Dallas locker room after twisting his left ankle in the Mavericks' game against Denver.

The Mavericks said Nowitzki had a sprained ankle, but he still was in a great deal of pain after the game Sunday. An MRI was scheduled for Monday.

"We don't know how bad, but it is not good," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We can't catch a break with injuries. We have done well up to this point, but like I said before, the one guy we can't afford to lose is Nowitzki and now we have lost him for a while."

Nowitzki was injured with 2½ minutes left in the second quarter when he shot a fadeaway along the baseline and came down on the foot of Denver forward Nene. Nowitzki was on the floor in front of the Mavericks' bench for several minutes and couldn't put any weight on his ankle as he was taken to the locker room.

"I rolled it pretty bad, and will wait and see what happens after the MRI tomorrow," Nowitzki said.

Dallas' leading scorer and rebounder with 27.3 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, Nowitzki had scored over 30 points in five straight games and had 11 against the Nuggets before the injury.

A three-time All-Star, Nowitzki has had problems with ankle injuries in the past. He hasn't played a full season since 2000-01 and missed five games last season because of a sprained ankle.

I feel bad for Dirk, he seemed to be playing really well until this injury.

He'll be ok. He's had injuries that "looked bad" before. He tends to overreact to pain and injuries. Better safe than sorry I guess. I still remember him spraining an ankle ("badly") and then dropping something like 31 and 17 on the Kings in Arco in the very next game.

reminds me of our beloved Kings when C-Webb went down last time......especially the "We can't catch a break with injuries" part.........:(

Figures..... I think I have him on the same fantasy team that had Ron Artest.
Grrrff.

Had both Dirk AND Ben Wallace as my two mainstays in the KF official league. Was doing quite well, thank you, until this weekend.

Free win for somebody this week.

I was wondering what was up; he gave me a poor performance on a night where a merely mediocre performance would have won me the week, and I was left wondering, "what the hell happened?"

Well, it looks as though Dallas will follow the Kings down Misery Road. Will Dallas compensate and adapt as well as the Kings to injury adversity? One day it will be Duncan and the Spurs, another day it will be Garnett and the Wolves, and yet another day it might be Bryant and the Lakers, etc., etc.

Maybe the Kings will get through the 2004-2005 season without a major injury?
