ok so i dont see too many posts about the nhl around here but has anybody been watching this post season? ive always wanted to find a reason to get into hockey but havent found the right reason yet. i remember when the rumors started that the maloofs would buy the mighty ducks and there was a small possibility that they would move to sac. i was very ready to be into hockey, then the year afterward, the season was cancelled and it seemed no one cared. this season, especially the post season has been the most interesting for me in trying year after year to get into the sport. it was hard to kinda get into any other sport on oln besides the tour de france but the broadcasts on nbc have been really enjoyable. i think that espn will pick up alot more games next season and does anybody think they will watch? i dont think that hockey will rebound to where it once was but i definately think that viewing of the nhl will increase dramatically next season
 
Hockey is hockey -- its a niche sport in the states with hardcore followers and then widespread apathy. Don't think that's going to change much. Watched the occasional game in Philly, fewer now, + will generally watch some of the playoffs every year just because NHL playoffs are dramtically better than the regular season product. Game 7 tonight was excellent and intense.

But that is as far as I go with hockey. Kind of an amusing sport watching guys on ice skates, but has no real hold + mirrors the season of my preferred sport. Throw in the incredibly offputting childish macho fighting bunk, and the equally offputting obnoxious self-righteousness of many hockey fans, and I am kept safely at a distance wiht no interest in getting closer.
 
There really is very little fighting in hockey anymore, and its not a macho thing. If you've ever been slashed, butted or speared with a stick at game speed you'd understand why fighting was a completely necessary part of old time hockey. The NHL has done a decent job cracking down on stick work but it still happens and that is the major reason for the fighting. But the days of two players dropping the gloves 15 seconds after the first face off are long gone.
 
it truely is a great sport and takes alot of hard work to play just like any other sport. but i cant imagine how beat those players are when they walk into the locker room. doing all the stuff that they do, with the pads, and on skates is really amazing. and i guess that through watching the sissifying of the nba this year, its nice to see a somewhat still brutal sport in the stick and ball category
 
but yes brick, i agree that it has been really hard to get into. every year i tell myself that im going to try and get into it more but it never happens. hopefully next season will be easier with the rule changes and the excitement of this years playoffs. until then, hockey video games are really fun to play
