lofa tatupu should have one merriman is weak as hell, only 60 tackles. Tatupu had over 100 tackles, 2 or 3 sacks, 2 picks, and 1 touchdown.

merriman weak??? lol. you've obviously never watched him play. he sacked payton three times when peyton had only been sacked 10 times the whole year. oh yeah, i forgot weak players lead all rookies in sacks. merriman is being compared to lawrence taylor.BibityBobtyBoom said:

merriman played one good game, lofa played the whole season like a star and should have went to the pro bowl. Lofa deserved it more than any other player, he became the leader of the seahawks defense and is the one of the reasons that the seahawks are in the playoffs, and last time i checked, the chargers didn't even make it. and don't give me that crap about the weak division or schedule, im tired of it.

Sporting News today announced the Seattle Seahawks’ Shaun Alexander as Player of the Year, the Indianapolis Colts’ Tony Dungy as Coach of the Year, the San Diego Chargers’ Shawne Merriman as Rookie of the Year and All-Pro Team in the magazine’s annual NFL Awards.
In his league debut season, Shawne Merriman established himself as one of the NFL’s biggest hitters. As a rushing linebacker in the Chargers’ 3-4 defense, he blew through and around blockers with tremendous power and speed – the kind of weapon few teams possess. Merriman won the voting easily over second-place, Cadillac Williams, of the Bucs.
The 2005 NFL season saw Shaun Alexander become a more complete back and team leader. The skillful running back rushed for 1,880 years, with a NFL single-season record 28 touchdowns and league history second-best 168 points. He also led the NFL in big-play runs (10 yards or more) with 54 and became the first player to score at least 15 touchdowns in five consecutive seasons. Alexander, 28, beat out the Colts’ Peyton Manning for Player of the Year honors, voted on by pro personnel directors.In his league debut season, Shawne Merriman established himself as one of the NFL’s biggest hitters. Despite a difficult season—a mixture of the elation over his players’ achievements and the tragedy of his son’s death near the end of the regular season— Tony Dungy guided the Colts to a league-best 13-0 start and wrapped it up with another AFC South title. Dungy, 50, leads by the strength of his character, not by fiery rhetoric. In a vote by his peers, Dungy received 14 votes, and the Bears’ Lovie Smith finished second with 6 votes.
The Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and All-Pro team honors were determined through voting by 21 NFL pro personnel directors. The Coach of the Year was determined by 26 NFL head coaches.
The Sporting News 2005 NFL Awards will be featured in the Feb. 10th issue, on sale Wednesday, Feb. 2nd.

Can someone please explain to me how Cadillac Williams won ROTY???
I'm stumped.
He had quick start, rushing for over 400 yards his first 4 games, but then rushed for a measly 700 over his next 12 games. Is it because he's a running back and is more known?
Here is after first four:
After his first three games where he gained more than 425 yards, here were his stats:
13 yards
Did not play
Did not play
20 yards
29 yards
20 yards
116 yards (against Atlanta)
84 yards
96 yards
112 yards
23 yards
150 yards (against Atlanta)
49 yards.
Those are ROTY stats???
I guess this just comes down to the fans voting and making it a popularity contest. At least Merriman won the ROTY voted on by professional sports writers and coaches.

maybe heath miller could have earned it, or i really don't know, this year was all about the defensive rookies. They really stuck out to everyone, not so much the offense.
