New York Times article on Perry Jones:

bajaden

Hall of Famer
This is an excellent article, though it is a bit long, totalling 8 pages. If all your interested in is info on Jones, then read the first page and then skip to the 4th page and continue on. But if you have the time, read the entire article. As someone a little sceptical of Jones, I found this article helpful.

It doesn't answer all the questions or errase all the doubts, but it does help. Enjoy!

Thanks for posting that -- it was an interesting article. Fills in a lot of the blanks you don't get just by watching the games. In the other thread we've been lamenting that there's no superstar first overall pick in this draft like a Derrick Rose or a John Wall or a Blake Griffin -- but probably Perry Jones is that guy. He's talented enough to be that guy. But then he didn't have the dominant college season that those guys have had and he didn't really have a dominant high school career either which puts it into doubt whether he has the right personality to ever get there.

If I were betting on pure talent, I'd pick Perry Jones first overall. His combination of size, athleticism, and ball skills is pretty unprecedented. Tracy McGrady is the closest comparison I can think of and McGrady was a monster for a while -- but also never shook the reputation of a guy who didn't care enough to will his team to wins. I think there's a chance that Jones becomes the best player from this draft, but as the article alludes to with the Kwame comparison, it's going to depend a lot on what situation he ends up in. He's a point-forward most likely -- you're going to want to give him the ball and let him do his magic. We've already got a lot of guys on our team who want the ball in their hands. It doesn't look like a perfect match on paper, but if he's going to be a superstar we'd be stupid not to draft him anyway and find a way to make it work. This is one of those cases where I'm glad I'm not going to have to make the decision and be accountable for the consequences.

Apparently he's not the guy, according to Sam Amick's twitter:

"Baylor freshman Perry Jones has decided to return to school, according to a source close to him. Just saw @goodmanonfox had the news as well"

I will agree that this was probably not the best financial move for him, while I don't think returning to Baylor of all places to improve his game as a big man would help that much either.

Wow, this draft just keeps getting worse. I thought it was a pretty good draft with Sullinger, Barnes, and Jones in it. Without those guys it's starting to look pretty weak. Hopefully Barnes will declare for the draft but with two of his teammates already returning to school, that's in doubt too.

Yeah, if Barnes pulls out, it basicly makes it a two man draft with Irving and Williams. After that it could be any combination of players depending on the needs of each team. Hey, maybe we get lucky this year and pick either 1 or 2.

Yeah, he does actually compare to McGrady well, at least high school McGrady. Those natural guard skills and athleticism built into a big long frame, but unpolished overall. Like McGrady though, he can really hit, or really miss. It's probably a good idea in theory that he goes back to school (although he's taking a huge risk financially) but I don't know if Baylor is the best place for him (Quincy Miller will be going there next year, he'll probably be the no.1 option.)
