Sacramento Kings On SI

After a successful NBA Draft, Scott Perry and the Sacramento Kings are shifting their focus back to free agency and trades, and have their eyes set on one of the biggest names on the market this offseason. Earlier this week, the Athletic's Sam Amick reported that the Kings were interested in Kuminga, but also noted that the young forward wasn't likely going to end up in Sacramento. Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported that the Kings have surpassed other teams in the last few days and are now the prime destination for Kuminga.

A swing for the fences move that I'd love to see the Kings make but I don't know what GSW would want from us other than FRPs. DDR is kind of redundant to Butler and probably wouldn't work well together offensively at all. Monk is probably not needed either.

Only thing that worries me about Kuminga is the odds are not in his favor that he's going to develop an outside shot. Not only is his 3pt percentage bad but his FT percentage is bad as well and has been for his career.

I like how Kuminga uses his strength on drives. At 22, I'm taking him. At this point I want to see some young players develop for several years. Kuminga would be a hit.

I would be over the moon if we went for Kuminga. If it’s a swing and miss so be it. Out of all the names that have been mentioned as potential additions he’s the only one in my mind that actual has star potential. As a small market team ( specifically this small market team) I feel like we have to take those swings. I’d be open to moving Monk and JV to get it done. Obviously Demar would be preferable but I can’t see Golden State wanting that.

Now we just wait for Kiminga’s market to crater even more to the point the Warriors have to give us a pick to send them Malik.
Despite being drafted 7th overall, GSW never really gave him a fair shot. I get it. They were still in championship mode at the time, and that’s not exactly the ideal environment for a young player who’s still developing. But plenty of title-contending teams before them have traded away high draft picks to bring in win-now pieces. Instead, the Warriors kept him, but didn’t give him the real opportunity to grow, make mistakes, and learn from them on the court.

Then you factor in the team dynamics, where a veteran can physically assault a younger teammate, and the head coach does everything he can to downplay it, it’s hard to imagine that feeling like a healthy or supportive place for a young player.

Honestly, if I were in his shoes, I wouldn’t be eager to return either.

Moody and Kuminga were drafted in the same year so Moody could have held out longer I believe. Warriors have to be careful because if it drags out until September they run the risk of not being able to trade him during the season and their tax bill being insane again. Maybe they are ok with that but sure seems neither side is in love with each other so that's a strange proposition when luxury tax and repeater penalties are in play.

I always thought Brett was in his late 40s based on the blurry profile pic but after seeing him in a live interview he looks like a teenager with a suit on.

I know someone's done this, but what would Kuminga's max deal be for us if we sent them Monk, straight up?
I believe it more depends on what GSW do than anything else - because of Base Year Compensation:
  • Instead of counting the full new salary, the outgoing salary (for the team trading the player) is the greater of: 50% of the new salary or the player's previous salary.
  • The incoming salary (for the team receiving the player) is still counted at the full new salary.
So we can take back Monk's full salary in trade but Golden State has to find a way to receive it and I believe that is the issue as they are over the cap.
