Need Techie Help Re: DVD Decoder

Alright, I just built myself a new computer, but I can't play DVDs in the DVD drive I have in there. It came with a trial-version of Nero only and says I need to buy the full version to use the MPEG-2 Decoder. I tried in WMP 11 and it says I need a decoder pack for full functionality. Basically I get the video but no audio currently with WMP. I checked out the Microsoft help, and they provide links to a few sites where you can purchase a decoder pack for around $15. It's $64 for the full version of Nero 8. Does anyone out there know of a site where you can get the decoder for free?

PM me and I'll mail you an old DVD player software I have if you want it for free. Usually DVD drives come with this software. The two I've bought in the past came with it, PowerDVD and another one I forget the name. Odd yours didn't.

The DVD drive I bought came with a trial version of Nero 8. Maybe its a new trend. I don't know.

I'd recommend a player called VLC. It's freeware, works really well, and supports decoding of almost anything that a codec exists for, whether audio or video. http://www.videolan.org/

I'm going to give this a try. Thanks. Someone at work recommended Media Player Classic. I downloaded that one as well. Video is slightly fuzzy. Hopefully the resolution is better with VLC.

I think you'll like it, it'll work with any number of codecs, and will do things that other players won't. Like letting you use it as a transcoder for turning a DVD into mpeg movie files.* The interface is simple enough that you may never notice all the features, but they're there if you need 'em.

*Lest any mod worry that this is a reference to piracy: no, not at all. I regularly convert movies and cartoons that are in the public domain, and post them on the Internet. No piracy involved, everybody already owns it. :)
