SACRAMENTO KINGS
They have a ton of young guys who are redundant. I worry that they don’t have the veteran leadership and roster balance they need. Aside from Zach Randolph, their bigs, wings and guards are all like a farm team. . . . De'Aaron Fox’s speed plays. The health and durability weren’t there where you want them to be. His lack of shooting comes into play. I think his ceiling is still high but his floor has dropped. There’s bust potential. . . . Buddy Hield’s ceiling has come down fast. He’s shown that he’s a specialist rather than a potential star. He can shoot and fill it up, get hot for stretches, do a little off the dribble, but he’s streaky and a role player going forward. I can see him being a sixth man, offensive firepower type if he was playing for a good team. . . . I thought Bogdan Bogdanovic was their best player last year. He’s tough, he’s got good feel, he knows how to play and score naturally. . . . I would have taken Trae Young and Luka Dončić over Marvin Bagley III. The draft hasn’t been kind to them and that’s why they are where they are. They’ve gambled on a lot of high-risk, high-reward guys and come up mostly empty. [But] Bagley has a real chance to win Rookie of the Year. He can put up numbers on a losing team. . . . Their depth chart is a mess. They might have five centers on the roster. Why? . . . Willie Cauley-Stein looks like a career back-up. He can be productive in stretches and has had every opportunity to emerge as a starting center, but he hasn’t done it. . . . This will be one of the worst defensive teams in the league. None of their best core guys are really plus defenders. . . . Circle these guys as a trade team. They can take on a bad contract or someone else’s mistake and offer some young guys in return. They searched for Rudy Gay and Buddy Hield in the past and I think they’ll try to do that again. They tried to sign Zach LaVine too. I could see them chasing an Andrew Wiggins or a Blake Griffin in a trade. . . . I’m a big fan of Harry Giles. A successful season for them is getting an answer on Fox, Giles staying healthy and becoming a starter, and then Bagley looking like a foundation piece. I think all of those things could happen and they still finish last in the division and win fewer than 30 games.

I totally agree with the last part of what he said; fox, bogdon, giles, and bagley are the keys to our future. Fox, Giles, and Bagley all have to pan out.

He does look like an elite playmaker I’ll give him that
I'm not sure about elite but he's certainly recovered from a Jimmer-esque start to his summer league career. As a prospect though, there's absolutely no world where I'm putting him in the same class as the Lukas and Bagleys of the world.

I don’t know about that player that can create like Luka/Trae are extremely valuable

Trae has (more than Luka) some scary-ish limitations that his playmaking may not overcome. He's an average athlete with below average length and less than spectacular defense. While you're pumping up his playmaking, Trae's more of a playmaker in the IT sense of the word than the Steve Nash/John Stockton sense of the word.

The view as Buddy as a role player/6th man and WCS as a back up to me are spot on which is why I have since last season said to trade both in a package now before the rest of the L figures that out to try get a decent starter back before paying anything to either.

I agree completely apart from two words: Trae Young.

I'm not that pessimistic. You know why? Because I'm a fan. I will always hope for the best. Furthermore, when we had veterans we were criticized of overpaying and overplaying them. Now we are criticized because we don't have veteran leadership. I don't understand why Fox's floor went down either. Anyway, I'm much, much more optimistic than that guy.

I would say Fox's floor went down based on his rookie season really not being that impactful. It is pretty logical to then tailor and adjust expectations, but still allow for a high ceiling given some flashes he showed.

Not saying I'd pick him over Marvin but thought it was appropriate
That shot is a classic example of "bad decision, good outcome". Trae Young makes an astonishing number of bad decisions - it is a characteristic of his play going back for at least his entire year at Oklahoma (I don't know what he did in high school). Trae Young manages to eke out just enough good outcomes from his bad decisions for most people to forget all the bad decisions that didn't work. But in the end, the bad decisions pile up, and they hurt the team.

I tend to be more optomistic as well. If I don't have hope, why bother. This article below might be more your speed, as it was mines.

"Now on the defensive end, as you would expect with a super young team. the Kings stink on that end. I mean really stink. The 27th Drtg in the NBA at 110.3, none of this matters if they can’t figure out how to defend. At the same time, what do you expect on a team filled with rookies? Of course they don’t know what they’re doing at that end. I’m not saying they have to be elite, but with the talent on this team, why can’t they be like…..as good as Orlando? They ranked 20th in the league at 109.3. Imagine what this team would look like if they weren’t giving up 105 a night. If you can’t tell by now, with an improved offense now that guys are used to the league, a slight improvement on the defensive end can make a world of difference for this team. Not playoff caliber or anything, but also not worst in the league type stuff. They already do a great job at defending the paint (4th fewest points allowed), so I believe there is a foundation there to build off of."

From the above article. I agree wholeheartedly. No reason at all they can't get at least to the 20th position in the defensive rating. They have plenty of athleticism to get to that result. Now they just need the commitment. To get to that 20th defensive rating or higher it would help if they don't try to guard a player like D. Mitchell with JJ, or a player like Kuzma with Skal.

I agree with most of the article/ scout report.

MGIII has all NBA potential. So does such and such but blah blah. I think he was a good pick.

Kings will take some risk as this seems to be necessary. But it's not like we are looking at a roster full of bad contracts, players that hate each other, and no mobility.

Like Jason Williams then ? Just with the shooting

I think the idea of the scouting report is that a Trae Young, while inconsistent, is the instant wow-factor type guy. Just like the Jason Williams type, it'll bring excitement back to the city, for better or worse down the road.
