NBA fines Mobley for obscene gesture

^ I agree. Family event???? Fans cross the line more often than players do. Everyone acts like players are superhuman and can stand up to anything. People are human...emotions are uncontrollable. So what...kid's grow up far more faster in this society than everyong thinks. You think kids only hear and see what players do??? They see whatever is happening around them especially hecklers. So yea Mobley is fined...deserved? Maybe...but he is not the only one that should be fined

maybe we should change the RED light around the backboard as it may offend some people especially players:rolleyes:

ya know why going to nba games is no longer a family event? its not cuz of the fans behavior, its cuz ticket prices are too damn high to take the entire family to professional basketball games anymore. leastways, not if yer of the middle class, as i am.

reply to: VF21 ... forgot to QUOTE

I know and understand how you feel .... alot of people across America feel the exact same way.

However, I look at it differently .. in fact whenever I see it happen, I shake my head and look around ... they're all screamin' and hollerin' and as you say, probably didn't even notice it.

I coach youth sports .... basketball and soccer ... age 14-16 yrs.

I will and do ... bench my kids if I see them display any type of unacceptable behaviour on the court or on the field.

Been that way my whole life and coaching career. I've seen other coaches do the same thing, some don't ... in fact, some of the coaches I've come across are just as bad as their players doing it.

Oh well, that's how I am ... works for me and I can look at myself in the mirror every morning and look at my kids, the kids I coach, their parents and feel good about it.

Guess that makes me a RESPECTFUL OLD FART (heh-heh) !!!

I am usually very quick to protest about inappropriate behavior but I think there gets to be a point where distinctions have to be made. I wouldn't make that gesture and any child of mine who made it would quickly find out that I do not think it's appropriate.

The players come to play a game. They shouldn't have to listen to continual and unending profanity from the fans - but they do, in virtually every arena in the land. That, to me, is much more problematic than the occasional response of an athlete, especially when it's just a gesture - and nothing else.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not applauding Cuttino in any way, shape or form for his action, but I can understand how he might have gotten so frustrated that he simply acted first and didn't think.

The idea of being a fan at a sporting event has changed drastically. Hecklers are emboldened out of a mistaken idea that paying for a ticket entitles them to act like total and complete jackasses. People around them do not want a confrontation and so, rather than say anything and become the targets of ridicule and profanity themselves, they say nothing.

You and I aren't really that different in our philosphies. I guess I've just realized there are a lot worse things going on than an occasional gesture. I'm choosing my battles more selectively - at my age, you can't fight them all.

if you're familiar with "pro" wrestling it was most likely the "suck it" taunt where you gesture with both hands toward your crotch. =O

No, it was not like that at all. I'd almost call the gesture "subtle". I don't think the vast majority of the fans could even see if from their angle. I could because the fan was just a few rows in front of me.

I agree that players should behave appropriately. But I have become far more disgusted with fan behavior. And some of those "fans" have their children standing right next to them! Players are human, think about how you would react if someone at your job hollered obscenities at you and screamed that you sucked at your job in vivid language all day. (If that is your life at work, then you have my deepest sympathies.)

And I'm sorry, but I don't think how much you earn has anything to do with it. I don't care whether you make minimum wage or multimillions, you should not have to put up that kind of treatment. Making millions does not excuse other people treating you with extreme rudeness and disrespect. (Having millions does not excuse a person from treating others with rudeness or disrespect either, in case somebody thinks this needs pointing out.)

As for family entertainment being affordable. Unfortunately, most things aren't affordable for families any more. I can better afford to go to a Kings game than to road broadway shows, many other theater events, concerts, ballet, opera. I've gone to Kings games for $10 a seat. Heck, some movies cost that now!

I'm with Cutino.

He didn't hurt anyone. It's hard to be Mother Terresa when you produce testosterone.

I guess we now know what can happen to an obnoxious fan when he finds himself outside the friendly confines of the arena.

My advise to all irritable basketball fans. Try to behave as if you didn't have an army of lawyers, arena security cops, and Laws that protect you from physical abuse.

OK, so how many "dog" nicks are in this forum, anyways? Starting to look like a kennel in here.... :)
