NBA advises the Kings' business team to prepare the season-ticket packages

I maintain firm in my belief that the move to Anaheim was nothing more than a backdoor sell to Samueli. The tea leaves certainly read that way. Samueli is fronting way too much money for this to be strictly an "I want an NBA team in my arena/goodness of my heart" sort of deal. I don't think it was done out of malice, but out of survival, however.

is it not illegal to do a backdoor sell? I know the league would have to approve a new ownership, I mean didnt the guy have an issue with SEC?

IF the kings are forced to stay here will the maloofs also be forced to give their financial info to ICON? Or is this the NBA just telling the maloofs that the anaheim deal is off but they are welcome to explore other cities such as KC or Louisville? And where does this leave the maloofs if they are going broke here in sac? Maybe they will be forced to sell to a group led by C-Webb and bankrolled by Burkle. So many questions.

I already have 9ers season tix but since there will probably not be a season I did not re-up my tix. If the kings stay Im down for 2 season tix. Ill do my part.

There is no reason to leave if there is so much untapped wealth and support.... It may end up looking that the maloof just stopped trying and wanted out instead of looking at other options in SAC, like KJ found ways that the maloofs havent

the financial info SHOULD be looked at even before the decision it will play heavily on why they wish to move to an already overly saturated city?

I hope I would not offend any local sacramento residents here.. at first before READING.. or researching into anything, I thought the market in Sacramento was not large enough for an NBA franchise, after reading into what KJ has done. and also a few backreading (now I know Sacramento is the capital of california) I really believe that its not as bad as it was made by the maloofs to be. that is why I am REALLY curious about their financial numbers..

again sorry If I offended any one.. know that I always support the city and if I get the opportunity its on top of my list to visit ;)

.... if I get the opportunity its on top of my list to visit ;)

I want the Kings to stay in Sacramento, but lets get real. A visit to the US.. or even to California, or even to Northern California... would have to be a pretty long visit to make it worthwhile to squeeze in Sacramento - I mean lets be honest here.

I live here, I love here, I hope to die here... it is beautiful in the sierra foothills. But if I have 30 days to visit Northern Calif and I have to choose a number to spend in Sacramento, that number would be zero (unless you are around during the State Fair maybe).

Now maybe that all changes if we get a killer river walk/sports complex! Maybe that all changes big time.

Got friends living in California, one of my med buddies resides in Sacramento.... so at least I got reasons to make a trip to Sacramento...

Here's the kicker. The maloofs have laid their cards down. We have the lease agreement with Anaheim. It shows what they are willing to do. They cant ask for the pie in the sky demands (Parking, consessions, etc) again because everyone will know they are being unreasonable.

Sacramento is sometimes called a nice place live and a terrible place to visit. When my relatives come here I'm hard pressed after a day or two to have anything interesting and exciting for them to do. At least Tahoe and the Sierras are nearby plus Bay Area with its many attractions from the ocean to Napa Valley, etc. Really Sac is just too damn boring. I do like the bike trail and a couple of other outdoor activities but come on this place is the pits compared to one or two hours east or west of here. I guess that's why living here is tolerable but I'd hate being a tourist in town.

The more I hear about the Anaheim 'deal," the more I scratch my head and wonder what the he** the Maloofs were seeing in this deal. The chance to live on the Gold Coast and hobnob with celebrities 24/7? Some say its greed and money, but what I see is piling on layers of debt for the franchise with Samueli poised to swoop in a take over majority ownership in a short time frame. I know the Maloofs like to be "optimistic," but a shrewd business person knows when to trade in the rose-tinted glasses for a magnifying glass and read the fine print.

I've come to the conclusion that the Maloofs aren't great business people. Their dad was. Anybody can be a pretty good business person when the economy is sailing high. The great business person prepares for when the boat starts sinking. (Although even great business people can fail and most do more than once.) It just seems to me the Maloofs are too enamored of Hollywood and celebrities and the lifestyle, in general. Like star-struck kids. Being in SoCal is the shiny bauble that has them swooming right now and distracting them from looking too closely at the details of this "deal."

excellent post

You've hit the nail on the head. Don't get me wrong, I love sacramento, and live in mexico because its the only place I can maintain my lifestyle on the income I have. But many many years ago, my main selling point for sacramento was that it was strategically located between two places that people wanted to go to. Sort of a backhanded compliment at best. Nothing better than a lazy float down the American river on a hot saturday afternoon though.

yeah, anybody from a real city that's visiting would agree. i live here and can tolerate it because its a great place to raise a family.

I think there is a far greater chance of no NBA season next year rather than no NFL. I am actually pretty confident that there will be an NFL season based on what I have read. Although there might be a game or 2 missed. The NBA is a mess though and this thing is going to get ugly, but I won't care if the Kings stay.

All of my buddies from college are SF and LA guys with a couple of East guys miexed in. Everytime they come visit they have a blast. I take them out to some good resturants then hit up some bars. They rag on Sacramento all the time, but love coming and hanging out here. But I guess it's not hard to find things to do when you have a bunch of guys who love to eat and drink.

I think that changes precisely when the city succeeds in keeping the team and building a new arena.

The city has this inferiority complex and fatalism quality to it that nothing ever gets done, they'll never beat the big boys and an "oh gee look, yet another big idea fell through. Here we go again." mantra.

But if the city beats back a push from SoCal of all places to take the Kings away, keeps the team and breaks ground on possibly the biggest project in city history, that's when Sacramento turns the corner. That's Sacramento's "McFly Punched Biff" moment.

Once the city and region gets that first taste of victory over their biggest bully, just watch what they can do with a little bit of swagger to them.

Here We Rise indeed.

I like that. Does that mean KJ is playing the role made famous by Michael J. Fox?

Getting a downtown arena would be so huge for the soul of Sacramento. I know that for some it doesn't matter but I really think it will keep young people in the area and help build towards a better future. I've been surprised my last few family visits at what's popped up downtown, and building a centralized entertainment core will only improve it.

The kings players past and present most love living here during the season cause it is low key not the fast life like down in so cal or in nyc,miami,chicago,etc... And they are "rocksatars" here and because there "big fish in a small pond" get a lot of perks from living here.

Actually, the latest reports are saying that there might be an agreement in place by july. Apparently the latest offer by the NBA makes some of the concessions that the players have been asking for, or at least grandfathering in some of the things the NBA wants over a longer period of time, and therefore not affecting any players salaries in the present. One of the concessions would be for an eventual hard cap, but at a much higher level than the current one, which is around 58.5 mil. Under the new offer that cap would be raised into the mid to high 60's mil range, with most of the exceptions being phased out over the length of the new CBA.

It seems participants on both sides seem optimistic that something can be worked out and a lockout avoided.

Interesting news about the hard cap. Did the report you read mention anything about substituting the Bird Rights for something like the NFL's franchise tag to help teams keep their key players?

That's great. I have been so preoccupied with the possible relocation and a potential NFL lockout; I haven't been following the potential NBA lockout like I did before. I think the last thing I read was that the players were far more prepared for a lengthy lockout this time around. Thanks for the heads up.
