I can see how we can point the fault on coach Smart when it comes to game management and execution.
But the owners?
Do they really have a direct thing to do with what is happening to Cousins?
And what about the most important person who can easily change things in this team (PETRIE)?
I think more than anyone, this guys name is the guy to blame on whatever bad happening in the franchise (regarding basketball) in this team.
Hmmm. What is Petrie's job title in the organization again?
I am somewhat mystified when people seem to suggest that Petrie works in a vacuum. The fact that this team has scraped by with the lowest payroll in the league for years and traded draft picks for cash are absolute signs that the owner have vast input on what can and cannot be done with the team and its roster.
The owners are 100% responsible for our current coach as well as the string of low quality coaches we've had since Rick. I can guarantee you that if Petrie had full control and open wallets by ownership we would not have lost Rick. And if Rick had decided to leave, we'd have sprung for a good quality coach.
The owners are also 100% responsible for not spending money when needed to bring in quality veterans.
The GM has 3 areas of responsibility.
Drafting
Free-Agency
Trades
Petrie probably has the most control in regards to the draft. But we all know that since Sacramento is such a small market team, it's pretty much impossible to land any sort of quality free agent.
And finally...everyone in the league knows that the Maloofs are broke. That means that when it comes to dealing with the other 29 GMs, Petrie is working with one hand tied behind his back. I hope you can see how much broke ownership can influence the 3 primary areas of a GMs responsibility, especially in a small market team like Sacramento.
I simply don't understand why people think that the composition of this team would be the same in regards to the roster and the coach if the owners were worth 10 billion dollars instead of squeaking by with no means of currently generating revenue.
Sure Petrie can quit if he feels that the Maloofs are not giving him the support that he needs to be successful. But to be frank, if I had one of 30 elite jobs in the entire country, I'm probably not going to walk away from it just because my bosses are idiots. If people walked away from their jobs just because their bosses were idiots....half the country would be in unemployment over night.
I'm not saying that Petrie is perfect by any means. But Petrie has shown to be an executive who can build winning teams if given the financial backing of ownership. So far neither the Maloofs or Coach Smart have shown that they can have success.
Bringing it back to Cousins I will say that all Cousins wants is to win. My guess is that he's close enough to the situation and smart enough to realize that unless something major changes, his situation is a lost cause.
