My Monarchs Depth Chart for 2007

#1
WNBA.com released the list of Free Agents for the off season. Here is my Dream Depth Chart for the Monarchs in 2007 according to the list.

POWER FORWARD
DeMya Walker
Rebecca Brunson

CENTER
Yolanda Griffith
Janell Burse
Erin Buescher

SMALL FORWARD
Nicole Powell
Hamchetou Maiga-Ba

OFF GUARD
Marie Ferdinand
Kara Lawson
Scholanda Dorrell

POINT GUARD
Kristen Haynie
Tully Bevelaqua

Notes - The only way I would part with Ticha is if there was a chance to get someone as talented as Ferdinand. I have coveted her for a long time. Now it is time for Whisnant to make it happen.

As wonderful as Buescher was this year, I do not know if she is the long term answer to replace Yo Griffith after 2007. But I do believe that Burse can be the answer.

Um..Buescher as Yo’s long term replacement? Doubt those words have ever been uttered in the coaches offices @ the MS&E practice facility. That’s not Erin’s role. Brunson is Yo’s understudy to the extent that she should be learning how to do what Yo does better than she looked like she learned it this year. She looked to be headed to remedial school this year. But when Yo leaves it should be Brunson at the 4 and Walker starting at the 5. Your bench is stronger with Buescher on it. But im not sure we’re bringing her back if someone signs her to an offer sheet. (The Bee’s information seems off if I’m to believe the dot.com’s listing, I thought the Bee had Maiga and Buescher as unrestricted and our only restricted FA was Lawson).

Burse is not the prototype post player Whiz likes in his system. He’da kept Anderson around if that’s the type of player he wanted. Of the unrestricted FAs on that list, the one that intrigues me is Pierson. She is prototypical post player in Whiz’ system. And as much as she irritates the hell out of me most of the time, Snow is the penultimate of the Whiz prototype post player.

Ferndinand? If San Antonio stupidly does not core her like they should. (They have a player one step close to retirement who played her position while she was out having a baby) then yep, I’ll volunteer to pick her up at the airport if Whiz is able to make it happen. But I doubt San Antonio doesn’t core her.

I’d make a run at San Antonio’s Thomas and slot her into Maiga’s slot if we were to let her walk. I’d also look at DeForge or maybe even to a lesser extent Canty. Bevilaqua would be nice, but as a free agent that’s a lotta cash to be plunking down on a backup.

We sign majority ofl our free agents plus pick up two long term veteran ones, I think we’re busting near the top of the cap if not over it. Kim Smith I don’t think sits in street clothes next year, nor does Dorrell. So we need to find complementary pieces who affordably fit that role.

Here are my Off- Season Moves

Okay Looking at the FA list there are a couple of names that would be nice.

Tully Bevilaqua- Probably a hard hit against the cap maybe even 93k against the Cap. But she is very good defender, can shoot, attacks the basket and great mentor. Was very instrumental in developing Sue Bird up in Seattle, and you wouldn’t lose a lot going to her in a crunch situation. She has a calming influence in the locker-room, very personable. Not a long term solution but is close to the end of her career and knows how to win and would but very good for Haynie and/or Kara Lawson. If you have the space for it I say why not.

Marie Ferdinand- Do I really need to explain that one? And she may actually be available. And you could bet your sweet Bippy that she would come to the Monarchs. Of course we are gonna have to open a Day Care Center pretty soon. Lots of Beautiful Babies running about. Why not add one more.

Janell Burse- She has a level of athleticism that is really good for a Center. She is a bit dainty for my taste. But she is solid. I personally think she would be too expensive to land. With the Post game that we have to commit more than 60k to her is counter productive, especially with Kara needing more money and Nicole and Bekkahs going into contract years. Besides I am thinking we can land a post player in the draft.

I have a few Sentimental Favs…
I love me some Svet… But she doesn’t really fit into the system. DAMMIT!!!

Dominique Canty- I just like her. But she is older and Injury prone. Something we just do not need. But it could be a possibility, and she is use to handling the ball. So she shouldn’t be absolutely ruled out.

Everyone else is someone that would likely be cored by there own team or not worth looking at seriously.

Restricted FREE AGENT

Anna DeForge- Been wanting her for years. The price would be right. She gives nice offensive punch and she is a decent defender. In the White Line she could be very good. Or maybe that is my wishful thinking. She stated she wanted to be a Monarchs, I would like to see her become one. The Downside is that we may see far more of Nancy Lieberman than we would want but it would be a small price to pay.

Plenette Pierson- Ohhh Boy did I want her. I remember how tough she played us when she was with Phoenix. Again the price would be right. She is very tough. I am pretty sure SFO will match an offer given to her, but I sure would like to see that girl in the Purple.

Erin Thorn- You know… I like her. She is getting a very raw deal in New York and the Liberty fans are basically trying to run her out of town. But in Becky Hammons absence she really filled up the basket. Including against us. Again a player who is Hungry for some success, and I can’t see how she wouldn’t be aching for some new scenery. She wasn’t bad on the Defensive end either. Best part she could be acquired for a very reasonable price.

So with that information available…

What are the needs that have to be addressed?

We desperately Need an experienced Wing player that knows how to score, so if we are active in the FA market that is what I would look for.

If we go with PR’s group, (Which I like) I am not sure Haynie is ready to be a full time Starter. So I think Kara moves to the point. Which is fine. Tully is a great Choice to help run the point. Marie would give us enormous speed and penetrating skills at the 2 guard. She would be great for Sho to learn from. Both have those skills and quickness to dominate from that position. Needless to say landing Marie would be huge. So would getting DeForge. Another player use to handling the ball and extending the Defense. Erin Thorn, Not so Big of a signing. But she can extend the defenses and bargain at that.

IMO I think getting Anna DeForge is a priority.
While Marie is Explosive and Tully is a solid point, Anna has size. At 6’0 she can match up with the bigger guards without giving up offense. Marie is only 5’9 and would get pushed around by the likes of Katie Smith and DT. Anna should be able to hold her own with them and what she gives up on Defense she can get it back. More important, she can also offer an additional 3 guard if necessary, without having to give up Maiga in the process. So if the goal is to try to keep this team in tact, I think that DeForge is a good move. Then again I have been lobbying for her for years.

The Post is not as pressing. And while I do Love Pierson in the paint, I think we have enough post to be able to draft and develop a post player.

Erin Buescher is not a Center. She is a Forward. DeMya will inherit the Center Duties, and Bekkah will slide into the Post when Yo retires.
Personally in picking in the 11 spot I have fallen in love with Kristen Newlin at Stanford.
I mean Hell she is 6’5, long, athletic, runs the floor well, Nasty as she wants to be and she can hit the 3. She flies under the radar because she plays with Brook Smith. I personally think she is better. But she should be around for the 11th pick.
I didn’t think she was 1st round potential but if some one can show me an impact player that will fall that low I would be happen to entertain them. Otherwise, Why not take Newlin in the first round.

This movement doesn’t bode well for our current batch of Rookies. Which totally sucks cause I like them. But Kim is not the answer, Scotty will have a fight on her hands, and Brittany may be in street clothes again if she makes the team. Sho is the only one of that bunch that has some security.
Those are my thoughts… Sure I will add some more.

I'm not sure Kim is not the answer, we hardly ever saw her play. Would LOVE with a capital LOVE to see Newlin here.

Might also entertain the idea of Miao coming back.

Explain to me why Ferdinand is expendable in San Antonio. I can't even fathom that. I'd core her just to put her on the block as trade bait, no way I let her walk to some other team. But someone first has to explain to me how San Antonio makes the determination they don't need her. If they don't win the Latta Sweepstakes, they don't need anybody else in the lottery portion of the draft. And unless Marie has completely forgotten how to play, nobody coming out of college is better than her.

VJ is a year away from retiring so they have a HUGE hole at the 2 spot. UCLA's Quinn is a nice fit there but she should actually play more 3 in the W and they already have a nice complement of those in San Antonio.

Trade bait indeed

MBF---I think your assesment of Marie is correct.

However I think that SASS has continuity going for them now. Marie Could clog up the wheels of their progress. I don't see how but they may feel that they can get better without her.

So yeah They will probably Core her just to get something in return. Then again... I do not know their Cap situation is. She may tie up too much cap money for what they are trying to accomplish.
Center are few and far between in this league, and Chantelle is finally starting to show signs of the Player to keep. Maybe Feenstra will push her again but then who knows. They seem to have almost all of their pieces, although they are kinda old in the backcourt. Pee Wee and VJ are a little long in the tooth.

To be honest the only way I think we could get Marie is to Sign and Trade Ticha for her. Something tells me Marie will command max salary. Then again SASS may be able to get multiple for Marie if that is the route they choose to go.

I would put Newlin in my Signature... but we see what happen last time I did that.
But Man if we could land her... That would have ***CHEW*** written all over it.

I assume we are in agreement about DeForge then huh?

That's gotta be a young team, the only cap hits they could reasonably be taking are VJ, PeeWee and Marie. Thomas' status might make it problematic because they'll have to match any offer they get on her and despite her injury issues - she should have people making runs at her. But they are young pretty much everywhere else. Who do they have behind Marie that makes her expendable? If I'm gonna spend my money in SA, I spend it on Marie, much better long term on investment than anybody else. If they went and signed VJ for more than one year, then yes they screwed themselves and if Ferdinand has to walk/leave, she walks/leaves.

Don't care how badly I want Marie, I don't trade them Ticha for her. Why do I want to make San Antonio better? For that matter, why does San Antonio want to make the 2x defending western conference champions better - so they can continue to chase us in the standings? We should have learned our intraconference dealing lesson with the Frett trade. Taking Ticha's salary back in return for Ferdinand seems to mitigate any cap relief they may be trying to get by dumping her.

If we sign and trade Ticha, it should be with an eastern conf team, and we should get younger players who fill immediate needs in return and put us in good cap position.

A two guard that is athletic, can guard and score is a desperate need for Monarchs. How old is Ferdinand....27, 28, 29. That works for me. I think the Monarchs have gone through their lets get younger stage in letting go Tangela, Ruthie and others and depending upon the draft to build (Maiga, Haynie, Brunson....core players that are young). Now it is time to make the big time trade like Detroit did in bringing in Katie Smith to complete the evolution.

Besides wasn't Ticha's name linked with San Antonio sometime last year? I remember hearing some report about that.

I would think that as long as San Antonio as the core of Sophia Young, Agnieszka Bibrzycka, Shannon Johnson at the one or even the two, Katie Feenstra, Kendra Wecker with La Toya Thomas and Shana Zolman cming off the bench, that team has a bright, bright, bright future with or without Marie Ferdinand.

The best case scenario is that Sacramento keeps Ticha and picks up Ferdinand by letting somebody else go.

MAKE IT HAPPEN WHIZ, MAKE IT HAPPEN :D

Not saying Ferdinand isn't a need for the Monarchs. But we're not the only team that would find her addition beneficial. Zolman's a nice backup, but their primary 2g in San Antonio should be Ferdinand.

Doubt Ticha was being shopped last year since Haynie wasn't playing well consistently, Lawson was sick, and Dorrell is not a pg. And we'd just won a championship with Ticha at the helm. Ferdinand was pregnant so I don't know who there would have wanted to trade for.

Well Lets face facts...

No matter what I think Marie is cored. So it would take a trade to get her. I said Ticha because the money would be comparable and well Marie would be my lil fantasy. Marie does rank High on the ***Chew*** Scale

Let me quantify my thoughts about a Sign and Trade with Ticha. I would prefer to do that with an eastern Team for the before stated reason. Why make SASS better and then have to face them. I have been High on SASS for a while. While Marie would definately make us better, Ticha could make SASS significantly Better.

However for Marie, I just might risk it.

So as far as Ticha goes for me, it is a double edged sword. I maintain my position that I truly do not think she helps us if she stays or hurts hurts us if she leaves.
The problem is She could help somebody else.
And there in lies the real problem. Could we really afford to allow her to leave without getting Something in return for her. I am undecided whether it is worth keeping her another year. Cause no matter what I think 1 or 2 years is it for her one way or another.

Again why I keep pushing the DeForge move. She helps us whether Ticha stays or leaves. Is she better than Marie? Not really but I think more obtainable, cheaper, and perhaps a better overall solution.

But if Indy cores her, we are screwed.

DONE COVETING ANNA FOR THE WEEK.

Any other Ideas... other Trade options?
