After lots of headaches on how to set this up, I decided on the easiest for me...straight brackets.

I agree, except for "Automatic For The People".... though it was commercially successful, this album sucked all of the coolness out of R.E.M.

Agreed with both of the above, though I still find Automatic For The People to be a largely listenable R.E.M. album. The last one, though.

This was close for me as well, but ultimately won over by Nevermind.

Why the hate on Automatic for the peopler? o_O I love that album and was on my top ten list.

As an R.E.M. fan pre-Automatic, it just ruined the whole thing... I couldn't listen to R.E.M. for years after that album.... so sappy, so preachy, so overplayed.

That's funny, because I'm completely the opposite. I find early R.E.M. - certainly anything pre-Document - basically unlistenable, and even for Document, Green, and Out of Time only the radio stuff has any appeal to me. Then came Automatic, which is just completely solid front to back. I'm not a huge fan of "Everybody Hurts" but there are at least 9 songs on there I like, which is 3x as many as any other R.E.M. album.

So we are like opposites on R.E.M.... you are yin, I am yang; you are white, I am black; you are wrong, I am right...

Very interesting...
