If all that is true, then about the only small good to take out of that is that they plan on paying off the city loan in cash. That means the Maloofs will dispose of Arco on their own terms and the city won't have that albatross hanging over them like a black cloud. I assume the Maloofs have no intention of running a building without an NBA tennant. So it looks like they better save the Power Band signage change money for giant FOR SALE signs.

Without Arco as competition, there is a small chance that they can push through a new arena without the Maloofs and the NBA as part of the railyards development. The city still needs a facility and some development in the railyards. They are about to lose a chunk of tax dollars once the Kings move. They need to replace that and build for more in the future. The NBA is done in Sacramento for good now, but there are still concerts and shows that sell big. And there is always the possibility with a first class facility of hosting more college games and tournaments. The NCAA walked away from Arco because it was a subpar facility. They can attract them back with a great new building.

This was added:

The Ducks officials have reportedly offered a $100 million loan that could make it feasible to make the move now, with approximately $70 million being used to pay the city of Sacramento back for the Arco Arena loan and the remaining $30 million expected to be used for relocation fees. A Kings official, however, said on Monday that the report was "not accurate."

If it really does go down like this, with the Maloofs not even entertaining the Taylor-ICON group it is a huge kick in the nuts and I am done with this team. I do largely feel that Sacramento has forced this on itself but this ICON deal feels like it could finally be the one. Granted there are still major hurdles to get past, but finally everyone seems to be on board and it is part of the railyards project which the city is committed to and there are even federal funds coming in for the cleanup of the area. If the Maloofs really feel like they need to get out of town if this doesn't work why can't they work on getting an extension of the March 1st deadline rather than cut out the Taylor-ICON group entirely?

I was just about to post that. There was an LA Times report which said the Anahiem loan IS NOT on the table.

The amount of sour grapes about this is ridiculous. Do people just expect the Maloofs to sit there while they see money disappearing by the boatload? The city has had 10 YEARS to fix this situation. The city has shown absolutely no loyalty to the Kings whatsoever. The Maloofs have been incredibly generous and patient with the city. They could have moved somewhere else a long time ago and made way more money than they ever did in Sacramento. The ICON group has even admitted that any arena deal right now is a long shot. What it really comes down to I think is that with the NBA facing a lockout and no new arena on the table, the Maloofs are trying to hold on to control of the team period. If it turns out that an arena is not feasible, the Maloofs would be sitting on an aging arena making no money with no replacement possible. I get the impression that they are in serious financial trouble. I don't think they would be moving to screw the city or the fans. They would be moving to survive. Frankly, the Maloofs have given more to Sacramento than it deserves.

Recent revalations aside, your view is pretty much my point of view. What is the big hurry to accept a huge loan as enticement to move? Are they worried the NO Hornets will beat them to the market? I don't see the NBA moving that quickly on that. In fact I was of the opinion this was a pretty good investment for Stern because he will sell that team for way more than he paid. So why not just wait out the summer and give the ICON-Taylor and city a chance to perform under the gun? Nobody would blame them for jumping if that falls through. But this adds to the feeling of market jumping. Given the Maloofs finances and attention seeking nature, I think they are ready to run on this quick.

If Samueli wants the NBA in his building that bad, the offer will get much better than a loan.

Which makes me wonder what exactly is on the table.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Obviously the Maloofs are looking pretty seriously at their options, and from a business perspective, I don't blame them. If I were in their shoes, I'd do the same.

But the don't have much time to work everything out. While Anahiem is a good option, I don't think it's the best, not with 2 other NBA teams in So Cal, as well as the Angels, Chargers, and Ducks. The potential fanbase down there, which I don't think would be as great as a Louisville for example, and all the financial numbers they have to work out, really makes it both complicated and extremely risky if rushed. I'm praying, they don't have enough time to work all this out by the 1st.

Screw that. If we can't build an arena to keep the Kings I will fight against any arena proposal after the fact.. The peopel even thinking about this are retarded beyond belief.

the funniest part of this whole thing is that Honda center was built in 1993 for 123mil...how long until that building is in PBP's shape???? are they going to move to staples center also?? that's the thing that amazes me the most.

if they HAVE to move I would rather it be Louisville. arena is new and Cousins would retire in our "franchise", and it isnt LA.

I don't know a great deal about the USA markets but how big a market is Louisville?! I ask because one of Maloofs line of reasoning might be ability attract top free agents. They have a young up and coming team with a lot of salary cap room that they apparently intend on spending so my question is, where would a high profile FA likely sign Anaheim or Louisville?!

There are a lot of things that they would need to take into account if they really want to move the team. I just hope that something gets worked out and Kings stay in Sacramento! While I would still follow them even if they went to mars, it just would not feel "comfortable" if they are anywhere except Sacramento.

One thing no one has been mentioning is territorial rights. Couldn't The Lakers and Clippers veto a move to Anaheim? I don't know much about how that works, maybe someone whose knowledgeable about it could shed some light on it.

Once you factor in how many Orange County folks are Laker fans, I wonder if it's even a larger market? Even in Sacramento there's a large subsection of Laker fans. I'd imagine that problem would magnified by ten, at least, in Orange County.

I live in South OC. The Kings leaving is tearing my heart out. Everytime I visit my family is Sac, we all make it a point to go see Kings games. It will truly suck to not have them there...
That being said, I have about 5 good friends that live in OC (all from Sac) and we have already discussed season tix once they move down here. But besides us, I really don't see how they plan on winning over a large amount of fans..

Yeah, that's what I don't get. The deal sucks (though we're told that isn't the deal). How much sweeter is it? They'll always be the second tenant in someone else's arena. I've seen a Ducks game there, it was a decent place to see a hockey game but of all the arenas I've been to (admittedly, not many - Arco, Staples, Boston and Rose Garden) it was only marginally better than Arco.

Also, if the Maloofs somehow think that being in the LA/OC market is going to sway free agents they should look at how the Carmelo deal went down. It's not just about being in the market, its about being the high profile team in the market. That will ALWAYS be the Lakers... or at least until the Kings or whatever they'd be called make a run at 17 NBA championships.

Great point...I doubt it VERY seriously that the 90% of LA area residents that are Laker fans would even consider supporting a THIRD team in LA. If the Clippers are the red-headed stepchild in LA, what would that make the Kings, the inbred nomads??

Yep. Look at all the free agents lining up to be clippers.

Especially with all the "Queens" hate down there.. So If they did move down there they would have to re-brand their whole image from the ground up to take anything Kings out of it.

I have a feeling they're still going to file for relocation though.. Because;
1. Lack of any money spent on FA
2. Trades that were meant to shed salary after this season (which means they go into next year basically a new team with not a lot of money spent)
3. The Maloofs not being public at all about NOT filing like they had been in years past.
4. About the press release the Maloofs gave about the IKON proposal. Seemed like a "whatever, our minds are already made up" statement.

Someone please list reasons that they would stay or any inclings to that please?! :(

Same here, but I am not from Sac. My wife is, otherwise, same boat as you. I don't know anyone here who would be interested in the Kings. As I said before and elsewhere, to the extent that there are NBA fans here, they are Laker fans. I don't know of any Clipper fans. Probably have to go out to the 909 to find them. ;)
