Monia waived

Blazers Blog - The Kings requested waivers on small forward Sergei Monia.

The 23-year-old came to Sacramento from Portland in a Feb. 23 trade and played in only three games. His departure will clear about $1 million off the Kings' books.

Monia was waived due to his desire to return to Europe and resume his career overseas.

This is only speculation but i find it odd they will waive him i know his desire was to return to overseas but they still hold his rights maybe we're getting a trade done and we needed a roster space?

Well, this was obvious some time ago, just not actually done. But, who knows... hopefully it's to sign a big like Wright/Cato/Olowokandi. :)

You are aware that Monia couldn't sign with any other team anywhere in the world as long as he was under contract with the Kings. He wanted to return to Europe and sign a big contract with a european club. The only way he could do that was if the Kings waived him.

Waiving Monia doesn't suggest in any shape or form that the trade is coming.

I have it but I didn't post it originally. I am not sure who it was but it was definetly someone else from this board.

I don't see how this might relate to any trade - the title is in a bit of disconnect with the post text so I changed it.

Who is that guy that school Melo? Where was that game? It was a good move, but a one handed slam with an explamation mark is the way to do it...In your face!!!!

Now back to the thread topic, Monia is long gone and hopefully we can use his $1M and some other scraps around $1M to get some big. Kind of sad that's all we have, so hopefully we can trade KT, Corliss, Hart, Potatoe for someone decent like Mag from Milwaukee.

To clarify, do we have $1M from Monia, $800K, and $1.2M or so to spend, and we cannot combine the $800K & $1.2M? Can be combine the $1M from Monia and the $1.2M? Who do you guys think we could sign for that $, doesn't seem like a lot of $ in NBA terms besides a guy on the way out of the league, or a fresh young green rookie - 2 year guy. To summarize a guy that is really old or really young, both of which wouldn't mind coming off of the bench for limited minutes for a small deal.

Monia's salary doesn't allow for the Kings to spend any more money. It gives them a larger buffer against the luxury tax threshold. The exceptions you listed are the only amounts (outside of minimum salary contracts) that can be spent on free agents. Exceptions cannot be combined with any "other money" to sign free agents, to the best of my knowledge.

Waiving Monia most likely only means the Kings saw no value in making a guy who is NOT going to paly for them unhappy so they do him a favor and waive him. This would have virtually NO bearing on a trade UNLESS the Kings were looking to take on more sallery than they give up. MORE likely if it has any impact on an aquasition it would be a little cash to kick in to sign a low budget FA.

I know the FA market was weak this year, but we basicly have no $ to get Wright or some of the other FA 4/5s out there. I guess we will trade for what we need. Maybe this $ buffer will be used later on when the trade window opens up during the season or now still in the offseason and also to buffer against taking on a slightly higher salary then we are giving up in a trade. This isn't much $ and can go in a heart beat.

I disagree... Cato/Olowokandi I think can be had for the LLE. And Wright could be had for the LLE, since Minnesota were/are going after him. He's looking for a 3-year deal.

Obviously we'd be aiming for them.

The Kings, meanwhile, might be on the lookout for a big man on the relative cheap. They have $800,000 remaining from their mid-level exception and a separate exception worth $1.75 million.

If all of them get snatched up then were looking at guys like Voshkul/Aaron Williams. Or were not ;).
