SAN ANTONIO - The NBA is messing with the Cat in the Hat.

Kings guard Cuttino Mobley drew the attention of NBA officials last week when he wore a knit cap during a television interview.

Unbeknownst to him, Mobley was violating a memo sent by the league before the season that forbids wearing headgear during interviews.

Mobley, known as "Cat" because he liked Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat" as a child, has been notified he was violating the league's edict and wasn't pleased.

Mobley has continued to wear the skullies during interviews, an action that could bring further communication from the league.

"I'm sure there is something else in life besides me wearing a logoed NBA gear," Mobley said Monday. "That's my whole thing.

"I'm a man of suits and ties, and you're worried about me wearing an NBA-logo hat? I don't have a fitted Phillies cap on. It's an NBA-logo skullie."

NBA vice president Stu Jackson said the genesis of the directive is the league's desire that players be seen in their best light.

"As we evaluated how we as a league presented ourselves to the media, absolutely one of the things that sets us apart is that fans can see the faces and expressions of our players," Jackson said Tuesday. "As a result this season, we decided the best way to do so would be to send out that memo."

Mobley, 29, said he believes he consistently presents himself in a positive manner.

"I changed my gear just for that purpose," he said when preparing for an interview that would be seen on a national cable telecast. "It was a bad hair day for me, so what do you want me to do?

"It's just sometimes things are a little overboard to me. I'm not a problem child by no means. But don't get nit-picky. That's too much.

"Concentrate on cats that don't walk around in a business fashion. I walk around in a business fashion. Everywhere you see me, I'm a gentleman, so do that to somebody else."

That the Kings and the NBA sell the type of knit cap Mobley was wearing seemed a bit hypocritical to him.

"I can see his point," Jackson said. "But whether it is an NBA-logo hat or any other hat, we would like for players to not wear them during interviews."

Clearly, Jackson did not want this situation to escalate. Mobley was not fined, merely notified of the league's desires. And Jackson suggested the league would prefer not to be overly punitive.

"This is not something we're being heavy-handed about," Jackson said. "It's just something where we just want to work with the teams and help assist them with the policy.

"If a player was to repeatedly be in violation, then he could potentially be fined. But we just want to try and work with the teams to get the desired results."

Mobley said he has not been directly contacted by the league.

"(The NBA) has my number," he said. "If they want to reach me, they can reach me. I just think that was nit-picky, personally. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. But that's how I took it."

Mobley said he went out of his way to represent the Kings after he and Michael Bradley were acquired from the Orlando Magic on Jan. 10 for Doug Christie. The trade separated Mobley from his best friend, Steve Francis. "Especially after I had on one outfit and deliberately put on a Sacramento Kings outfit, seeing as I'm a new member of the team," Mobley said. "I put my skullie on, a T-shirt, sweat suit, everything and represented the NBA. What more do you want?"

Mobley has to be one of the most well mannered, well dressed, well represented athletes in sports. I did not know this "Cat" very much before he came to Sacramento. But I am very impressed. But I feel he is beiing picked on. I see players in head gear all the time. Why is this an issue now? Because he wears "a skullie"? Makes no sense. Somebody needs to tell Brad Miller to take that nasty "tobaccy" out of his mouth. You talk about a negative image. But this is not about Brad.

"Cat, keep yo hat on brotha"!!!

Well, as long as he isn't wearing one of those with the eye holes, looking like he is going to stick up Webber at the ATM, I fail to see how a hat, even a knit cap, is going get in the way of their directive. How many times did we see Doug in one?

You have a point there with Brad and the chewing tobbacco vs. Cat and the skullcap. I dig both guys and they can do what they want; I don't want the NBA to crack down on Brad either, but that does seem hypocritical of the NBA. Which is worse, tobbaco or skullcaps?

:D :D

thats total BS

he's totally right...here he is wearing a suit and a tie...something that everyone wants the younger players to start doing...and he's wearing a frickin NBA LOGO'd skull cap and people are going off...?? wtf? You can totally tell when league officials are bored out of their minds...they must just be jealous cuz he's one of the few men that can actually pull of wearing a skull cap with a suit...it looks good on ya Cat! Keep on keepin on

but the whole Brad tobacco thing...that just makes me sick to my stomach...totally uncalled for...i remember the first time i saw an interview with him and i was like "what the f... is in his mouth? Is that tobacco?" thats so totally disgusting...ugh

sometimes i wish i was a league official...o would there be some changes...i hate how they market the league and basketball as this young hip game and then they ban the things that are making it young and hip...and this isn't just with the hat thing...their has been other stupid things as well

let cat wear the hat and let brad do the dip. as long as it doesnt affect the game, let them do their thing. i dont care if cat wears a dress in an interview, its after the game, they should be able to dress/relax in any legal way they chose

I don't get to see every post-game interview, etc. But I always try to catch nightly on the local news about the Kings. I notice that since this season started, Brad hasn't been chewing his tobacco when being interviewed. Not sure why...maybe he quit or someone told him to stop doing it on TV?

<<Btw, in my avatar...is that the skullcap they're talking about?

Ok..... considering the complaint and such a quick reaction from the NBA, I was expecting to hear that Cat was wearing some Nazi symbols or something of that sort....... Give me a break!!!

The no hat rule is a good rule. Remember AI wearing that stupid hat awhile back. Cat should just take it off and stop whining.

I don't care about the hat, honestly, as long as it doesn't have something offensive on it.

I just can't believe that given the circumstances -- 2 NBA heavyweights going at it for the second time in a week, C-Webb being hurt, etc. -- the Bee couldn't find something more important, basketball-wise, to write about. The hat story could have been the lead to their notebook, IMHO.

I think thats what he is talking about Twix. I've been looking for a good one...now I where to get em! Anyone have Cat's phone number handy? I need to ask him a fashion question.

I would like to know one solid, reasonable reason why this is a good rule. I can't think of not one reason, particularly in the "good 'ole USA". If they ban the hats what is next:

1. Tattoos
2. Bling Bling
3. Jerseys
4. Doo-Rags
(Not that I agree or disagree with all of this stuff, that is not the point.)

What you are heading towards is a bunch of corporate button down suit wearing robots. That would be punk. Plus, that is not who alot of these guys are. If the individul team has that rule, that is one thing. I would rather see AI be who he is, than to force him to wear a suit, it would not be authentic. Besides Cutino wears a suit.

I always wondered whether that was true or not - kinda disgusting. Come on Brad - less tobacco and more rebounds!!!

word, purple reign word!

i like to see who these guys are and one to determine that is by the way they dress (believe or not)...and everyone is forced to button down...then who is who

for the record i LOVE how AI stands up and says in his words "I ain't wearing a suit"...AI isn't wearing a suit unless he's in court or at a funeral...hehehe

i know this is all a little of topic but i love how Kenny and Charles think there should be some unspoken rule that if you are over a certain age you shouldn't be wearing the throwbacks...there is nothing i hate to see more than some old guy wearing a throwback it just doesn't look right...ie: Sam Cassell...hang it up Sam hang it up

"NBA vice president Stu Jackson said the genesis of the directive is the league's desire that players be seen in their best light. "

So let me get this straight...the NBA's concerned about Mobley wearing a "skull cap" in interviews, and how it could affect how the players are portrayed, but they let Stephen Jackson come back..

Umm..

I'm sure this is aimed at the over-hiphopization of the league that has alienated such a large chunk of the fanbase, but...Cat Mobley? Mr. Slick? Come on now. Go talk to A.I. about looking dope, or rather LIKE a dope with his 10 sizes too big cap spun off at a 45 degree angle.

BTW, noted the "bad hair day" statement by a guy who wears it short and tight -- Cat says he wants to be a model, but I'm thinking he'd either better start stocking up on the rogaine or shave it completely off. :)

I don't know, I know I am far, far, far from 21 and these are the throwbacks I own (well my boys own a majority of them but I can wear them too ;):

LeBron Green Irish High School Jersey - 2001
LeBron White Cavs Jersey - 1972
Chris Webber Cream Colored Kings Jersey (my favorite) - 1972
Allen Iverson Syracuse National Jersey - 1946
Carmelo Nuggets Jersey White - 1972

I don't see it as whining, for crying out loud.

He made a response to what has to be one of the most nit-picking regulations to ever come from the NBA office.

There are a lot of things the NBA needs to address. I certainly don't think a player wearing an NBA Kings skullcap is one of them.

Repeat. The rule was made because of the hats being worn by AI and others during interviews that were totally rediculous. No hats, means no hats. Otherwise AI gets to wear his assinine hat too.

Oops,I just remembered, it was Reggie Miller wearing the stupid fishing hat over his eyes during an interview on TV a couple of years ago.

Repeat? Why? I read your first comment. There are appropriate and inappropriate pieces of apparel. I think the league could differentiate.
