I’m not backing up Fox, I want him traded. I’ve never believed in him as a title contending franchise man. Too inconsistent, too passive.
I've been a Fox supporter since day one. A hardcore one. But I have to admit that my support has been wavering in recent weeks.
Perhaps it's the Rich Paul effect. IDK. But all this talk recently of De'Aaron putting pressure on the org to show him where they're going in order to get him to re-sign just irritated the **** out of me.
Look dude. You're the franchise player already being paid like a franchise player. And they've given you a lot of help. If you are as good as you think and as good as some of us believe --- this team shouldn't be losing like it is. Last night's game was a microcosm of what's been going on the past two seasons, really, but even more so this season. And it isn't like De'Aaron hasn't played a big part in it.
Now, having said that, do I believe that Mike Brown is part of the problem too? YES. I think this team's offensive strategy is majorly flawed. They continue to play the same way despite not proving that their strategy is consistently effective. Even when they play well for much of the game, they typically still find ways to play poorly enough for a long enough stretch to blow big leads. To me, that's mostly on the HC. Last night (not having the team foul when the clock was under 10 seconds) was also on the coach IMO (as well as De'Aaron for his defense).
And more than that, Coach Brown was hailed as defensive coach. And this team's defense has rarely lived up to the hype. It's arguably been their biggest weakness since he's been the coach. He's not found a way to fix it. Roster makeup is surely part of the problem, but as far as I can tell Brown has say in the types of players he wants to coach. So it isn't all just on Monte McNair either.
I absolutely HATE that we're back on the coaching instability train so soon again. One of the reasons I have been against the firing of Coach Brown when the topic has been brought up over the past couple seasons is this franchises history of running through coaches. You can't keep hiring and firing coaches so frequently and not have it be a huge negative. At some point you need to settle on a guy you believe to be capable and stick with him for a much longer haul.
But as long as the players on the current roster continue to be prioritized over the HC, specifically a franchise that isn't winning, this is what you're going to continue to get. It's exactly what we have been getting for the past 18 years.
If you had one player carrying the team to a winning record, but was clearly being held back by poor coaching -- I could see choosing to side with the players. But when the team is missing postseasons and underachieving to the degree this team is, and no player looks like the second coming of Michael Jordan, I just can't side with the players. Go get some new ones. Because changing out the coach every 1-3 seasons stigmatizes the franchise and furthers instability.
Circling back to Swipa, if he's worth the contract he's going to demand --- the pressure should be squarely on HIM, not the franchise. But it seems these players and their agents believe they can have it both ways. They believe they are worthy of the bank breaking contract but don't believe they should carry the pressure of proving their worth.
Sure, every player needs some level of help around them. It's a "team" game after all. But it's not as if De'Aaron is playing with a bunch of g-leaguers. We all know this.
IMO, this team has a very small window now to prove that they were being mismanaged by the head coach. If they manage to turn things around with Doug Christie or whomever is named the interim coach -- GREAT! But assuming that nothing changes by season's end -- I think I would start changing out the parts that aren't fitting together. And that includes Domas and Fox.
At some point the players need to be held accountable too.
