Bobcats refusing three-team Stoudemire deal

By Mark J. Miller

The Miami Heat apparently was getting close to a deal for the Phoenix Suns' Amar'e Stoudemire(notes) but wanted the help of the Charlotte Bobcats to make it happen, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. Charlotte apparently wasn't interested in taking part the deal that would have supposedly landed them Udonis Haslem(notes). Wojnarowski writes that the deal could have had the Heat's Jermaine O'Neal(notes) moving to Phoenix and have Stoudemire and Jason Richardson(notes) moving east.
Richardson is set to make $14.4 million next year and the Suns would like to unload him.

Why not get the Kings involved in this where Bobcats backed-out? The only question I have is what would it take to get Haslem (expiring) and is he worth it?

Here are some scenarios:
Scenario 1: Trading K9 for Haslem (not sure it makes sense at all for the Kings)

Kings: K9 (expiring) to Phoenix
Miami: Haslem (expiring) to Kings, Jermaine O'Neal (expiring) to Phoenix
Phoenix: Amar'e (expiring) and J Rich to Miami

Scenario 2: Trading Nocioni for Haslem (exchange Noc's contract for an expiring... clears SF logjam a bit, rents a big... I like this deal, not sure Phoenix does, though)

Kings: Nocioni to Phoenix
Miami: Haslem (expiring) to Kings, Jermaine O'Neal (expiring) to Phoenix
Phoenix: Amar'e (expiring) and J Rich to Miami

Would do scenario 2 in a second

The Nocioni scenario makes sense for us, if Haslem is willing to sit on the bench for the rest of the season and waive a towel.

The trade doesn't make much sense for PHX...they can probably get a better offer for Amare and JRrich than Nocioni + Jermaine.

I'm not sure how legit this rumor is. I read in a Phoenix newspaper that there was no way that they were interested in bringing Jermaine to the Suns. I know their interested in getting rid of J. Rich, so maybe they changed their mind.

There's really not enough info here. Jermaine and Haslem make $31.1M, Amare and JRich make $29.7M, so this is easily within the CBA's 125% requirement.

Since the rumor is that the Bobcats were a third team involved, that must mean that more would have been going to the Suns - maybe Beasley, as rumored? Adding Beasley would make Phoenix's incoming value $35.7M, but they could take in $37M under the 125% rule, so it's still OK.

All right, let's add in Dorell Wright. That makes about $38.6M going to Phoenix - finally too much.

The Bobcats could send out Diop's long contract to Phoenix for Haslem's expiring, which saves basically $1.1M for Phoenix...but that's still not enough to get the trade legal.

Things are getting more and more complicated, and still this alleged three-team deal doesn't make sense.

OK, instead of Wright, let's add Daequan Cook...OK, Daequan Cook AND Mario Chalmers. Finally we've got a trade that would require a third team that includes the guys that have been mainly discussed:

Phoenix out: Amare, Jrich
Miami out: Jermaine, Beasley, Haslem, Cook, Chalmers

But you know what? In that case, Haslem doesn't have to be included at all - Jermaine, Beasley, Cook and Chalmers would match almost perfectly.

Anybody have any clues? I can't see any reason to actually involve a third team in the first place.

I am unsure... maybe Phoenix wants an additional piece?

On top of (the hypothesized) Beasley and Cook and Chalmers (accidentally had Wright in there before the edit)? All I know is that it's getting pretty complicated just to speculate at this point!

The key issue here as far as the Kings are concerned, however, didn't even occur to me. If the Heat/Suns are asking Charlotte to take on Haslem's $7.1M, it's to put less, not more money into the deal. Which means Noc/KT wouldn't be of any use in any deal like this anyhow, since they make more than Haslem.

It seems like the 'gm's on this board just want Petrie to make a trade just to make a trade.
