Meanwhile, on the Cousins front...

He will get the max from someone. And if he is maxed out he will remain tradeable to someone. He's that special a talent.

If we treat him with hostility we have to know this animal enough to know we'll get it back tenfold. This is the one you bribe and cozy up with, not the one you chastise and threaten. And we're not just dealing with Cousins anymore, we're dealing with a major agent vs. our rookie front office. If we **** with him, he will get in Boogie's ear and start questioning just about everything.
Sounds like the plot of Othello.

Being a life-long, diehard UK fan and living just south of Rupp Arena, you hear from wayer boys, managers, classmates, players, etc...

With that said, Calipari was so successful with Cuz for three reasons: trust, expectations and John Wall.

Cal did a good job of saying "Cuz, this is your team. We win and lose because of you. We go as far as you take us, etc..." He meant it too.

John Wall meanwhile was the true leader of the team. He was not afraid to pull Cuz aside and tell him to cool his crap, calm down, run to your spot, play D, etc... Cuz has not had that since he left Lexington.

This should be committed to memory by every Kings fan. Trust, expectations and a teammate who, while the leader of the team, managed to be Tonto to Cuz's Lone Ranger at the same time.

At the risk provoking some folks I think this is where bringing in Shaq as a mentor to DMC can be the MOST valuable. While he can in no way act a substitute for an on court presence calming DMC, Shaq does understand the importance of staying focused and keeping your head in the game especially when getting hacked.

Uh, no. If you max him out now and he remains a petulant child, there is no team in the NBA who would want to touch that toxic concoction of a max contract and locker room cancer.

His agent is not a moron. He will be trying to maximize Cousins' contract. And doing that is not by taking a one year qualifying offer next year. Restricted free agency gives the front office leverage in this situation. Don't alienate the kid, but there is a massive gulf in between shunning him and giving him everything he wants.

you have to max him out now or might aswell trade him and rebuild...we have no leverage what so ever, we basically handed him the team when we didnt match tyreke...now our only hope to win the nba championship is if he becomes the most dominant big man in the game...or as i said start to rebuild...i mean just look at what golden state is doing and houston if they get dwight...how can we compete??? we have to go all in with cus or go all in rebuild

But but ... Isaiah Thomas ... Greivis Vasquez! Pass first? Make ... team mates better!? I will seriously LOL and perhaps stop following the Kings after 13 years as an international fan with no roots to SAC whatsoever if they don't retain Cousins next season. I'm sick and tired of this team losing, and they just traded away my favourite player in years so.. Not exactly thrilled with the organization at the moment. Still will be patient and wait to see what comes out of it.

Max him now! What is this silliness of not inflating his ego, letting him feel all mighty and powerful? Of course he is! Let the players have their massive egos, it doesn't always lead to problems. In fact let's face it- it's not going to change much about his attitude anyways. Did LA give a crap when Kobe acted childish? No! They won championships and I want to vomit saying that!

Cuz is OUR petulant child, and he's going to win us a CRAP TON OF GAMES.

After reading that, I'm starting to think maybe we're approaching the Cousins Attitude Conundrum the wrong way.

Cuz is OUR petulant child, and he's going to win us a CRAP TON OF GAMES.

He may win them a ton of games if he quits acting like a child and harnesses his anger into playing some defense and actually being a leader. If he keeps acting the way he did last year though he's not going to win them many games.

This is what makes this decision tough. If you sign him to a max contract extension it may be just what the doctor ordered to send the proper message that we believe in you and want you to lead this team for many years to come. That may be what it takes to get him to grow up and quit acting like a child.

The problem is you give him the max deal and he still acts like a child and doesn't lead......well that is a disaster and sets the team back even further for the next half decade.

Ultimately the right choice is to gamble and give him the extension and not just hope (but pray!) that it works. The downside of such a gamble is massive but the potential payoff is too good to not take a chance on.

Whoah. Just...Whoah.
Bigs are ALWAYS overpaid. Always. Especially talented ones. Gone are the days of seven year contacts; they are easily moved when attached to a man as talented as Cousins.

Wow! I cannot believe just how much in denial some fans are. Readong some of this comments confirm to me that some of the fans don't even deserve the team! If you don't think Cousins is worth a Max deal, they you really should consider following a conservative sport like the lawn balls!

Have people not learnt anything from the Tyreke episode that we are just going thought?! **** me!

Sometimes reading posts like the above you'd really think that this team was a playoff team being led by two all-stars in Cousins and Evans.

Giving Cousins a max contract may very well be the right move because of his potential and on the premise that it may motivate him but this notion that he somehow deserves a max contract is crazy.

DeMarcus Cousins has done absolutely nothing to deserve a max contract. He's under-performed, acted like a fool, and most importantly has not won many games....................and yet still giving him a max contract is probably what will happen and what should happen. Ahh the power of being young and incredibly talented..........

exactly...i dont know why so many fans are delusional...max him out now cus he will get the max no matter what...do u really want him to go out and see what his value will be in the open market???? imagine after this season and the lakers have all that cap, u really dont think they wont go hard after him and he signs a offer sheet with them or another team and demands us not to match... u think he has a problem now??lol just wait...no u lock him in now, feed his ego and build around him..and if u just look at the landscape of teams like GS and the Clippers and denver... he will be our only advantage against those teams...he has to work...

DESERVE? DESERVE????? its not about DESERVE in the nba..its about what the market will pay you...did tyreke deserve 44 mil??? and the market says a 20 and 10 center gets the max every single time... i mean javelle mcgee gets paid 10 million a year..does he DESERVE that???

Reading some comments about how we have to settle for players just because we're Sacramento makes me wonder if we even deserve a team. Some want to diminish us just for the sake of an argument. Didn't we just argue we're a great market for a NBA team? Have some pride!

The Sacramento Kings are the market. We should pay what a player is worth to us. McGee got 10 million...should we pay McGee 10 million. No.

I cant believe this is a even discussion. I thought this thread was going to be the original poster saying we should give Cuz the max asap. With every other poster just posting agreed underneath...

what precisely would then be your route to acquire talent? draft them for the next decade only so we can bleed them away once they want to get paid as they should be? because nobody is going to sign with a team that has no actual talent going for them and we don't either have any assets to make trades work. Demarcus Cousins, RIGHT NOW, would be paid max money. every player his size, putting up the numbers he does is getting paid max money and that's disregarding a) that he's done so under the most incompetent leadership the NBA has to offer on one of it's crappiest and most mismanaged teams and b) that he's still got enormous potential. you pay that man, unless you strive for another 4-5 years futility.

we do not think that. what we do think, however, is that laying blame for the crappiness of the last few years at the feet of the two players of this team that can actually play basketball is asinine. you know who I blame? I blame all the role players incapable of performing the job they should be doing and instead thinking this was their team. I blame the guy responsible for acquiring said players with utter disregard of what his best assets would need to maximise their talent. I blame the guy responsible for getting these guys in line who utterly, utterly failed at that job. I blame the owners too broke and indifferent to actually care about fixing all this and only interested in grabbing the maximum amount of cash.

do Tyreke and Cuz share part of the blame? yeah they do, but relative to the ****-ups mentioned above, their share of the blame is miniscule and in Reke's case consists mostly of him being a good soldier and putting up with all this.

Deservin' has got nothin' to do with it.

And its his talent which deserves the contract. More importantly, its his talent that WILL get the contract. The ONLY question is whether we get to be the one to give it to him or we lose our other top young talent to incompetence. There's a clear answer there.

Seems so simple, doesn't it? And yet, because some people have issues with how Cousins has acted in the past they want to cripple the future of the team by refusing to admit that after yesterday the team became Cousins' and your success or failure is pretty much all on his shoulders.

This is not Cousin's team. He has not earned that distinction. This team does not belong to anyone at the moment other than Vivek. If any player is the face of the franchise at the current moment it is probably IT. That will make the hair stand up on some poster's neck, but the truth of the matter is he has been the most consistent leader and has done the most to live-up to his potential in the recent past.

I have hope for DMC, but I am not putting all my eggs in the DMC basket.

IT? I pray that's a joke! The NBA is all about the potential a player has. Teams bank on it. Teams tank entire seasons for certain players/next years draft. You pay for potential. Cousins drips with potential. IT is a decent PG that I think is most suitable to coming off the bench. The face of a franchise because he made the best out of his situation? Hardly. Like it or not, Vivek and Co. have come out and made moves/trades that clearly indicate Cousins is the face of the franchise and have stated it numerous times. All we can do as fans is accept it or not accept it.

Good grief. There isn't another team in the league that would make a marginal talent like IT the "man" over guys like cuz or Reke. It isn't about maximizing talent, being nice or the novelty of small ball. You build around the best talent and fit complimentary pieces to them, not the other way around.

Well, you take IT as your franchise centerpiece, I'll take Cousins.

We have some serious problems if Isaiah Thomas is our franchise player lol

Lets see him play some D, show up every night, show leadership and not be a borderline cancer on/off floor. If he starts show that this year than at the earliest we should be having this convo is next summer

That's not the way it works.

You're short, fat and bald. You put a ring on your girl's finger now, because around the corner 6 good looking guys in their Ferrari's are just waiting, and if it comes down to an open competition you have destroyed your own future.

This is seriously a no brainer people. A no choicer. DeMarcus Cousins will be earning max money in 12 months. Bank on it. So its actually beyond stupid to not just put in your chips and pay it to him now. Even if you needed to trade him, you still could with relative ease.
