Meanwhile, on the Cousins front...

On the Cousins front....

Kings GM D'Alessandro, coach Malone & @Vivek close friend & ex-NBA player Junior Bridgeman visited DeMarcus Cousins in Mobile, Ala., on Wed.

While a contract extension solidifies it, Kings GM Pete D'Alessandro told Y! Sports he is confident in DeMarcus Cousins as face of franchise

Not sure how I feel about this but this is one way to placate him. Can't imagine Cousins being the type to sit around waiting for his extension.

why not just extend him to the max now??? hes gona be offered the max by some team, might aswell lock him up so we dont have this drama again

Oh, there is absolutely no choice now. Its all Cousins all the time for the Kings now. He's the unquestioned franchise guy now, and we are going to rise...or collapse into smoldering ruin on whether he takes the baton and runs with it. We certainly have less than no leverage now. We need him, he knows it, and so let's just get it done and hope that a show of trust, and of course money, will trigger responsibility.

Agreed. Whether he takes us to the promised land or gives us a one-way ticket to Wiggins, I'm excited to see what he can do as the face of the franchise.

Cousins has to earn being the franchise guy IMHO. Before that happens, there is no need to give him an extension. It is my opinion that the franchise should not start handing over the reigns or the money to a person who has demonstrated certain maturity issues. Large sums of money are accompanied my large shares of responsibility. This next season should serve as an extended interview for DMC.

There is every reason to give him an extension now, if you have the belief that he's going to straighten up and be the face of the franchise. You do it now BEFORE his value goes through the ceiling. If Vivek/PDA are building around him, you do not want a sword of Damacles hanging over his head.

We didn't have much leverage before. We certainly don't have any now.

You have to pay to try to inspire the responsibility, and yes for certain personalities that works. Put your faiuth in them, and they respond by trying to prove it worthwhile.

The alternative is continue to mistrust him, he will feed off that too as we've seen. Now he's got a power agent as well. Every extra month thid drags on the bigger your chances of losing him. First with him mentally checking out, then with him demanding a trade and trying to walk away. And because of his toxic personality he's not a player you could possibly try to force to stay in town against his will. He'd tear the whole building down around him.

So this is leap of faith time. You want him to be something. You need him to be something. So the only choice not inviting disaster is to suck it up, break open the wallet, and say "go be something". Otherwise we are lost and rudderless, and by the time the new rebuild sans Reke and Cousins finally produces a winner, the fanbase will long since have begun to see Vivek and friends as the new Maloofs. Gotta make this one work.

Cousins sure better get his **** together now. we just through away our 2nd best player and put the keys in his hands. if he doesnt step up and ends up having to be traded, this team in gonna be in the basement of the league for a few more years

These are all nice example of blatant immaturity. If he acted like this I would be very thankful that we did not hand over the keys to him and would gladly show him the door.

Trust needs to be earned and he has not earned it. If I were Vivek and PDA and even Malone I would be very honest with DMC right now. I would tell him "we would love for you to be the face of the franchise and provide you with a max contract accordingly. Before we do that however, this next season we need to see max effort every night and more importantly the ability to lead this team by example."

He should be agreeable.

Co-signed!

There is zero reason to get an extension done now. Cousins won't sign for anything less than the max, and next year he's restricted so we can offer him the max then anyways with no risk.

Lets see him shape up his attitude first. We can call him the face of the franchise all we want in public, he needs to demonstrate it on the court before we destroy all cap flexibility for him. If he doesn't work out, we need to be able to rebuild fast and a maxed out Cousins won't help.

You apparently don't know him at all.

Or me. I'd tell you to bite me, go sign with the Lakers on purpose to maximize the pain, and drop 40 and 20 on your *** every time we met for the next decade.

Not the way to go about this. We are anointing Cousins as The Man. You don't kick that off by saying "I don't trust you". Especially not to a guy with major trust issues. Cousins has all the power here. He's somebody's max player. We desperately need him to be ours, even more desperately now that we shipped out the only other candidate we had for the role. Otherwise all we've done is throw away the only two good parts of Geoff's forever rebuild to begin all over with a PDA rebuild and more years of misery.

He will get the max from someone. And if he is maxed out he will remain tradeable to someone. He's that special a talent.

If we treat him with hostility we have to know this animal enough to know we'll get it back tenfold. This is the one you bribe and cozy up with, not the one you chastise and threaten. And we're not just dealing with Cousins anymore, we're dealing with a major agent vs. our rookie front office. If we **** with him, he will get in Boogie's ear and start questioning just about everything.

what fresh hell is this? I'm barely over all these insane people happy about seeing Reke go and now we've got posters that think it would be prudent not to give Cuz the max? I don't even...what? the guy *will* absolutely get a max deal next summer and will always be tradeable. why would you want to risk a whole season of unhappy Cuz, when you're just delaying the inevitable and stand to lose the one real asset this team is left with?

This. You offer Cousins a max extension the very second that it is legally allowed as per the CBA. And, you make sure way ahead of time that he knows that the offer is coming.

indeed. i'm convinced that there's a not-insignificant portion of the sacramento kings fan base that really doesn't care if the team loses for a decade as long as it looks nice, shiny, and presentable while they do it. i am, of course, not among them...

Seems so simple, doesn't it? And yet, because some people have issues with how Cousins has acted in the past they want to cripple the future of the team by refusing to admit that after yesterday the team became Cousins' and your success or failure is pretty much all on his shoulders.

Maybe you don't know him well at all. A mad and spiteful DMC is not very effective. If he did go to the Lakers and played with anger it would be to our advantage. Pretty much every team in the league knows that the best way to play against DMC is to get under his skin so that he becomes his own worst enemy.

This is not a Kings versus DMC thing. It is not about hositilty. It is a "let's work together on this and make some things better before making a long-term committment."

Being a life-long, diehard UK fan and living just south of Rupp Arena, you hear from wayer boys, managers, classmates, players, etc...

With that said, Calipari was so successful with Cuz for three reasons: trust, expectations and John Wall.

Cal did a good job of saying "Cuz, this is your team. We win and lose because of you. We go as far as you take us, etc..." He meant it too.

John Wall meanwhile was the true leader of the team. He was not afraid to pull Cuz aside and tell him to cool his crap, calm down, run to your spot, play D, etc... Cuz has not had that since he left Lexington.

1) a motivated Cousins is one of the most destructive forces in the league -- to the other team. In the future it will get only worse. This IS the one that you are terrified of coming back on you. Kevin wasn't. I doubt Reke even will be -- wrong personality. But Cuz? Oh yeah. A chance to strike back at those who done him wrong is what he lives for.

2) and Cousins is too smart of a guy to fall for some platitudes. He will read it for exactly what it is : "you don't trust me". The only speculative is how long until that becomes a self fulfilling prophecy, and until he figures a way around his conscience, with a little help from his agent of course. After all, THESE aren't the same guys who drafted me. They can go f themselves.

There is no gain whatsoever to such a play. Cousins has heard I don't trust you from everyone his whole life. By far your best play, indeed only one, is to be the one group that says we do. Not earn my trust. Not let's sign a prenup. But I trust you, now let's get to it. That's your loyalty play. your only one. Cousins holds all the cards. The only way to win the game is to close it before he realizes that, or is reminded of it by those around him.

You give Cuz his max contract as soon as you can. There should be no doubt here. He's going to get his max contract somewhere, so we better make sure we sign him right now that we are the only one allow to do it. I don't understand people questioning this. Have you seen the contracts that average big men are getting? Splitter anyone?
If this FO, like they have said, believes Cuz is our franchise player, there's no need to wait. Just give him his contract and see what a confident and happy Cousins can give you. Even in the worst possible scenario, we will always be able o trade that contract.

This is why I'd pay Iguodala $13 million a year.
