Me for Coach!

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Figured I would make this thread truly Kings related by stumping for the Kings head coaching job. ME FOR COACH! I've fixed the Kings defensive/rebounding woes, and am confident I can make them a 60 win squad. On a computer admittedly, but hey, we all have to start somewhere. I'll even work cheap -- let's say for only 1/4 of the $10mil that slimewad Jackson wants.

Upon the completion of the season, I immediately went into Kings withdrawal and to alleviate this debilitating condition, I went back to an old friend (no, not the bottle! :p). But a BBall GM/Coaching (non arcade) sim called Jump Shot Basketball (and now switching over to the new name Courtside Challenge for next season). I had played an earlier version years before (have mentioned a game where I had made Fred Hoiberg my starting PG and he became an All-Defensive team member - that was it. Thankfully have improved their algorithms tremendously since then.) And so I went out and found them again and downloaded their free demo, which seems surprisingly complete for single season play, but probably has career mode turned off.

And so I, of course, took the Kings out for a spin. The latest patched version apparently was put together near the end of the season since the Kings roster was already in its late season form. And so I thought I'd see how I could do with a full season with our guys. While I'd love to make a trade or two, I've decided to stick to the true team as it would look if it started a season healthy. I did feel compelled to do some editing on our guy's ratings -- frankly they were giving us far too much credit on defense in certain cases, and in a few others did not seem to know people's games (Brad was a strong defender with a post game, Thomas couldn't shoot etc.). Adjustments were made, and now everybody more or less feels like themselves. The games in this sim can be coached farily quickly (maybe 20min with just subs/timeouts) and with minimal attention, so an amuising little timewaster, kind of like solitaire. ;)

Results thus far:

-- record is 21-8, works out to about 60 wins
-- having no great players and many ok/good ones, my rotations are deep
-- not having to worry about egos in a computer game, my hook is also pretty quick
-- I play big ALL of the time. No small ball wussiness. Tag is a C. Skinner is a PF. Corliss is a SF. Evans is an OG. If a guy swings between two positions, I play him almost exclusively at the positon where he has a size advantage. I also occasionally use Tag/Miller or Tag/Skinner frontlines, and have recently become a fan of swinging KT down to SF, and even Peja down to OG.
-- result of all of that size is that we actually win the rebounding battle! +3.2 per game.
-- with all of the defensive specialists I play, our offense is down to 99.7ppg, and our great passing game is no more with our personnel -- only 19.1 ast/gm.
-- but on the other hand, our defense is vastly improved to only 94.8ppg, albeit while still letting the other teams shoot 46.7%.
-- Bibby/Peja are my leading scorers, although both are very inconsistent
-- Brad is Brad
-- Cat is an irrelevant 12ppg scorer, and is often replaced for long stretches by Mo
-- Mo plays every game, albeit sometimes very limited minutes, as a defensive roleplayer. Mostly at the OG, but occasioanlly at the SF (even though I don;t like to go small -- just no adequate backups there)
-- Tag plays every game for 17-18min a game, and he and Skinner are having a defensive/rebounding impact
-- Darius has been losing minutes to Tag/Skinner, but is still normally the first PF off the bench. If he plays well in his first stint, he gets major minutes. If not, he may not return for the rest of the game + Tag/Skinner get the time.
-- House is out of the rotation and a garbagetime player, or was until Bobby just got hurt for 25gms (big surprise)
-- Corliss has been the 11th man and a pure spot/roleplayer. He NEVER plays PF, let alone C. He's a SF. His only role is to come in against a weak defensive SF and pummel him in the post for a few minutes -- normally becomes the goto guy as soon as he comes in with a favorable matchup.
-- Bobby was Bobby and giving us a big boost off the bench. But now Bobby was too much like Bobby, and is out for a third of the season again.
-- Martin was stashed on the IL (as during the playoffs) all season with our guys mostly healthy (numerous injuries, but all minor until Bobby). But now with BJax down, he's back ont he active roster.
-- I have beat San Antonio once and Miami twice, but Dallas completely owns us and has blown us out all three times we have faced them by 20+ points. Tried everything and everyone, and they just slap us around mercilessly. First time I've ever been scared of a Mavs team.

Is it this ability to play more than one position which gives certain players the title 'swingman'?

I often wondered, but wasnt sure.

I seem toremember Gerald Wallace being called a swingman. But i thought he only played PF. (I guess i must have that wrong)

Actually a "swingman" generally refers to only one specific type of combo player -- an OG/SF. No idea why that's true, but that's pretty much how its used. Gerald was mostly a SF.

This is about what I've been looking for, a Coaching sim, since most games out nowadays are player/GM oriented.

Have you heard of any other games in this genre?

Looks very interesting to me, Brick... Did you say you can download a free demo? Could you send me a link?

This could be the answer to MY withdrawals - or the beginning of another OCD episode.

:D

It has been my understanding that the reason the OG/SF combo player is known as a "swingman" (and not other combo players) is that it is the only one where the player "swings" from a Guard to a Forward position (or vice versa).

Silly 6th.

It's because a "swingman" knows all the words to In the Mood and Chattanooga Choo-Choo.
