Mayor Kevin Johnson's press conference

This could be good news. On the other hand, it could be a meeting that ends up getting cancelled or is a formal way to meet with ICON to say, "Look, we're moving. But here's the documents that we acquired the last 10 years in case you still want to build an arena. They might not help you much anymore though because the primary tenant will be absent."

Yeha, same conclusions I came to in the other thread where this was mentioned. At least its not BAD news.

or the maloofs want to hear what Taylor has come up with so far

"Taylor's group has not yet met with the Kings to discuss possibilities, but Johnson said the basketball team is expected to turn over 11 years worth of financial and arena-related documents to Taylor by the end of this week, and he is expecting the Kings and Taylor to be able to meet next week, regardless of what is happening between the Kings and Anaheim officials.

The NBA deadline for team's requesting permission to move is next Tuesday, March 1, although the league could consider extending that deadline, if requested."

You know, I'm beginning to sour on Amick. He's the only one who has been pushing this story lately - everything else in other sources has been based on his primary reporting - and he's been putting as negative of a cast as possible on the situation. "Maloofs MAY file for relocation", "Maloofs have yet to deliver documents - get worried". Well, the Bee - for years a notable anti-arena, anti-Maloof source - is now telling us that the documents haven't been handed over because the meeting hasn't happened yet. That's not panic material. Kreidler thinks they'll wait it out. Crandell thinks they'll wait it out. KJ says he's in contact with the Maloofs and a move would be news to him. Amick is beating his own drum here, and I don't much care for his rhythm. Maybe he's right, but it's definitely his last shot at redemption for me. After the whole "Petrie and Westphal are going to be fired" false alarm Amick is on thin ice.

In a nutshell, something stinks, and while Amick is pointing his finger at the Maloofs I'm beginning to wonder if the stench isn't coming from Amick.

I don't like this: SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Mayor Kevin Johnson appeared less than optimistic Tuesday morning as he addressed reporters questions about a possible relocation of the Sacramento Kings.

Less than 48 hours after Johnson referred to reports the Kings were considering a move to Anaheim as "rumors and speculation", he said at his weekly news conference that it is more than that.

"There are more than rumors going on in Anaheim," Johnson said. "They are in conversations with Anaheim I believe. And I know as a city we can only control what we can control."

No matter how you slice it, it's not good news that KJ hasn't spoken to the Maloofs in over 4 weeks, especially when we're pretty sure the Maloofs have spoken to Samueli within the last 2 weeks.

And it's also not good that the Maloofs haven't turned over the documents. I don't care what rationalization they use, it's probably 200 or less .pdf's, .doc's, .xls's and .ppt's over a handful of directories. It'd fit on a CD, for Pete's sake. There's a reason they can't turn it over?

I suspect that other bidders are still in the hunt, and the Maloofs will make their public announcement on March 1 -- even if Feb 28 turns out to be SRO.

Sorry, but it seems to me that KJ is not good at reading between the lines. He just seems sort of dense on this issue.

We also cannot discount the Maloofs position with the Palms. I believe it's $300M in cash plus $600M in loans, for a property now believed to be worth $150M. That's pretty harsh. The Maloofs are not driving the bus, and regardless of their sincere desire to stay here, they probably can't. I imagine part of the deal with Samueli is some level of backing on the Palms' loans.

I'd love to own a Porsche too, but I guarantee that'd cause me cash flow problems. Thus it is with the Maloofs and the Palms. They really, really blew it -- and now fans get to pay.

Sorry if this all sounds so harsh, and I hate to tell the widow at her late-husband's funeral, "Hey, you think YOU got problems!", but... Oh well.

Agreed with your assessment. My opinion as well.

Well said and I hope as we all do that it turns out to be the case. That would be a pretty seedy move to stir up something like this right now but it's not as if reporters don't do that sot of thing all the time.
