Marcos Breton: Survey tells only part of story on arena costs

"On Thursday, the Sacramento City Council will get the findings of a survey showing favorable support for an entertainment complex in the downtown railyard.

(Paul) Maslin will tell council members that respondents in his survey strongly supported all the funding methods (new taxes on hotel rooms, prospect of a sales tax on goods sold within a new arena, personal seat licenses for the arena, $2 fee on every ticket, contributing public land at or near the arena site, construction of digital advertising signs around the arena, cellphone towers, collecting fees from city-owned parking lots for the arena, billboards, etc.) mentioned here."

While I love all the ideas for generating revenue that they're coming up with, I worry about the mention of excluding other counties. This is a regional issue. My parents live in Granite Bay, which I believe is Placer County....and I know there's a ton of money there and they love their Kings. Why let it go untapped?

My best guess would be to get regional businesses (large, medium and small) to buy as many tickets as possible (which helps with rasing the money from the $2 ticket surcharge) and getting regional hotels to place a special tax that requires no public vote. Every penny counts and will add up.

Well kings fan,i think the arena will not get built and the magoofs do not want to be here.they stayed because david stern told them they had to stay one more year.the magoffs are snake oil salesman out for themselves.i love my kings and i hope we build arena but these are hard times.

You are entitled to your views, but I could not disagree more. There is no way this arena will not be built. Not with every thing that has transpired so far. Kevin Johnson would not waste his precious time, if he did not think this project could not be completed.

As far as the Maloofs, if the plan calls for them to contribute, they have no choice but to find the money or sell the team. Because if all other financing is in place, except the Kings part, Stern will step in one way or the other to make sure that the NBA is not standing in the way of progress.

The business support to me is the best regional support that the other counties can give. Buy up all the available tickets, ensuring sell outs for the first two or three years by placing a down payment up front (kind of like the 49ers are doing right now), in order to gain leverage for additional financing. The hotel tax I am kind of luke warm towards. Yes in Downtown Sac, not so much in other counties.

Nice try. You don't really want an arena built. Anyone who constantly uses the term Magoofs is more concerned with hurting the Maloofs than they are helping their community get a entertainment complex.

IMO, KJ HAS to get this done if he even wants to think about getting re-elected. There is more momentum, pressure, and excitement for a building then ever. If this doesn't come through, it will be a public embarrassment for Sacramento. We are on the national stage for this...

(I'm wondering if you're a 'Sac Bee comments section' type, trying to infiltrate this board...? Just a thought...)
