Maloofs Hope To Extend Petrie's Contract Soon

http://www.sacbee.com/sports/story/2399050.html

The Kings are looking to extend the contract of president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie.

Sacramento co-owner Gavin Maloof said back in September that Petrie would be a "King for life" despite the fact that his contract only runs through the 2009-10 season.

"We want to look at (negotiating an extension) within the next couple weeks," co-owner Joe Maloof said, mentioning a timetable for the first time.

"We'll sit down with Geoff and discuss the state of the franchise, talk to him about his feelings on the team, how he feels about the situation and go from there and try to work a nice agreement for both parties."

Petrie is among the highest-paid general managers, earning $4.6 million this season on a contract that was signed long before the economy caused the current financial downturn in the NBA.

Hopefully they can come to an agreement. Petrie has done a good job drafting last couple of years (still waiting on Hawes) and I feel with some pieces and time this team could be a title contender.

If we add pieces and give it time, that's the goal, to contend for a title. How is that getting ahead of ourselves?

Before we mention titles, we have to make the playoffs, before we mention making the playoffs we have to finish a season .500..

Don't we only have 1 road victory this year? Or am I mistaking?

I dont have any doubt that this team could be in the playoffs next season.

Also the young talent hasnt even hit its peak yet, once they get the gears grinding Im sure we will have a shot.

The keys to the sentence that you're jumping all over are "time" and "pieces". No one is saying that this team, as it's currently comprised, is primed to contend for a title. And every time someone mentions the Kings eventually being a title contender, there's no reason for someone to pipe up and say "not THIS team, we're 1-10 on the road!" The Droid is simply saying that the Kings are on the way back to being contenders. I'd like to think that he's right; I hope so.

Your progression is spot on. There's some improvement that needs to be made before the Kings can be considered title contenders. That doesn't mean that they're not on the right path, that they're not a couple of pieces and some time away from being right there.

I think the jury is still out on Petrie. I know some have given up on him and want him gone; some will stand by him no matter what. I think there are decisions he's made that have really hurt the franchise, but I'm also hopeful that he can turn it around and propel us back into the mix. I'm not holding my breath, but I'm hopeful. If he doesn't stick around, then I'll be sort of dismayed because I don't believe in change for the sake of change. But I'll have a hard time defending him, because he's been right in the middle of all these losing seasons, bad coaching hires, horrendous contracts, etc., that have held the Kings down for so long. I would hope that the Maloofs can bring someone else in who is going to make the tough decisions, not just defer to them. If he gets extended, I'll be looking for him to prove himself again. Six in one hand, a half dozen in the other.

And they should resign Petrie. He has done a good job. I have seen a lot of posts complaining about the way Petrie orchestrated the Webber/Bibby contract disposals, and the truth is this is the only way the Maloofs could afford to do it. They needed to rebuild thru the draft. They tried bringing in free agents but that is expensive and is only a bandaid after a while. So instead of accepting mediocre the Maloofs decided to blow it up. They dont have the money the Celtics had so they rebuilt through the draft. Petrie did a good job and look at the team he built! Sure there were a coupla dicey years there, but the future is looking good! Now if we could only draft a center....

There's some sketchy revisionist history here, but I agree that he's made some good moves in the draft(s). And I leave it at that. :o

Whatever San Antonio Spurs GM R.C. Buford makes, Geoff Petrie should get about half to two-thirds his salary. As good as Petrie has been, Buford rates clearly better, to a heck of a lot better. Of course, I really could care less what Maloof's do with their money, what money they have left to throw at Petrie to keep him around - forever - since forever is a long time:eek:

Not even. Bufrod has done absolutely jack ****. We had this discussion before. It was proven that Buford has done very little to get that squad where they are, that there are others in SA who are more deserving of the praise.

I suppose you mean Pop. Well if you scroll down to the very end tandem's work is described as best of best FO's over past decade - not a bunch of "absolute jack **** " - as you describe.

Buford deserves more because he was lucky enough to have the No. 1 pick twice in years where a no-brainer HOF C was available? Oh let me guess...he engineered Robinson's injury? Making less than Buford is fine, but saying Petrie deserves half ain't quite right. Some things are out of his control, while other things (like going to a team that will pay him market salary) are not. He's not the best, but he's no doubt top 10, probably top 5. Give the man his money.

Don't need to knock another GM in order to praise Petrie. However, Buford/Pop's real test will be what the do post-Duncan. Duncan was one of the few no-brainer, guaranteed superstar #1 picks in the last 20 years. The Spurs braintrust has done a great job surrounding him with the right types of talent and deserve a lot of credit for mining players like Ginobili and Parker with later picks. With that said, they have been far from infallible.

First, like all teams they have had their draft busts (Felipe Lopez, Ian Mahinmi - yes, relative as they were late picks, but still busts). They gave away Barbosa, Salmons and Scola for nothing. They have had some mediocre free agent signings (Rasho for example). And some of their role players look much better than they probably are because they play alongside the greatest PF of all time.

Again, this is not to knock the Spurs or say their front office is bad. However, when you already have your superstar, especially when he is arguably the greatest player at his position EVER, it makes your job a lot easier. It will be interesting to see how their rebuilding goes. I mean this decade along Petrie has gone from genius to idiot to genius. Dumars has gone from genius to middling. Pritchard has gone from genius to "we'll see what happens in the next year or two." And Kupchack has gone from completely incompetent to genius.

The Spurs have had a wonderful safety-blanket for the last 11 years. I don't think we can truly judge their overall competence and skill till we see what they do without him.

I'm still not entirely on board with Petrie, his free agent signings have been atroucious. His drafts have been hit and miss, but when he has hits, he has certainly hit. All that said, I see a semlance of a plan, something I havent seen for about 7 years now. So I guess, allow Petrie to take over a half decade vacation and bring him back...I guess.

because that could be said about a lot of teams...

The Knicks? The Nets? Hell, the Clippers have more talent than the Kings, but are they going in the right direction? At least the Kings are on an upward trajectory and look to be :: crosses fingers :: in good hands with a good coach and a GM who has turned a team around before. The point is, for the last several years, we've been hopeless. Now, it's looking like we have the framework in place and are on the right path. I don't think that could be said about a lot of teams, especially not teams as young and inexperienced than us.
