...(Larry) Kelley said he and four partners made their pitch to Inland two months ago, attracted by the site's potential, its central position in the region, and the possibility that it can be developed in cooperation with a planned sports and entertainment arena a few blocks away at Downtown Plaza.

"It is an important project for the community," Kelley said. "It is a critical part of downtown to be developed."

Kelley is one of a handful of local investors who recently pitched in to help buy the Sacramento Kings and keep them in Sacramento.

He said he would expect to build housing, offices, retail and entertainment venues at the railyard but said he will let the market, as well as city officals and residents, help his group decide over time what gets built...

Dear god, why do I ever read the comments on the Bee webpage? It makes my head hurt. Actual development at the Railyards site is long overdue. This and the downtown plaza development should both help each other. I would expect them to go the same direction most major cities are right now with mixed use residential/commercial to bring more people in from the suburbs and back to the downtown area.

If you copy and paste the article onto your notepad before you read it, you don't have to worry about the comments. ;)

The most useful button on the sacbee site: commentsHide.gif

You'll find it at the bottom of every article. It usually keeps me and my morbid curiosity from looking. Usually.

Nothing wrong with offices. If you're going to have more people living in downtown, you'll need more places for them to work.

How about a stadium? Oakland is probably losing the A's and Raiders here pretty soon if they don't get one built so why not move the team up to Sac and make an awesome multi purpose stadium that has great seats for both venues. 65000 seats for football and 45000 seats for baseball.

There is literally no way in hell Sacramento would approve a multi-purpose stadium. None, nada, zip, zero, zilch. You think people like STOP are a pain with the ESC? Wait and see the trainwreck that would result from trying to get funding for a project of that magnitude. And a lot of the money for opposition would undoubtedly come from southern California, where they're desperately working to get an NFL team back into the LA area.

I haven't been paying attention but I thought one of the reasons why Oakland was on the verge of losing those teams is because multi-purpose stadiums for NFL/MLB are archaic and no more?

Correct. Oakland Coliseum is the last stadium in the US that houses both MLB and NFL. Minnesota and Miami were the final 2 before Oakland but the Twins moved into Target Field in 2010 and the Marlins moved into their own crib in 2012.

Oakland is most likely losing the Raiders to LA. They need to get $300 million in funding from the city of Oakland and it's most likely a no go.

They are losing the Warriors to San Francisco so that leaves the A's. You would think that they would do what they could to save the only remaining team but the owner doesn't want to be there. He wants to move to San Jose. He's most likely going to ask for almost all of the money to be public dollars so he probably won't get it either.

Which brings us back to the Raiders. If $300 million is what it takes to keep at least one team in town, they may just find a way to do it. I just don't know where they will get that type of money from. They'll need some serious naming rights dollars.

Let's get an arena built downtown first, folks. That battle is a long way from over. Truthfully, after over two years and more to come, I'm done fighting for arena/stadiums in this lifetime.
