Lehane vs. Magoofs, round 5000

The issue surfaced last week after a media report indicated the Maloof family, owners of the Kings, recently had a private investigator look into whether signatures on the letter were forged.

Chris Lehane, head of the mayor's Think Big Sacramento arena advocacy group, responded Monday evening with a letter to the U.S. Attorney General asking it to investigate whether the Kings are violating any laws by harassing and intimidating "citizens of the region who have expressed concerns about the Maloof family's stewardship of the Kings."

My favorite line from the article though,
Lukowicz said one of his managers later got a call from a man saying he was representing the Maloofs, asking if Lukowicz had actually signed the letter. Lukowicz said he did not call the man back. "I'm busier than the Maloofs if they have time to waste on that."

So, of the 21 signatures, they're now acknowledging that 5 were done by proxy. And of those 5, 2 expressed "misgivings" on seeing their names on the letter. I'm not very happy that there were some irregularities with the signatures but I'm still totally baffled about what the Maloofs are trying to prove. They seem to be flailing their arms wildly about and accomplishing nothing but further alienation of a number of the people who have until now supported them.

I honestly believe this will get uglier than we could possibly imagine.

But wait, there's more.

Jason Jones

Maloof spokesman Eric Rose says "Think Big" built on "fabrication and deception" and name should be changed to "Thing Big Fraud."

Just as we thought. The little boys have zero clue how stupid they look running down this petty stuff. This is like guilty people pointing fingers at others hoping they look less guilty. Get a clue boys, you are trying to erase the Sacramento Kings form existence. You should expect nothing less than both barrels of the shotgun.

So, as it becomes increasingly obvious to one and all that the Maloofs are bound and determined to utilize a scorched earth policy, at what point does Stern step in? The Maloofs aren't destroying their enemies; if anything, they're destroying themselves and pretty much obliterating any chance of success in an anti-trust suit while they're at it.

Since nothing happened as a result of the letter with the five questionable signatures, it's a moot point. It's not like the Maloofs formally asked the BOG for approval to relocate, but they said no because of this letter. What difference does it make? I'd like to see Think Big draft a new letter from the business leaders from Sacramento and present it to David Stern, this time with hundreds of signatures on it.

That would be excellent!

Reality spokesman Capt. Factorial says "Maloof Sports and Entertainment" built on "daddy's hard-earned money" and name should be changed to "Maloof Pissing Away Our Trust Fund".

Reality spokesman Capt. Factorial adds "Boys Who Cried Wolf" bad nickname for Maloofs because actual boy who cried wolf told the truth once.

Secretaries have been signing letters for their bosses dating back to when Washington's secretary did it. What's the crime? It is the spirit of the matter that counts.

I'd be willing to bet just about anything that such a project is already underway.

I know I shouldn't be so skeptical/cynical, but am I the only one who sees "desperate money grab" in this?

Remember when they sent at attorney to a reporter's house regarding Phil jackson's comments about them? These boys are way to emotionally stable to be owners. They used to be the darlings of the NBA. Now they are an embarrassment to all sports owners.

I'm guessing you meant "emotionally UNstable"... and I agree.

Watching this all unfold is like watching "Abbott and Costello meet The Three Stooges in Bizarro World".

Are there ways of sending petitions to the NBA signed via the use of a printed name and an email adress to identify the signer? If so, let's get on it. I think the people of the area the Kings respresent should have a say in this matter. The Maloofs are making the NBA look like they tolerate this kind of abusive behavior to the very people who pay the salaries of the players and, if the team were properly managed, pour money into the pockets of the owners.

I actually did send the NBA a note on this topic. I asked them if they endorsed their owners sending PIs out to grill their business partners with questions? Not exactly part of their NBA Cares Program.

Okay so to be clear what does all of this REALLY mean to the bottom line of things.

IMO: Just take the "REALLY" out of your sentence and add "REALITY SHOW" - that about sums it up. Stay tunned for the next bizarre twist and turn episode. Hopefully, Georgie gets booted off the island real soon.

It means that we're living in the middle of Wonderland, with the Mad Hatter, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and the Red Queen...along with the Three Stooges.

"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."

from http://www.jabberwocky.com/carroll/walrus.html

Seriously? I don't think anyone knows what will happen. The Maloofs are taking ridiculous self-destruction to incredible heights. I'd love to hear what they really expect to get out of all this - not from their mouthpiece, but when they're talking among themselves. I can't help but worry that this will all end up as part of next season's "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills".

This is Dodgers drama times a thousand. Which hopefully means that Demarcus will be Matt Kemp times 1000 once all this drama washes over and C-Webb is our owner

That they absolutely and unequivocally want to move this team as soon as possible / as soon as their new anti trust lawyer says they can apply. They are upset, paranoid, delusional, and irrational in their desire to grab a deal in Anaheim, which they view as a much needed wind fall for the family but was wrongfully put on hold by Kj and the NBA. They figured they only needed to wait 12 months and would be gone by now.

At this point, they believe the NBA and kj conspired to push them into an arena deal that would have caused them to take on enough debt that it would have caused them to loose the team. Because the NBA and city are tired of their act, they probably now believe the meeting in Orlando was a conspiracy to unseat them with the debt associated with a bad deal and usher in Burkle, because it is otherwise impossible to remove and owner absent a default or fellony.

They detest the NBA, kj, and probably Sacramento and it's fans. They view this as clearly over and they wished you would just drop the carade and let them move. Because they are also paranoid some other team might grab the Anahiem market, it's scorched earth time to keep slowly pushing this team out the door and get suckers to keep them from loosing a fortune as they wait. They are willing to loose the remaining equity in the team or risk repossession or contraction to accomplish those goals.

Basically, take the owner from major league and make her more angry, bitter, paranoid, and desperate. But they remain committed to Sac and really hope to see you at Arco

In my opinion they are trying REALLY REALLY hard to make the Sacramento citizens and the Mayor hate them so much that we say "I don't care if they take the team. F-Them". They seem to be doing a good job at that.

I can't believe that Stern and the other owners are just going to stay mum about the Maloofs heaping abuse on the city of Sacramento, it's business community, and the fans. The only reason to stay mum, is the real possibility of a lawsuit. I wish the league would make a pre=-emptive strike and sue the Maloofs first for damages to the reputation and business of the NBA.

Right now I just feel like crap that Kings fans are stuck with these colossal clowns. No fans should have to put up with such rotten mistreatment.

EDIT: I can pretty much guarantee that Lehane and the other Think Big business leaders are each smarter and more capable businesspeople than all of the Maloof brothers combined.

Here's the problem. We are all really excited and hopeful the league will save us and give us new owners in the process. Objectively, if you stack the Maloofs last 10 years beside Donald Sterlings, the Maloofs look like saints. The aren't worse even if you take the past 4 months, vs Sterlings worst. Really, read up not just on the neglect but the racism and sexual harassment. If the NBA takes no action there forever, I can see how the NBA saves the Kings. I think the Maloofs have to wait 2 or 3 years, but in the end the team will move

I'm not convinced the Maloofs can last that long financially.

Yeah this is reminding me of when the Charlotte Hornets left for New Orleans.

All the more reason for Sacramento, Stern, and the fans to take the high road. Despite the lunacy, this seems like a winnable battle. The Maloofs are the boyfriend acting like a complete a-hole in order to get you to dump them.

I'm sure the silence from the other side is driving the Maloofs absolutely batty. I like it.

I'm not sure that asking the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the Maloofs for potential federal crimes exactly qualifies as "silence".

I missed something ......... what possible federal crimes do they think the Maloofs might've broken? When was this request made ...........?

Here is a link to the letter that Lehane sent to the U.S. Attorney General: (LINK TO PDF)

A lot of this seems to revolve around the fact that a former FBI agent was used as the PI, and apparently identified himself as such (presumably former).

In short, Lehane is asking the Justice Department to look into:
1) Whether the Maloofs violated federal harassment laws by using "color of law" in the guy identifying himself as a former FBI agent
2) Whether the Maloofs were party to impersonation of a federal law enforcement officer
3) Whether 1) or 2) could constitute interstate crimes because the Maloofs live in Las Vegas

I don't think anything will come of it (unless he identified himself as a CURRENT FBI agent), but it's certainly a shot across the bow.
