nash is responsible for turning a mediocre team into the best team in the league. james had turned a bad/mediocre team into a decent yet struggling team. the suns just beat the nugget minus their second best player (stoudamire). nash is solely responsible for that team's success. james is having a solid year, but his stats aren't good enough for him to be mvp calibur, and his team hasn't done enough, either. ai gets more assists and has lead his team to similar results in a similar situation, and the fact that he leads the league in scoring would make him a better mvp candidate. (no, im not saying ai should be mvp, but that the only standards you could use to make lebron mvp would put ai ahead of him, meaning those standards are wrong) to be mvp you either have to have insanely good stats or lead your team to elite status. james has neither.
26 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists a game isn't good enough for him to be MVP caliber? Not to mention over two steals a game, he's shooting close to 50% from the field and about 35% from outside. It's not about stats; it's about whether or not his team is a winning team, and right now, it's not a winning team.
Nash is probably the front runner for MVP since Duncan went down, with Shaq closely following him. But it's not his individual stats that put him at the front of the pack; it's about what he's meant to his team this season, in the Western conference, with a bunch of youngsters.
And, by the way, that's the reason that the Suns don't win without Nash, not because of the quality of the team (far superior to the Cavs without LeBron), but because of Steve's role. He's a true point guard who can do everything you want your point guard to be able to do offensively, and he has the most athletic frontcourt in the League. That's a dangerous mix.
For LeBron to even be talked about in the MVP discussions is amazing to me, considering his age and his level of experience. And then when you consider that it's not just talent, but the way he handles himself, it blows the average basketball fan away.
Check out this excerpt from last night's
recap:
James repeatedly drove to the basket early after shooting 10-for-28 in an overtime loss to Chicago on Thursday night.
Malone told James after that game to try to avoid taking jump shots early in the shot clock. James shot 13-for-21 against the Kings.
He's coachable, he's talented, he's athletic and he's young. That's the ideal player, and he's making the best of his situation. Pretty soon, he's going to be the best player in the NBA. Real soon.
