Last year's Kings squad allowed most 3-pointers in NBA history according to NBA.com/stats

I would of bet we had it the worst seasonally. But not the worst in history.

The short corner 3 has been worthy of nightmares for awhile now.

23rd in opponent 3PT% and we're actually 29th in the league in opponent 3PTM when controlling for pace.

Interestingly enough, the Kings are dead last in opponent 3PTM during this preseason (when controlling for pace) and 26th in opponent 3PT% so Joerger hasn't been much more successful thus far. Hopefully that trend changes in the regular season when we play our better players more often...

It won't change, if we don't limit our TO's and Cousins/KK do a better job in the pick&roll defense departement.

I remember the Kings allowed a crap load of 3s in the preseason.

If Joeger truly is a defensive coach, then his numbers need to go down, drastically. I really don't get why people are complaining about Karls' pace.

Joeger's pace feels pretty damn fast too.

They drove me mad last season with the complete lack of effort and incompetent defense I watched last year. Rondo had to go, opposing guards had him and Ben circled on the calendar.

Our overall preseason numbers are deceptive because of the rank incompetence of our kids. Pump those main guys' minutes up to normal levels and we should be ok. Cuz/Koufos/Gay/Afflalo/Lawson or Collison were doing good work, and an organized bench featuring Barnes, Lawson/Collison, Tolliver, WCS, Temple as a SG has too many good/solid defenders to get in too much trouble.

I have some fears about this happening again this season because much of what Joerger is doing defensively so far goes a long way into giving up those shots. He plays Koufos and Cuz in the front court and has both zone off the pick and roll which creates open opportunities in the high post for guards. When that happened against the Clippers and the Kings were getting destroyed in pick and roll Joerger started to have the wing defenders switch and help back in the paint while the big played up. That's the same game plan Keith Smart put in place. Which is not good thing.

The only answers are fighting over screens almost every time, giving up the paint, playing better pick and roll defending combinations, using a different strategy like icing pick and rolls, or switching more. Tolliver and Willie Cauley-Steins defense was much better and they were able to hedge out farther over the screen than Koufos and Cuz so playing them with Cuz and/or Koufos more is probably the best option IMO if he's dead set against switching. I would also like to see them use more icing. Thibs has practically made a career out of it. I don't think you should rely on it as much as he does, but using it as a part of the plan couldn't hurt.

I'm not sure that it's even fair to ask them to. They kind of are what they are, two big centers, with not a ton of help on the wing defensively in terms of all world defenders.

Which is exactly why I made the comment that hopefully that changes when the kiddies are on the pine for the entire game.

Just for fun, I pulled the teams stats with Farmar, I. Cousins, Patterson, Richardson, Labissiere, & Papagiannis on the bench for this preseason. Opponent 3PT% dropped to 34.7% (15th in the league), but 3PM per 100 possessions was still dead last in the league at 10.9 threes per 100 possessions.

It helps to defend the players at the 3 point line. I know that sounds simple but how many open 3 point shots did opposing teams take last year? Preseason is practice games so the stats for those mean little IMO.

True. That's why Cousins is a bit of an old school big and That's why I enjoy watching him so much.
KAT, Ad, Noel etc. can all step out way further in the pick&roll without giving up too much. With Cousins we have to find ways to Limit his one major weakness. That's why I prefer him playing with Tolliver or Barnes. Cousins is at his best with mobile teammates. I'm not a fan of this big lineup with Cuz and Kk.

Some of that is matchups. In our 6 preseason games we faced Golden State once (led NBA teams preseason 3PM) the Lakers twice (4th in preseason 3PM -- Walton is GS disciple) and Maccabi Haifa, who we crushed, but who was second among all preseason teams (to another Euro team -- in fact Top 4 were all Euro teams, because what else are you going to do?) in three pointers bombed. Clips were middling in preseason, but then we threw our backup backcourt at Paul/Reddick and they got bombed. And Wsh was treated as a bit of a Kentucky exhibition game.

I'm not a basketball genius or anything, but I always had a hunch that the "don't guard the three point line" strategy wasn't the best...
