Knicks Sign Jerome James

All-Star
Howard Beck/NY Times - Jerome James, who played the last four seasons in Seattle, agreed yesterday to a five-year deal with the Knicks, according to his agent. Precise terms will not be set until the league completes its new labor deal. But it was expected that James will earn about $5 million in the first year of the contract, and $29 million over five years.

Before the contract is signed, James will be installed as the starting center, a job he will win by default. The Knicks traded their only true center, Nazr Mohammed, in February, and traded his replacement, Kurt Thomas, in June. The team drafted a center, Channing Frye, but he may not be ready for full-time work as a rookie.

So the void will be filled by James, a 7-foot-1 journeyman who turns 30 in November and has career averages of 4.9 points and 3.5 rebounds a game.

"It was clear once they moved Kurt Thomas and moved Nazr that they were in need of a real center, and that's what Jerome is," said James's agent, Marc Fleisher. "He's looking forward to the challenge."

Sorry, this isn't the full article-requires subscription.

All I have to say is, the Knicks are about to go into full-blown suck mode. 5 years for an unproven 30 year old 7 footer? At 29 million? This is absolutely absurd.

tell me about it

very idiotic move

i pray jerome doesnt do well :) sorry jerome (only kind of)

now all they need is an overrated power forward you likes to hang around the perimeter and launch 3's all day.

...hmm...I wonder where Isiah could find someone like that...

James is the master at securing ludicrous contracts. May be the first man in history with his level of skills to earn $60mil over a career. Getting one stupid contract is one thing, but managing to pull it off again...what was his agent's name again? Sign me up!

When I first signed onto Kingsfans, on the very first screen, I saw "Knicks sign Jerome" outa the corner of my eye, and nearly fainted, because I though I read "Kings sign Jerome James."

Phew, I'm relived.

Well Jerome will give them toughness. Something Nazr has never had. Jerome got an undeserved contract for a very good series against the Kings. But he can defend the paint and rough you up inside. So it is a good signing for them but the money is way too much.

30 million for a 29 year old who struggles to average 4 and 3 and burns one team with no interior D for a few games. sadly for knicks fans this is one of the least overs isiah or layden has paid to a player...

Yeah...and that toughness will last through maybe the first 3 games of the season, and then will dissappear after 5 minutes of every other game when James either decides he doesn't feel like playing today or gets into foul trouble before anyone even gets subed in (probably because well, he doesn't feel like playing, and fouling is the easiest way to the bench)

knicks are looking a lil scary in the east with steph, quentin richardson, crawford, james...not too bad..
