League sources have told Steve Adamek of the Bergen Record, the 76ers have approached the Knicks about a trade for Chris Webber, but weren't satisfied with Isiah Thomas' offer.

Quentin Richardson, who has $33.8 million over four seasons left on his contract and Maurice Taylor, whose $9.75 million contract expires after this season, were the starting points of the Knicks' offer.

Because of Webber's hefty salary, the Knicks would have to send additional pieces to Philadelphia. [READ]

Just when we all thought he was untradable after his major surgery, he might get traded for the second time. I have a really hard time believing that Isiah is actually trying to improve the New York Knicks. Last thing they need is another huge contract. Let alone the highest paid player in the league with 2 bummed knees.

Apparently he's unfamiliar with a technique used by teams called REBUILDING.

Actually that would have been a coup for the Knicks, not only getting an established, if aging, star level player for two random spare parts, but cleaning out one of their long term killer contracts in Richardson. Webb only has 2 years (this year and next) left on his deal, could have real value as an ender next year, or better yet could have cleared $20+mil from the Knicks books after next season. Taylor is an ender, but unloading one of the forever deals makes it a wash contract wise.

By all rights Zeke should fail. He's an arrogant preening little **** who has ****ed up everything he has touched in basketball since retiring as a player. But do not entirely underestimate the chance for a turnaround in Knickland. Their acquisitions this summer, shaky draft pick and all, were much needed hustler/defender types (Balkman + now Jeffries), they've got some promising young guys, and they've actually got a whole crapload of salary coming off the books this season. If, and this is always the impossible "if" in Knickland, they would just hire a GM with an ounce of bleeping patience (+ a mandate from the owner to be patient) they could clear out the vast majroity of their financial idiocy within 3 years and start over.

Indeed, Brick. Good to see someone else point that out. I think they'll be a better team next year.

Oddly, I think moving Webber to the Knicks would benefit both sides. Iverson needs "spare parts" as he can't deal with other superstars, and well, we'd see how things work out with Marbury. In any case, while, yes, it would explode the Knicks' salary for the next two years, it would certainly bring a better team on the floor as Chris does well with the ball in his hands...or it could all explode.

right. this is laughable. they will suck. I give Charlotte and Portland better chances of turning themselves around.

yup. 100% agree

Acquiring over-priced, over-the-hill former All-stars with MASSIVE egos, isnt really the way to improve your team.

Brick,
Sure Webber's contract ends in two years. But the thing is, Isiah Thomas doesnt have 2 years! Which goes against the purpose of wanting Webber. You made some good points and I agree that his expiring contract in a few years will be worth a lot. But as of right now, there is no bigger risk player in the entire NBA than Chris Webber.

Ron just wanted some KFC bee-otch!

Ha! The deal we got for Webb ain't looking so bad now. You know the Knicks would have only done it if they could unload James on Philly. Philly is better off just playing the lotto this year and next and let Webbers contract come off the books. Then Webber can go to a contender for the minimum.

Nor is trading said player for junk contracts.

They don't need to wait two years. He isn't incapacitated; he's capable of contributing right now. It's only a risk if you have something to lose, and the Knicks have very little to lose at this point.

And I rank aging Shaq, Kenyon Martin, Zach Randolph much higher on that "high risk" list. Those contracts go on forever.

When I heard this, I couldn't decide whether to cry or throw up. I don't think even him being there could make me like the NYK.
I guess if King couldn't move AI, Chris was the next option.

I think the sixers are the only team that would seriously consider trading any or all of their players, no building blocks I can think of. maybe AI2
