Really awesome move here by the Maloofs, who so many of you wanted to burn at the stake and bad mouthed like crazy.

at one point the maloofs were considered to be some of the best owners in basketball...

they need a new arena the Kings need a new arena, sacramento needs a new arena... thats all this was ever about...

hopefully KJ can deliver in more ways than one now...

I was mad at the Maloofs and think they could have treated the fans better. I will never feel quite the same way about them as I once did. However, no matter how much anyone dislikes them, they are the owners of the Kings and we all need to work together to get an arena deal done. Yes, I would kiss their butts, if that's what it takes to get this done and keep our Kings here.

.....and those people who bad mouthed them will deny it now... ;)

I doubt there will be any rooster crowing.

Regardless of how you feel (and yes, while I didn't like the fact that they're trying to move the team to Anaheim, I can respect the reason for their move), the creation of an arena is paramount to any judging and namecalling at this time. We all need to work together or the team is gone. They're not back in my good graces because KJ is representing the team. That is a nice gesture for sure, but until they (and the people of Sacramento) have an arena with the Kings inside, they (and the people of Sac) won't be in my good graces.

Finish the job.

the magoofs don't really have a choice. they know that the nba is forcing them to act in good faith. they also know that they need to get fans in the seats this season, which means making nice with the fans and KJ, the new hero of sacramento.

if the maloofs can build a new arena and commit to fielding a winning team, i'll probably eventually forgive them for the anaheim disaster. but if you think people are going to forget- or should apologize for hating the maloofs, then you are nuts.

It'll take much more than one appointment to get them back on the good list.

yah.. I will not throw anything at them when they go to the games, but I will not kiss their butts and praise them ever again. They really hurt a lot of fans, and you heard it on Grant's show, if they don't get an arena deal off the ground by next March then they are leaving no matter what the fans do.

Just curious, but would you blame them then? What would you do? Seriously Gary, if you were the owner of the team and, god forbid, this latest arena deal falls through, what would you do if you were them?

If I was the owner of the team I would be stinking rich, and wouldn't pin all my hopes of positive cash flows on a professional sports franchise. Seriously though, I don't know what I would do. I am too loyal to Sacramento to leave. I would probably assume sell the team before moving it if I was the owner but I wouldn't be in the situation where I NEEDED to make money on a pro sports franchise either like the Maloofs seemed to do. The Kings would be the first thing I sold if I was in trouble of going broke. You don't buy into a sports franchise in a small market to make money. At least not make a living off of.

I would put a stipulation in the sell papers that the team had to stay here in sac though or I wouldn't sell (unless it was the only way I could sell). Personally though, no, i would never move the team if I was the owner.

Howard Shultz kind of "tried" that. It did not go well

Yah I would just end up selling then. If I owned the Kings, and have lived in Sac for 35 years I would NEVER move the team. I would sell them before I would ever move them. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I moved them.

But I would never be in a situation if I owned the Kings where I was depending on the revenue from the team to make ends meat as well. Even if there was a better deal out there I wouldn't move the team. If I was in financial distress the team would be the FIRST thing I sold though.

Just because the Maloofs were FORCED to stay in Sac another year, and they are trying to make the best of what they see as a bad situation, does NOT mean they are suddenly OK.
Appointing KJ to represent was a smart business move - that's it.
Just like them trying to take off on Sacto and leave to Anaheim the way they did was a BAD business move.

Every time I hear a Maloof in an interview answer "Yeah, the Kings fans have always been the best - that's why we chose to stay here" I am getting past the stage of annoyed and starting to get pissed off at the blatant baldfaced insulting lie.

I hope KJ is busily preparing the presentation he's going to be making to the ping pong ball machine!

No need. He has the Powerball™ machine in his back pocket. Stern is again impressed, and awards the first pick to the Kings.

Having KJ present as a figurehead for the draft lotto is cool and all but Kings fans aren't just going to go back to loving the Maloofs because of it.

I know this was directed at Gary but i'd like to give a shot at answering it, too. If it were me, I'd renovate the current arena. New fixtures and updated aesthetics alone would make a world of difference. Then I'd focus on making sure the team was good so i could sell out the arena. To me, that would be preferable to sharing a market with two NBA teams in a marginally better and similarly sized arena in Anaheim.

I’ve never bought into the “Arco can’t be renovated” argument. Any building can be renovated provided it’s not literally on the verge of collapse. The powers that be simply don’t want to renovate Arco.

It really can't. There's a sticky addressing the whole issue. A renovation would be tantamount to scraping out the insides and starting over, which would cause its collapse anyway.

Here it is:
Reasons Arco Needs to be Replaced

Did you actually read the engineer's reports that the city had done long ago? The cheapo foundation cannot support the renovation needed to be acceptable to the league. The foundation is not good enough. That's a huge problem.

That means an adequate renovation would require a complete demolition and rebuild, which was estimated to be more costly than just buidling a new arena. As someone who has been a lender on rehab deals, let me tell you that is no joke. If a rehab is going to be that extensive, it is not cost effective to renovate.

Yes I've seen the reports. And I've also seen other reports that claim it could be renovated. At any rate, my answer was only intended to convey what i would be focused on doing were I in the situation. I'm not looking to nor am I qualified to get into a big arena debate.

ARCO also not big enough to handle what the NBA requires. Perhaps it could be renovated but in no way would it meet NBA standards.

No it isn't. It would be shut down if it was.

I think what we have to agree on, is that if what we come up with is the renovation of ARCO (I can't stand the other name) the Kings are gone. Its pretty clear that the League is looking for a new arena. Obviously the Maloofs are looking for a new arena. So whether a renovation is possible or not is immaterial at this point of the conversation.

I totally agree. I was only saying what i personally would try and do if i owned the team. I get that in reality a renovation isn't happening for a number of reasons.

The main shortcoming seems to be luxury boxes, not seating capacity. Does anyone know if any other NBA arenas have near the same amount of luxury boxes that Arco has?

As I haven't been to all the arena's in the league, and I'm too lazy right now to do the research, I can only speak to the one's I've been in. The L.A. arena has more luxury boxes than ARCO, and Portland has more Luxury boxes than ARCO. In most cases, most of all the newer arena's have more boxes, and the some of the one's that I've seen are larger than the boxes at ARCO.

Obviously the team makes more money off the boxes. What I wonder is how much money does a box go for at ARCO. Since one of the downfalls of sacramento is the lack of corporations in the area, I wonder how hard it is to sell a luxury box. And if it is a hard sell, would having more of them really help. I certainly don't know, and maybe I'm off in left field on this one.
