Kings trade Tyrese and Buddy for Sabonis and Holiday and Lamb

thats kind of unacceptable . They may not have gotten anyone better than Sabonis, But why not drum up a bidding war
I mean, we really wanted Sabonis. It was pretty clear reading the tea leaves he was option 2 behind Simmons if that was even really there. Perhaps we have another trade or two lined up that will make it make more sense two. Surely Monte knows what he can get for Holmes or Barnes and factored that in. And please, if "other GMs knew" like they don't call and ask? Maybe they called and low-balled and now they're butt hurt about it? I am guessing suddenly other GMs have their feet to the fire because a promising young player went out nobody thought was gettable?

It's like they think we traded Hali for Dewayne Dedmon and Corey Joseph or something. Am I crazy or is Sabonis not a 2-time All-star?
Hali has been an analytics wet dream since the NBA draft.... No matter who we got back, we would be seen as insane for trading him away. Again, I think it's a fair trade... we're not talking Vlade Kangz fleecing here.

The one thing I am legit shocked at, was that it was basically a player for player trade. Granted, Hali is still a young asset, but those almost NEVER happen (of any significance) anymore.

I'll say it again... at least I'm interested in this team for a couple days again.

Can someone who feels this is a good trade please elaborate on what Sabonis brings to this team? It is mind boggling hilarious that all the people that like this trade are just repeating the same words over and over ... "all-star" ... "19-12". Like basketball is not just about counting stats. Just asking because it seems there is a lot of people in this thread getting on people for criticizing this trade (such as me), but yet are bringing nothing of substance to the table of why they actually like this trade besides empty cliches & phrases ...

- How will the Kings build a defense around Sabonis as a big?
- How will Mitchell & Fox coesist in the backcourt as two smallish guards?
- Explain how to solve the issue of the Kings 3 core pieces now (Fox, Sabonis, Mitchell) all being non-shooters?
- Where will the playmaking come from now? Fox & Mitchell are horrible passers and rarely set up the bigs
- How will they solve the forward problem now? Free agency? How are these shooters available that the Kings can sign to mask Fox/Sabonis not being able to shoot?

But hey Sabonis is an "all-star" so all these issues don't exist.
They can coexist in the G-League

These are all legitimate questions but how in the world are they ever going to get started on building anything without making a move first? A team 15 games below .500 ain't gonna fix all of these things with one trade. Getting a greater young talent just doesn't feel like a loss to me, period. Sabonis is a solid playmayer and passer himself, btw. Idk .. i just don't see how keeping Haliburton was going to greatly improve the future if everyone claims our other assets are so scarce. So, we keep Tyrese and all the other guys people claim no one wants? What was that going to do?
Exactly. Listen, I don't feel great about this trade and will leave it at that.

BUT.
  • the team was really bad. The status quo was intolerable
  • w/any luck, more dominoes will fall
  • turns out that Monte is looking for deals with GM who also want to improve their teams
  • we have no idea what was offered for whom
  • we don't actually know how this will all work out.
The only thing we've heard that REALLY gives me pause about Monte's competence, if true, was the quote, ostensibly from a team official, to the effect that if the Kings had made it clear that Tyrese was gettable the team would have aggressively put together an offer for him.

If THAT'S true - that Monte didn't make clear that he was open to dealing Tyrese, such that we'll never know what other packages might have been offered -- well, sheeee-it, that'd beyond outrageous and ALL bets are off. And the fact that Woj was apparently *shocked* that Tyrese was included lends credence to the quote.

Because we were the ones bidding on Sabonis. We weren’t trying to sell off Tyrese. We were looking to Buy something and had to pay a certain price. It’s not like we were just looking to spend a hundred dollars in whatever way we felt like.
if he’s on the table and there is league wide interest. Then it is your duty as a GM to maximize the value of your biggest asset. To hear other teams say they were stunned is a little, well, stunning.

Anybody defending or supporting this trade needs to go bye bye with Vivek and Monte.

Like them you don’t know what you don’t know and are in complete denial.

Most of the basketball world is scratching their head and in shock over this deal.

But they’re all wrong and the franchise that hasn’t got much of anything right the past 15 years and practically nothing right during the near 9 years of the current ownerships tenure is suddenly the sole voice of reason?

Give me a break.

Building around a young, lengthy play making guard is what any worthwhile GM would do in todays climate.

Anybody denying or fighting against that is utterly lost.

The fact that the one of the worst franchises in professional sports — if not the worst — thought this was a good deal is ALL the evidence I need to support my take. Track record says ALL.

I'm keeping an open mind about the Fox-Sabonis chemistry. The thing about Sabonis is that he can actually outlet the ball for fast breaks off of defensive rebounds, which should benefit Fox if the Kings' coaching staff does their job.
that last part stung

I don't love the deal but it's at least understandable. As for the part I bolded, could it be that most of these people are so shook that they didn't get the scoop? That the Kings didn't trade Fox to a top 6 team for nothing? Or a typical LOL KANGZ move, because at least - ON PAPER - we actually got the best player in the whole deal.

Is this Webber 2.0? I don't think so. But again, on paper we got the best player. Do I like the value for value, hmmm, not really.

-Sabonis isn't as bad a defender as people try to make him out to be. He's an incredible rebounder (offensive and defensive) and can be a good team defender. He's not a rim protector though, nor is he a good defender in space. Find the right fit (PJ Washington) and he'll be fine. Metrics have been higher on him over the years than his perception.
-Mitchell has had 0 problems checking any guard size in the league. Not an issue
-Here's your first and only issue. But Mitchell has been a 37% 3pt shooter on 7 3's per game as a starter. Kings have to hope he can keep that consistency.
-What? Sabonis is one of the best playmakers in the NBA and is only 2nd to Jokic as a big man passer/playmaker. If anything, we're net-improving the playmaking because you're adding elite playmaking from the big man slot.
-You have Holmes/Barnes/Bagley/Len/Lamb and the FRP's to figure out how to fix the forward slots. Still assets to work with (and McNair needs to fix)

Sabonis impact metrics are off the charts good this season too. He wasn't an all-star, but he certainly still had all-star level impact across the board.

Any more questions?
You dismiss his lack of rim protection rather easily as not a big issue … PJ Washington isn’t covering for that. Now I can see a scenario of say the Toronto route of getting guys like Pascal Siakham or Scottie Barnes but those guys don’t grow on trees. And even if they get those guys, goes back to shooting. They work in Toronto because Van Fleet and Gary Trent can shoot as well as anyone. Opposite of Fox & Mitchell. Mitchell can guard any guard in the league? I disagree
- so basically your answer is Sabonis is the playmaker on the team? Well good luck turning him into The Joker.

I just think it’s impossible to build enough shooting AND defense around Fox/Sabonis. Not even using hyperbole, like literally impossible I mean unless they sign 2 superstars. They have basically set themselves up where they have to have two ELITE shooters And defenders at the forward spot and even then I don’t see this team as anything more than a .500 team.

I mean no offense but you really believe the answer to the defensive question marks is having this lineup which you insinuated -

PG - Fox
SG - Mitchell
SF - xxx
PF - Washington
C - Sabonis

Honestly you can put Kevin Freakin Durant at the 3 spot and that team won’t be a contender. Would have no paint protection and teams would just pack the paint and focus on Durant. That’s a common theme. Literally need two more valuable players at the forwards spots in my opinion to compensate for lack of shooting / defense the core provide.
