[Game] Kings @ Timberwolves - 11/2/12 - 5pm PDT

If Smarts philosophy is go very deep into the bench then i assume he's drilled every player on the offense.

(i assume)

So there's no excuse for people standing still and the one pass and shoot garbage that we saw last night, i couldn't believe when i saw Tyreke feed CHUCK HAYES in the post and wander to the other side of the court and stand still. Dude, make a move, demand the ball if you want to be the star.

There's absolutely no way Smart is actively telling players to take contested jumpers with 20 seconds on the shot clock, he's definitely not telling them to pick up dumb fouls on charges, he sure as hell isn't calling ISO plays for Chuck Hayes in the post where he's terrible.

I don't like his rotation/12 deep policy at all but blaming him for absolutely everything is just nonsense.

How often did we even see a two man game last night? hardly ever, Jimmer and Hayes completed a couple of P&R moves. Cuz always fades on the P&R so generally that leads to nothing unless you're playing an agressive defensive team and you have a guard who can pass over a double. Try reke in that role?!

We have Cuz and we never try and get him deep post position.

We have reke and we crowd the lane so he can't do anything.

We have Jimmer and MT who we never run off screens... ever.

On nights where we can run we will win games, no question but you will never move past the 28/30 win mark without an OFFENSE!

King, I don't post very often, but I have to give you props for your perfect summation. Great post!

We need to get Cuz down low in the deep post more often, instead of constantly relying on his outside shot. I guess it would also help if he could stay on the floor for a few minutes without committing unnecessary fouls. I don't mind the banging fouls, as that's to be expected here and there, it's those reaching in and frustration fouls that kill me. Cuz has to find a way to get past those.

We need to set plays where we clear the lane for Tyreke, so he can do his magic, and if the defense collapses, he can quickly pass it out for a wide open three.

And I'll never understand why they aren't running screens for MT and Jimmer. Two of the best pure shooters and yet they have to somehow create. Dumb.

Is it really that difficult? Hmmmm....I guess so.

Definitly Agree On The Bold...

Believe it or not, Cuz getting the ball in the post isn't always pretty...actually, it can be the ugliest thing on the basketball court. Turnovers, bricks and offensive fouls. I'm not saying he doesn't have his moments, but he's a black hole at times and very inefficient.

I'm watching the game again, the very first play of the game we run is a good play IMO.

IT hands off to Tyreke at the at the top of the key.

we run a cross screen to get Cousins in the post against Pek, Cuz can either take it deep and back his man down or face up for the shot which he does and he nails it.

Good play and one we should run multiple times IMO.

THEN look at THIS the second play of the game about the most horrible play you'll ever see

Johnson shows for the ball at the high post.

but look where he collects it!!

everyone just stands on the other side of the court doing nothing and cuz stands next to johnson asking for the ball back.

He gets it and Johnson spends 4 seconds, yes 4 seconds adjusting his SOCK.

There's absolutely no movement and cousins just jacks a shot from there which bricks.

after getting great success, less than 24 seconds later you get that. Thats what we're dealing with, IMO that shows a lack of on court leadership, because you can bet your bottom dollar smart called the first play and clearly no one on the court is capable of running an offense.

Good post UK.

That is a problem we've had since late last year. We're just iso'ing Cuz 20ft away, and not running any offense off him. Yes Cuz is being a bit of a blackhole, but at the same time we're not giving him any options. There's just no movement off him, which is ridiculous, given the attention he draws and his passing ability. Poor spacing, little movement, maybe a random cutter every now and then, but it's just a terrible use of his skills, not to mention he's not getting touches within 15ft.

But then we get into Smart is basically doing that for all our players. Iso JT. Iso JJ. Iso Outlaw. Iso MT. Brooks/IT not running any offense. Only guy we don't iso that much is Reke, surprisingly. And even when we do iso those guys, the spacing is just terrible and there's little movement. But why we're calling timeouts to iso JJ, I just can't come up with a logical explanation for.

We are talking Natt-ian levels of execution here

Scary isn't it. And yes, there were many many many many more examples sadly.

I was watching the Rockets game to see the Harden impact and they run almost exclusively a high P&R offense with Asik/Lin/Harden and it's super effective.

I really think we should be using MT in that way, he can drive the hoop and has the outside shot if someone goes under the screen, same with IT, same with Jimmer. Very simple, very effective.

Just look at that defense!!! Just bothers me so much. You want to know why Evans/Cousins struggle and have to work too damn hard? Look at the Wolves defensively. Nobody within 4 feet of the 3 point line, just daring the Kings to pass it to perimeter.

Guys, unless they hit the shots teams are giving them I can't see how 29 other teams don't play zone. Off the ball movement is the only way to help this, no more standing around.

I really don't think the intent is just pure iso. They start in isolation but there's not much you can do when teams are going to play 5 feet off of Tyreke and James Johnson. They either start making teams pay and develop a rep as spot shooters or things need to change. Once again, look at the defense in those shots, I was really surprised Chicago didn't just zone up the whole time either.
