Kings select Colby Jones at 34th overall after trade with Celtics

I like this kid. Pretty strong physically and his length can create problems for opponents 1-3 at least.

Effort and hustle are the same everywhere you go! He's just like Davion with the motor. (Davion obviously is still the king of Kings in hustle and effort)

Can some cap experts help me understand if we really gain much from the added space?
...
The salary cap will be $136 M. Assuming we extend these offers, we are looking at something like $35 M. I haven't added any holds for our SRP today, because (a) I'm not sure if SRP holds count against the cap, and (b) they are likely be to small enough to make a significant difference.

Second round picks do not count against the cap. It does look like our maximum cap space will be between $35-36M.

While this seems a good amount to sign an impact player, what happens if we use all (or most of it) for one FA?
...
If most of the cap space goes to one FA, can we only offer minimum to fill out the roster? How about Sasha? We lose the MLE, but are any other exceptions available to us? If no, then the above amount will go down by his salary, right? How do we retain Lyles and Len, two guys I would like to see return. I think Barnes is ruled out in such a scenario.

If we spend up to the cap, we then acquire the "room MLE". I forget exactly how much that is this year, but it comes to around $7M, which many think would be sufficient to bring over Vezenkov.

You are right that Barnes is ruled out in such a scenario. It's basically Barnes or cap space. Things don't look terribly great for Barnes being retained this year, but I suppose we shall see.

We might also have a TPE, and I think that can be used to get a player even if we are above the cap (again, not sure). My guess is that if this is used, it will be during the season. Monte will likely try to use the cap space as soon as free agency opens up.

We must have created a TPE with the Holmes trade. It will be good for a year.

I can envision a lineup of

Fox
Huerter (an improved Huerter)
Jones
Keegan
Sabonis

Being a finals team.

I do think O-Max swap with Jones then Keegan at 3 was a little better but I do think that's a finals team above.

I see Jones as a dawg that the Kings needed.

A kind of connector piece. Smart, tough, winner.

Unfortunately I think the Kings lacked a little more of this and I think he'll fit like a glove.

I kind of see him being what Derrick White was to the Celtics.

An obviously huge connector piece.

Different player but same concept imo.

So that's a massive improvement over last year imo.

Wonder what Monte might do in free agency but honestly that lineup above is a finals team to me imo.

Colby looks like a smart player with quick hands, slow feet, not much of a jump, and trouble shooting at the rim or inside the arc. Other than that, great pick!

Feet aren’t that slow. He’s like Tyrese in that he’s not the most explosive player but his instincts and general agility make up for whatever lack of burst he has. Not sure where you’re getting the trouble shooting at the rim thing from either. He’s a pretty crafty finisher around the basket. For the most part, it was his outside shot that was the issue until this season.

Thanks. Always knew that could rely on you.

So, this seems like a cost saving move. Assuming we bring over Sasha and retain Neemias, we have two starters and 2 untested backups for the 3 front court positions. Probably Kevin will be playing the 3 position more, with Monk sliding over to 2 in such cases. Also means that we need to get one starter quality forward, and two decent backups in 35 M. Good luck with that.

Even assuming that one of the backup players will be obtained via the TPE, getting a starter and a good backup with 35 M won't be easy.

We will likely be filling out our roster with some minimum picks type of players. Another reason why we should take a flyer on Oscar.

I am not against cost savings by themselves. Whatever our wishes as fans, for owners, it's a business too, and if they are making money most years, they are more likely to spend when the team is within striking distance. Next year, they have to pay both Domas and Monk, so this is probably a preparation for that. However, I think short term, we take a hit on the court.

Perhaps I should have said "awkward around the rim," as that would be a pretty accurate statement. Most professional athletes are a lot more graceful than Colby Jones. I like his passing, though.

His shot was the only big concern I have with his game.

37.8% from 3 looks great in a vacuum but his FT% was 65.3%. And his FT% has decreased each of his 3 seasons.

As a comparison, Davion shot 44.7% from 3 but 64.1% from the FT line. And Davion had more 3PA than Jones as well (141 3PA vs. 119 3PA).

I think we can all recognize that Mitchell is not the most reliable shooter after 2 NBA seasons. Here’s hoping that Jones’ shot is much more effective, much sooner.
