Kings relieve Paul Westphal of coaching duties

I think the right move was made for the team but I don't feel celebratory about or anything. I wanted to see things work out with Westphal but it just wasn't in the cards, so to speak. Maybe it was just me but watching the team tonight it almost felt like a weight had been lifted and the players played like that too, even when they were behind. I think the relationship between Westphal and some of the players had become borderline toxic and just wasn't improving. Hope the Keith Smart era is more fruitful and more positive.

Getting rid of WestphLOL was by far the greatest move our front office has pulled off this season! I mean, damn, it happened about a year later than I wanted but I'll just be happy that he's gone!

His substitution technique is sorta like throwing peanuts at the wall - expecting to come up with peanut butter.

What a disaster his stay in Sacramento has been.. It has been nothing short of a nightmare!

Mussleman?? Theus?? And now Westphaul? Wtf? How the hell are all these incompetent wannabe "coaches" able to manipulate their way through Petrie and Maloofs job interviews? It's amazing to me!

I'm sorry, but the people on here are idiots. I have never posted negative things, but throwing Coach Westphal under the bus is the wrong thing to do IMHO. So, if Cousins continues to be the spoiled little rich kid that he is then what? Fire another head coach? this was not the coach's fault. Cousin's is the problem and will continue to be the problem because he has no respect for authority.

Really bad idea by PW...but did Petrie know? And approve?
Petrie confirmed during the interview he knew about it. I assume that as Petrie admitting he approved. He also said the Maloofs didn't know. So, if you are going to blame Westphal for the utter mess, you have to blame Petrie too.

Obviously Cousins in your eyes has no room for improvement and Westphal as a coach has no fault in the situation. Regardless Westphal failed at coaching as well.

Do you have links that I can see this? If true then yes..GP need to be blame too. However that is out is his norm he usually keep things locked in the closet until it happened.

We fired the coach not only because of Cousins, but also because of the clear incompetence of that coach.

Also, Cousins believing Westphal got fired because of him might even turn out good for his psyche. Now, he might think he cannot be the reason for another coach being fired, lest he wants everyone to think that he indeed is the problem. I think he is smart enough to know that.

OK ... then what's your reason for why we were repeatedly getting blown out of the game before the 1st quarter ended? Is it cos Cousins has no respect for authority? It's not the record that was the problem, it was what we were seeing on the court. Just compare Westphal's rotations and timeout/play calling with what coach Smart did against the Bucks. Momentum starting to turn away from the Kings - call time out, get the problem fixed before you find yourself in a friggin 20 point hole again.

its sad how we celebrate a man losing his job... but it was inevitable i hope he has more luck in his next job and I hope he remembers his mistakes

THIS is what i was talking about... and why the timing was so abysmal.

Westphal was fired because he was failing miserably as a coach (or should've been). The TIMING of the firing wraps it all up in the Cousins' nest. Cousins has enough baggage both inside his head and externally attributed to him.... THIS makes that much worse. We are going to have YEARS of the same types of anti-Cwebb virtol that kings fand got to enjoy circa 2003 (BEFORE the injury).

<snif> :(

I took it more like Petrie didn't want to throw Westfail completely under the bus and run him over too. Sounded more like Westphal said I'm did this and Petrie was like oh, I guess we need to look like we support you even though your about to get canned.

I don't know, that part of the interview was awkward. My guess was he took Westphal's version of the "trade demand" on his word and approved the statement to later find out that it wasn't entirely accurate and began distancing himself.

You mean he found out Westfail lied about it.

Someone mentioned that Westphal's press release had the FO's blessing yet I have also seen that the FO was bothered by what he said. One of the Maloofs said that the coach had to be supported. In any case, both ideas can exist at the same time: they can say the coach needs to be supported in a player vs coach squabble and at the same time disapprove of the coach. They are not going to publicly disapprove until after he is fired.

I have not seen anything specific to GP.

The guy's been fired. Is it possible for us to stop slinging mud at him and just move on? Please?
NO.

It's absolutely VITAL that the NBA remembers that the Kings organization allowed Westphal to release an official Kings press release that LIED about what Demarcus Cousins said.
DMC never demanded a trade from the Kings. At this point, that can be concluded to be false. Inaccurate. A complete fabrication.

This isn't just about Westphal (who's now gone, thank goodness) - it's about Petrie, and his allowing of Westphal to smear DMC, for whatever organizational reason.
Note, that the entire team protested this, by playing like utter **** - so bad that the FO was FORCED to fire Westphal earlier than they were planning.

If we whitewash what happened, or forget exactly what happened, than we are opening ourselves up to misinterpreting what goes on today, and tomorrow with this Kings organization.

Westphal's coaching sucked before they ever drafted Cousins. he just wasn't able to develop these young players and institute any kind of system or team identity. Plus his constant lineup juggling, feuding with players, etc. This was a long time coming. The Cousins situation was just the final straw.

Not sure if it's been posted. Via Amick:

"I didn't know about any letter," Maloof said by phone Thursday. "We didn't know about any of that. ... We didn't know about the statement or anything like that.
"They made a basketball decision, to sit him for a night and that's the only thing that we do know."

When asked if he was upset by the letter, Maloof said: "Well, we've owned the team 13 years and it's our belief that you keep basketball situations in house and not make them public. That did upset me. ... It's always been our history to keep things in the organization and not to make it public. As far as I was concerned, [Cousins] would sit the bench one night and that's all there was to it."

As I thought, seemed not starting Cousins was simply personal. Seemed Westy was making this up as he went.
