Kings Pre-Draft Workout Video (updated daily)

Favors has a slower release than Cousins, but he has much better form. Releases it from the right side of his head with good follow through, while Cousins releases it from the left side, and his shot is all wrist.
\

I thought both guys form looked OK. Favors gets a little more of his guide hand into the shot than he should. And he does have a slower release, but compensates by having a higher release. But all in all, I thought both guys looked fine. Of course neither has the beautiful form of Kevin Martin. :D

Demarcus ha a sweet looking jumper from the elbow and baseline, nice! He looks more natural and in rhythm from the outside, hmmmm...I'm starting to like the idea of him as a King more and more.

(queue dramatic music)
Right now...
in an undisclosed location...
Spencer Hawes has seen the tapes of Cousins and his ability to drain the three on top of being an interior beast...
moments later, Spencer decides to get an application to work at Arbys.
(music fades out)

hahah, I think the two actually complement each other pretty well. Cousins can do all the rebounding and banging for Spencer. Spencer can do all of Cousins interviews for him (Spencer loves politics)

I don't know what was fine about Cousins' shot. His follow through looked Dwight Howard-esque, and shooting from left side (when you're right handed) can lead to inconsistency.

What was fine about Cousins' shot to me was that it went in at a good frequency. He has a nice quick release and a consistent 15 footer though IDK if he can make anyone pay for overplaying him. Favors can really get off the floor but if he plans to hold the ball that long on his shots he better get a fade going.

How his shot falls in one workout with no one guarding him is not a good context to gauge his consistency.

Karl Malone had to adjust and learn how to fade away with his jumper too. But I do agree that you can't really judge him on this until he's in a game situation, everyone looks good(well almost everyone)and can have a sweet looking jumper unguarded.

Working-out Monroe and Whiteside will hopefully be just a backup plan. And this shows Petrie is really looking to draft for a big in the first round.

But I still see Petrie getting Cousins if he's there. And if not it will depend on the workout between Monroe and Whiteside. If Monroe impresses and Cousins is gone, Petrie may pick Monroe at #5. But if Whiteside kicks Monroe's butt in the second workout, probably Petrie is going to trade down to get Whiteside and let him develop behind Hawes, plus probably another wing (I like Xavier Henry here) that can shoot the lights out and can defend next to Evans.

I'd be fine with 2 of these 3 possibilities.

It's the better of the two possibilities though no? I mean if I'm considering taking him I'd rather see his shot fall in workouts than not. We are aware of the context- now let me be happy that his shot was falling.

I don't know why we are even talking about Cousin's shot as if there is something to worry. Does anyone of us think we are primarily drafting him for those jumpshots?

Who would we rather have?

Hawes/Frye or Shaq/Howard?:D

Of course, but I'm sure they'd rely more on his statistics and game film. I see a big problem down the line with those mechanics. Just look at Dwight Howard, he has awful mechanics like Cousins does and he's gotten worse with his free throw shooting since high school. This is something I'd try to correct right away with Cousins, before it becomes too difficult to change. It's a big problem IMO.

Cousins is a guy who uses his strength and length, but ultimately in the NBA where guys are much stronger and longer than in college, he's going to have to rely on his skills and post moves. If he can't develop a consistent shot, then that can limit his potential and versatility quite a bit. He's not Shaq or Howard, because he's on the opposite end of the spectrum than them athletically. They're great athletes, he's an average athlete for his size, and a poor athlete in absolute terms.

If Dwight Howard had a jumpshot they'd be in the finals. The post-game for Cousins is obviously his primary value, but you really can't underestimate the value of a big guy being able to hit an open jumpshot.

Cousins might be a poor man's Shaq, but he's nothing like Howard.

Greg Monroe and Hassan Whiteside getting another look....I might have been right calling Greg Monroe Petries pick.

Yep: http://blogs.sacbee.com/sports/kings/archives/2010/06/monroe-whitesid.html

I know the Kings have a set workout program so that they can compare guys they test from one year to another. So a second look means that they want to see more specific situations and against other players.

Just my guess, Petrie likes Monroe and wants to match him up with an athletic guy to see if he deceptively slow or really feet screwed to the court slow. I can't imagine Whiteside is a serious consideration at #5.

I'm hoping Whiteside eats Monroe up moving around the floor.

After everything I've read, for what thats worth, I think Monroe is a backup plan if Cousins isn't there at 5. It also will give them an idea of how effective Whiteside might be against a good offensive big.

I agree, I think his workout went too well for us to just pass on him. What this probably means is we are going to trade down if he isn't available(pass on johnson?) to take Whiteside or Monroe.

Man I hope you're right. I'm starting to get nervous about Monroe

I don't think there's much reason to be nervous about Monroe. First, there aren't any strong indications that we would take Monroe over Cousins/Favors if they are still available. Second, Petrie's got a track record of making good picks, Evans being only the latest instance where he has bucked the fan opinion but ended up getting a very good player. If Petrie wants Monroe, then Monroe will more likely than not turn out to be a pick we don't regret.

So does anyone remember the skill level of Eddy Curry coming in as a draft prospect?

DC has a lot of positives, but he does have weight issues and he is not very athletic comparing to other pros. If he is 290lbs at 19, how much will he weigh later?? I don't remember Curry to have the skills like DC, but man there is really a risk to a certain level with taking Cousins.

I think GP wants to see Monroe again because he really hasn't made up his mind yet. I agree its down to DC or Monroe, but he probably wants to something from someone.

Curry had pretty good offensive skills for a big coming out of HS.

Here's a scouting report of him back then: http://www.ibiblio.org/craig/draft/2001_draft/Players/curry.shtml

Well I'll let you worry about that, I'll be enjoying the shots he made in the workout. Did you see those? :D

If it's that big a problem and he's that flawed perhaps you'd prefer Monroe?
