One of the problems that is obvious, and the whole NBA knows it, is all you have to do to get whatever you want against the Kings is stick Boogie in pick and roll....because Boogie is not interested in defending past 10 feet.
If this team is ever going to be any good Boogie needs to get in better shape to slide his feet on the perimeter and guard further away from the hoop. He can do it but it only happens sporadically. If he wants to win as badly as he claims he does he needs to commit himself to better off-season conditioning program and clean up his diet and cut back on the carbs.
We had this discussion before but it is still an issue. I think the team follows the defensive lead (or lack thereof) of their best players (a) Rondo, (b) Rudy and (c) Boogie and these guys take plays off. I don't mean to assert Boogie is out of shape but he's not in elite shape and plays role in our collective incompetence on that end.
There was a good podcast with Zack Lowe about the Blazers and how guys love to play with Lillard and this is big part of the Blazers success. When I listened to the praise and acclaim Lillard was receiving from his teammates and observers, it stood it contrast to Boogie and the culture he has help to create as the teams best player.
This is not to take anything away from his offensive dominance including destruction of the Pelicans frontline tonight. But he bears culpability on the other end of the floor along with most of his teammates. And yeah I know he's a good (great) interior defender but he is too willing too allow uncontested looks on the perimeter and it is either lack of desire or lack of conditioning or lack of respect to the opponent. Regardless it allows for fold jobs like tonight.
