Kings Notes: Adelman wants consistency from NBA officials

HOUSTON - NBA Commissioner David Stern was laying down his edict this week about players and coaches adapting to tighter officiating this season, but he showed that he and other league officials continue to miss the point.

Stern said teams should not expect officials to slack off on the league directives.

"If that's the way we're going to do it," Stern said, "then we will have a lot of 3 1/2-hour games and a lot of players fouling out. And it's not going to be the referees' fault. Ever."

It's doubtful any player or coach will have a problem with the manner in which games are officiated as long as they're done in the fourth quarter the same as they are in the earlier periods, and that officials do their best to call each possession the same way.

Kings coach Rick Adelman said he just hopes for consistency.

"I think if he said the referees were never going to be wrong, then that's ridiculous to say something like that," Adelman said.

"You're going to have a different crew every night, and you have to adjust to that every night. And when you have new guidelines, it takes awhile for officials to adjust to it just as well as the players and coaches."

Adelman said rules are a matter of interpretation.

"You would like to know why someone decided this was the way it was going to be, but what are you going to do? I think everybody in this league does things wrong once in a while ... makes mistakes, so I hope what he meant was their interpretation was going to be consistent. We'll have to wait and see."

Scheduling woes - Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy mused about the combination of activities that sent the Kings and the Rockets to China for preseason games, and then onto the road for three straight to begin the season. "It's interesting that Sacramento and us were sent over to China and both were sent on the road," Van Gundy said. "I don't think that was equitable scheduling, for Sacramento for sure."

I am not sure he will be happy with the results…….. In all sports we must accept imperfection and the occasional bad calls………… In the NBA it is become institutionalized…

I think the root of the problem is, at least in part the favoritism shown to certain players in the NBA…….. The stars, all-stars, super-stars and big names get the breaks and the calls……. The nobodies and rookies don’t………

In the NFL the Vets don’t get to move before the snap……!!!

In baseball the big names don’t get 4 strikes!!!!!

The only thing that comes close is Hockey and much more contact is allowed if not encouraged…… Resulting in less arbitrary calls and petty fouls……

Adelman needs to set a better example for his team………. How can he speak up about the fool standing on the floor whinning about a call as the play continues down the court if he is constantly doing the same from the sidelines??????????

I vaguely remember Adelman in Portland and Oakland…………. I don’t recall him complaining as much about the calls…………..

I don't know where people get the impression Adelman is always whining about calls. In the games I've attended, he may occasionally make a comment but it seems the games I watch on TV always feature him during the one or two times he's doing so...

Yes, he makes noise about bad calls. Virtually every single coach in the league does. I don't think, however, that Adelman is any worse (or better) about it than any other coach.

Bottom line is some of those calls should definitely be protested. At least IMHO.

It also depends on the way the tv guys project things. I have seen lots of coaches complaining through out the game, jvg throws a little tantrum there, larry brown makes big scene, pj does his thing when necessary though he tries to keep it low during the regular season, and every other coach does that. But people get the feeling about certain coaches when they are shown again and again about how they are whining.

But i do think that the league is a big fix either by stern or just by the refs themselves. They have an agenda and just stick to it, most of the games that i watch i get a feeling that one team is supported more than the other by the refs, i havent watched a single meaningfull game where i was unaware of the refs presence. They always seem to make some real stupid calls or one sided calls, where they would call something on one end of the floor and not call it on the other end. The touch foul that the league is promoting will really help the refs decide the game cos its so very easy to defend a call, apparently a defender is always going to be close enough to the ball handler that you can always find a way to blow the whistle.

The other side could be that the other sports dont show up the refs as much as the nba does. There are replays that clearly show the refs mistake (with a bias there too, espn really likes certain teams and doesnt like others ).

Yesterday in the browns ravens game there was a call which looked to me like the ravens defender was encroaching, but they called the browns for offside. I didnt see any replay to show what actually happened, that seemed like a blatant call (with the naked eye ) and even the defense looked like they were moving back giving up the 5 yards. But the call went the other way and the game just moved on, offcourse for the bigger impact plays they do have the challenge.

There are also lots of those interference calls that seem to favour the offense a lot and they dont call the offense as much as they do with defense and the commentators kinda defend the refs and dont try to disect it too much to show up the refs, or make it look like the refs made a botched call. Plus the league could really be trying to increase the point production and maybe they have instructed the refs.

Finally, i dont see any other sports coach talk so much about the refs as the nba coaches do. It should mean something, every other interview they talk about how the refs didnt allow the teams to play or how they decided the game. That is bad and that is fixed. But then why do i watch the game, the same way i go to a casino, trying to beat the odds ;)
