Kings Needs

What do you think the Kings needs are right now?

I think they need to pick up a fourth big out of free agency or camp and a backup SG out of free agency or camp.... the roster seems pretty well set.

We need a backup big, and a PG imo..

We have Garcia backing up Martin if we need it. With the slough of SFs we have Garcia might not see as much time there as he will be backing up Martin. Hopefully Beno can develop into a PG, but if not then we are back at square 1. Evans kind of fits into the SG/PG backup role for now. Swing tweener type. I don't really trust him at SG yet, and I haven't seen him play a traditional PG position yet so I don't want to throw him out there with that job from day 1.

Really just bigs, an interesting idea that has been tossed around is Beno for Dalambert. We'd have to adjust the salaries but we would big, and get rid of a softie who never takes critisism. We'd have a fairly tough team being built then to make up for what softies are left!

Ok I get it. You think Evans is a SG. But where do you get the tweener thing from? the guy is 6'5 220 lbs. Bonzi Wells was 6'5 215. Was he a tweener?

Like I said.. If I am wrong and Evans turns into a great PG then I will be the first to admit it. Will I look like an *** is he succeeds? If that's your generalization than so be it. If all people that were wrong about something are *******s than consider yourself one too.

wow. team needs going into and throughout the season. sign diogu and a defensive big. sort out who is coming and going at the sf position. tell hawes he can block shots and score in the same game. develop team chemistry. IMO since evans is more of a scorer than a distributer we need to find a point forward. I know hedo is 30 but i think he could be the guy that could pull this team together. Evans become scoring option number 1 with kevin taking over the number 2 role he is perfect for. Evans, martin, hedo, thompson and hawes makes a nice squad.

This is faulty reasoning.

Everybody's been wrong about something before. Most people have been wrong about a lot of somethings. Not everybody's been "top of their lungs" loud and obnoxious about what they were wrong about. That, right there, is the difference between somebody just being wrong and somebody looking like an *** when they turn out to be wrong.

Needs this year? Same as last year, pretty much...
1) definitely a defensive big
2) possibly a starting PG
3) leadership
4) chemistry and teamwork
5) a plan

It will be funny to return to this argument if it turns out Gary was right all along... and just to let some of you guys know, thats still a major possiblity...

Unfortunately, there won't be a damn thing funny about it. I respect Gary's right to his opinion but, when you think about it, in order for Gary to be right, Evans has to fail. Which, in turn, means that the Kings fail. I mean, you hate to frame the argument in a "with us or against us" format, but what situation involves Evans busting and the Kings not suffering for it?

If he turns out to be right it won't make one difference to me except for the fact that the Kings are failing as an organization. At least we'll all know when that happens instead of trying to look into crystal balls and call failure before it's already failed. And that's really the only point I'm trying to make.

we need to sort out this SF logjam

Garcia,Nocioni, Casspi, Greene is not going to work. We need to get rid of one of them. Preferably in this order Nocioni,Garcia,Greene,Casspi.

We obviously need a defensive big off the bench. I don't mind if this player is a vet and mentor because hes not going to be playing alot behind JT & Hawes anyways.

We should maybe look to trade one of our SF's for a backup center. If its a defensive vet we get back then im fine with that, if its a young player with potential i'm fine witht hat aswell.

Im just Curious.. who here is willing to part ways with Garcia?
I'm not too excited about that option but if it gets us the right backup center and creates time at SF I'm all for it.

Here's the deal: KNOCK OFF the crap. The name-calling, the pissing contests, etc. all stop right now. If a couple of you want to compare sizes via PMs, please feel free to do so but KEEP IT OFF THE BOARD.

Future comments not relevant to the topic at hand are going to be deleted. Infractions and/or warnings will also be issued where warranted. This is just not what this board is all about.

I'm gonna reopen the thread and hope you guys can act like grown-ups.

The reason why I have kept coming back to kingsfans.com :D

Agreed except about Garcia. He's still our best backup for Martin, and until Martin can prove his skinny ankles can stand up to a 82 game season we are going to need Garcia or someone just as good. Just as good means paying just as much, so keep him and move whoever isn't worth the money come Feb.

I never said Evans would fail. I said he wouldn't make a good PG and that is based off of watching him the last two years, and I always said I hope I am wrong, and I will admit if I am wrong. Everyone else starts bashing me and calling me out like I never have seen the guy play or anything. Or people that had never seen him play start mentioning stats and how he compares to LeBron, Rose, Wade, Paul or whoever. I think he could make a kickass SG some day, but that would mean moving Martin who is currently my favorite King.

Rather than discuss things people rather get irate with me about how wrong I am going to be ect ect.. So I cooled off for a few days and come back and when I posted on this thread get called out again... Seriously... Opinions aside that post by nightguy or whatever was the one that was uncalled for. Yes mine was too but that guys post had nothing to do with the thread (as this one surely doesn't). When I was posting it I didn't even have Evans on my mind. I was going off of him being a rookie, and coach going with more seasoned players off the bat.

Drop it. PLEASE return to the topic at hand. I really don't like having to delete posts, edit comments, etc. You've been here a long time, dude, and you know the rules. If you have a problem with something someone else has said, use the refer a post and one of us moderators will take care of it. Thus it has been and thus it ever will be. ;)

This part of the discussion is over and done. And I'm stepping in and answering because Slim has been having some connection problems.

Well as some have said already we desperately need a defensive big. Who could that be? Idk really. Personally, I'd love to go after Anderson V. and have Spence and JT continue to develop defensively.

The other big need is of course starting PG. The FO thinks we may have addressed this with Tyreke. Hopefully, that's true - but you never know. It'd be nice if Tyreke turns into one heck of a PG, but the possibility remains that he might not.

So maybe we can put an asterisk by that one.

Someone mentioned leadership, Noc could really develop here IMO. Once he is here for a full season, he might take more ownership. I also believe Spencer does have some potential here to step up as team leader as well. And let's face it - this year we will FINALLY have a coach and a staff who can lead as well.

Another area of weakness is just our tendency to play dumb basketball. We need to get more disciplined in our play. I think a solid coaching staff as well as the development of team leadership and the adding of a PG will help here.

So, in recap...

TEAM NEEDS:

a. Interior Defense
(Addressed by: A FA signing and/or young bigs development)

b. Our PG Play *
(Addressed by: Tyreke Evans and Sergio Rodriguez)

c. Team Leadership
(Addressed by: Players beginning to feel comfortable in their roles)

d. Ability to Play Smart Basketball
(Addressed by: Points b and c)

I think the only real needs we have at the moment are back ups for Thompson and Hawes. Preferably at least one of those back-ups can provide some shot-blocking and both are good rebounders. Beyond that I think we go into the start of the season with what we have.

Totally agree. To turn the team into a defensive team, it has to start with the guys who are playing 35mpg, and not the backups playing 12mpg. In our case it needs to start with the guards. A healthy Martin, the drafting of Evans, and a coach with a intelligent defensive scheme, will improve the defense. Then the development of JT & Spencer will finish the transformation. Adding a couple of defensive stoppers to backup the 4 & 5 will be icing of the cake.

PT for the young guys. Let them play & develop together. Hopefully everyone of them gets good, and then we will have talent to trade for those final pieces. GP will find the talent and Westphal will develop it.

shame we couldn't land Hedo (was Geoff even trying to get him btw???)
I wonder if he's planning any other signings or not, Tony McDyess and Shawn Marion are still available...

Well we are really going to see what we have this year. Do our pieces fit together? IF evans turns into a star that gives us a very good 1 2 punch.

From what I'm hearing Hedo is going to get $10M/yr from Portland which is a bit more than we could afford. I've always liked McDyess and the only reason I wouldn't include him in guys we're interested in is because he probably wants to play for a contender at this point in his career. He's the type of guy I'd like to see backing up Hawes or Thompson though. No to Shawn Marion, he's a SF and we have a few of those already.

I feel pretty much the same way... I want to see these guys actually take the court and start to grow as a team. The rest of TDOS is really going to be the tough part. We know our new coach, we know our new rookies, and we're most likely not going to make any further BIG acquisitions. Let's get this car on the road and see what it'll do.

:)

When you win 17 games obviously your team has a lot of areas of possible improvement.

In terms of players and well defined roles, I this team needs an interior defender - ideally a center who can block shots and hold position in the post.

Beyond that?

Improved point guard play. Whether Evans and Rodriguez patch up that area remains to be seen.

Tougher team defense - Evans (and possibly Casspi) will be a start, but collapsing the lane and being more physical is something the whole team needs to do, especially Hawes and JT.

Individual defenders to step up, particularly Martin.

Better post play from the young bigs.

For Donte Greene to start showing some signs of being a player.

Consistent scoring from guys other than Kevin.

A player to step up in crunch time - I don't trust this team in close games.

But most of all this team simply needs it's young players (which is most of the roster) to continue to develop and it needs to not fall into the mentality that it is okay to lose which - if I were to read the body language of the team last year - it seemed they were falling into.

It would be nice to have the same coach for a full season too.
