Kings & Las Vegas Summer League Team

Over the past 11 years I've made an annual pilgrimage 9 times to watch the Kings Summer League Teams. First in Salt Lake City for 6 years, then Long Beach and last year for the first time in Las Vegas. Watching Ronnie Price play was quite an eye opener. He didn't see much time during the season but bet he is in summer league again and on the roster Come late October.

Why? It is fun basketball and gets one a King's "fix" in the dull (NBA wise) summer months.

Las Vegas was a ball last year. And was it hot, in the 90's and 100's 3-4 days in a row. But getting up early for an hour bike ride in the desert was always a good way to wake up. Rooms are cheap then, a motel off the strip can be as little as $40 especially during the week. Tickets for games are cheap too. And Las Vegas never closes.

So once again my brain is thinking about the Kings and Summer League. I'll take a few days off and drive over from Santa Cruz, about a 7+ hour stint, but what the heck.

To fill that summer league roster the Kings have already begun working out prospects for what is usually a 12-14 man roster. So far in the past few days they have worked out the following prospects:
  • Sacramento State's DaShawn Freeman
  • Nevada's Mo Charlo
  • Oklahoma power forward Taj Gray,
  • UCLA 7-foot center Ryan Hollins,
  • Stanford point guard Chris Hernandez and
  • Pacific guard Johnny Gray.
Gotta go find out about these guys. Will update this thread as I hear more about summer league activities.

Las Vegas Summer League runs from Thursday 6 July thru Friday 14 July. All games are at the Thomas & Mack Center. For more info go to:

Thanks Cruz............I remember enjoying your posts about the league last year. Hope you make the trip again.

Chris Hernandez is a stud. The guy is a true leader on the floor. The knock on him is that he is not a huge playmaker. He is more of your 2 guard playing in a point guard's body. Still, the guy has tremendous leadership ability, a never say die attitude, and is about the fiercest competitor I have ever seen. He is lights out from the outside, including 8-8 from three point land in the Portsmouth predrft camp. Plus, the guy is absolutely money in the clutch. In his last two years at Stanford he hit a few game winners, tied a game against Washington by hitting 3 free throws at the buzzer, and always had the ball for the big shot.

Not sure how and where he will fit in the NBA, but the guy is just about one of the best, most competitive people you will ever meet. He oozes heart and confidence, I hope he catches on somewhere. Stanford fans already talk about him as their favorite all time player ahead of the likes of Madsen, Casey Jacobson, Brevin Knight, and Josh Childress (all fan favorites in their own eras). The guy just has a contagious competitve drive.

I hope you get to see him in person Cruz
