Kings interested in Russian guard Dmitry Kulagin (Yahoo)

Who? What's with all these no name players being either signed, interested or worked out for? Just trying to find a diamond in the rough I assume with some of the invites...
 
I feel like PDA and friends are trying to get too cute with the diamond in the rough thing.
 
Oh, I'm not worrying about it.

I just find how wide we are throwing the net to be amusing.

But hey, it worked for Petrie! I mean....Before his soul died and he became nothing more than a check cashing zombie.
 
Somehow I get the sense that front office might be looking for filler players in preparation for losing some current players in a trade.
 
He's a 6'6 guard who is creative off the bounce. He shot 32% from three and his shot looks good. Not very athletic. Has a bit of attitude to him that can be both good and bad.

I am not an expert, but that's what I got from looking at some vids.

His shot looks like it has a very very shallow arc. No wonder his 3pt percentage is bad. Wonder if he can be coached out of that - it just seems like he will get swatted out of the gym in the NBA, and miss a lot just because of the geometry of the whole thing. But there is a pretty significant Russian population in Sac - so it wouldn't be the weirdest thing in the world to see them put him on the bench next to the Indian guy. Might as well. Can't imagine this guy making a noise in the NBA though.

There's nothing wrong with that. and IMO the best place to find that diamond is overseas. This would be a great signing.

I think this is making a move just to say that we were aggressive in becoming better when really the best way to acquire diamonds in the rough is via the draft in my opinion or maybe play pick em from the D-League.

well, as long as it averages 1.7 transmissions I am all in favor :p
 
I wasn't following VTB league this year as no israeli players were playing there this time, but while this is strong league by European standards, "Triumph" is not one of best teams there (it was eliminated easily on 1/4 finals) and 7.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.3 apg is not very impressive in this case.
Also, Kulagin was very fringe player averaging only 2.7 ppg for Russian NT which was very weak in this Euro Qual. tournament (they will probably qualify after 72-68 win over Italy , but in process they even lost to Switzerland!).
As israeli I'm not neutral, but in this forum I don't see much support for signing Casspi which was leading with 19.0 ppg our team which played pretty well, so I don't see why to support such strange move as bringing player which didn't succeded even in middle tier VTB team and Russian NT.
Also, it seems that it's not about "not afraid to mix it up" but more about "having problematic character" as he was ejected in one of Euro Qual. games after punching opponent.

Against the might of the Netherlands, Kulagin could probably walk into the Israel team and be a superstar, no playing time and making the Russian squad is a far greater achievement than getting playing time on the Israel team lets be real here.

Yes, it's not precisely Spain or France NT... But Netherlands is no weaker team than Switzerland. And Israel after some difficalties in the beggining of tournament (OT lost to Montenegro) easily won next 4 games and even palyed really nice game in the process. It's much more that Russia done this time (I'm russian speaker so I've read what Russian NT supporters had to say about their team)

All in all: Russian NT as it was in Qual is not better that Israel (actually they played 2 games in prep. and splitted them) and Kulagin can't even get into rotation there. I don't think he would play more that 5mmg to 10 mpg in our team too as I think our guards Mekel and Halperin (which was big star when played in VTB leading it in assists per game) are much much better players

For big man? Certainly.
For forward? Depends...

For guard? Why? Not at all.

Actually guards of Israeli NT are better than those of Russian NT on this Qual (as the only player of really high level - Shved - didn't paly in the tournament)
Mekel is certainly not "NBA star" as he can't crack rotation in Dallas, his shot is slow and plain bad ... but he's great passer and in Euro he's quick enough to get into paint and score around basket. Actually he's easily the best PG in this Qual. averaging 14.6 ppg, 7.0 apg (with only 1.8 tpg). SG Halperin is very experienced player (which had several very good seasons n Euroleague and Eurocup), very good shooter and very good passer too. There's no guard as good as Mekel and Halperin in current Russian NT. Not even starters Pankrashov and Karasev.
