Kings get their first assistant coach

I am not sure if this deserves a thread on its own so feel free to merge :)

Following Muss

Jason Hamm, Grizzlies video coordinator, is leaving to become an assistant coach under Eric Musselman with the Sacramento Kings. Hamm served many roles with the Griz, and his teaching and workout ability became as important as his video work.

Musselman is methodically putting together a staff.

"I want him to have the staff that he wants and I want to do everything possible to make that happen," said Geoff Petrie, Kings president of basketball operations. "Trying to get everything in place is a bit of a challenge in itself. But he's handling everything well."

Musselman and Hamm's departure leaves Griz coach Mike Fratello with two voids to fill. Fratello still is compiling a list of potential replacements for Musselman.

He hasn't set a timetable for making a hire.

Yeah, not exactly front page news, but not sure what/where I would merge it to, so I guess it stays. Maybe as an official "assistant coaches" thread, although I have no idea how long it will take for the others to be recruited.

Interesting philosophy by Musselman...bringing in a video coordinator as an assistant instead of someone that has more on-bench experience.

Not questioning the move. IT's just...well...different...and that kind of intrigues me.

Bubba Burrage was the teams video coordinator and Adelman made him an Assistant Coach. His resume wasn't exactly Assistant material either so I don't think it makes much of a difference. He will probably be the one who keeps track of the little things(timeouts, fouls, etc...) and work with the guys before games.

Yeah, and Burrage was the last guy int he pecking order. This guy better be to. I don't want a video coordinator being the Head Assistant.

Not really sure why you would think he would be the lead assistant.

Seems like the ideal first hire. They're going to be scouting and what not, why not bring in a guy with video/workout experience to assist you.

You know it is TDOS when we are even discussing something like this. ;)

Wonder what the total number of games in the history of the NBA ever won/lost by a video coordinator is? :p

Im pretty sure there isn't even a record for it...

There was that one year where Cuban and his staff sent in video of Webber and his habit of moving his pivot feet, to the league office during one of our PO games.

We have to talk about it lol. It's our new coaching staff.

Looks like there is only one more spot left

New Sacramento coach Eric Musselman, who was rumored to be a candidate for the Bucks head coaching job last summer, hasn’t wasted time putting together a staff. Scott Brooks, who coached in Denver, along with Jason Hamm, who was a video coordinator for the Memphis Grizzlies, are expected to join Musselman’s staff. T.R. Dunn is also likely to be retained, leaving Musselman with one more coach to hire.

So T.R. is the carryover guy...makes sense. They pretty much canned E.T. along with Rick, and of course Coachie was sent packing all the way back here to the East Coast.

Not exactly a distinguished staff, but that's probably not a big thing. Muss has coached in this league before. If it was Elie or another first timer it would probably be morre critical they had a wise old been around the block vet to anchor things. But Muss is probably going to sink or swim on his own. One thing I would like to see, and I do not know whether its there or not since I do not know the personalities really, is a top assistant type who's a good players coach to help sooth any egos Musselman might bruise. A let off steam guy.

Kind of amazing to think we have to go to some other paper to find out about this instead of getting the info from the Bee.

Coachie handed his resignation in BEFORE the Adelman staff was let go. Whether Adelman was retained or not Coachie had already decided he was going to head back east. No one sent him packing.

if muss brought a 100+ page scouting report to the interview, I would bet hamm spent countless nights on his typewriter :)

that doesnt even include ironing muss's tie and trimming his sideburns

I was thinking the same thing. Where the heck is the Bee with any Kings news? It may not be earth-shattering news, but we all want to know who will be on Eric's staff.

According to the paper today, Elston Turner interviewed for an assistant job with Musselman. He wants to stay. Weird to read after his comments on KHTK last month.

Brooks should work out well, he was a 'Jim Les type' of player in the league that seems like a good teacher, I remember watching him play back in the day. If E.T. stays here, I wonder what kind of relationship he has with the rest of the staff...anyone know what kind of relationship he has with our players, in general?

Can ET be next? I liked him a lot and hope he comes back to be an assistant again, eventhough I'm sure he isn't to fond of the Maloofs

The players respect him.

Rehash...

BROOKS TO KINGS? A source said Denver Nuggets assistant Scott Brooks has received an offer with a hefty pay raise to be a Sacramento Kings assistant, and he is expected to accept.

Director of player personnel Mark Warkentien said the Nuggets late last week gave the Kings permission to speak with Brooks, who declined comment through a team official.

Brooks, who has one year remaining on his Nuggets contract, met with new Kings coach Eric Musselman during the NBA predraft camp in Orlando, Fla.

Nuggets coach George Karl said Saturday "it's a possibility" Brooks might depart and more will be known in a few days.

Brooks is from Manteca, Calif., about one hour south of Sacramento.
