Yeah but Kobe would not have played in Clevland, he was calling the shots even back then.
And also, if we had Kobe, we probably wouldn't have stunk so much in 2003, and probably wouldn't have gotten the first pick.

So, it all works out.

Why? Because we're paying him anyway. Might as well see if he can actually do something/anything to earn even a modicum of that salary.

Yes, he's been in the league a long time but if we're not going to use him at all, why not just buy out his contract?
Just because you have someone under contract, you should play them? If you use that logic, then all 12 active guys on the team should be playing, they are under contract right?

The guys doesn't have one good skill that translates into anything productive on the court. The only reason we got him was to shed a little salary and get a young player in Monia.

Just let him sit on the bench as our emergency C in case someone gets hurt, our use him in a trade to a team that wants his expiring deal. If we want to improve our team into contenders, I don't see how that would be possible with Potato logging any kind of significant minutes. You could buy out his contract if you want, but then you'll just have to replace him with some other stiff of a center to sit at the end of your bench. I'd rather coax Ostertag out of retirement to come be our backup again rather than have Potato doing it... (just kidding about that last part :D )

I didn't say give him major minutes. At least put him out on the court in something other than garbage time once in a while to see if he could possibly spell Miller. It didn't happen. And Miller was clearly wrung out by the end of the regular season. Ostertag was the same way. Adelman let him rot on the bench even though he had shown an ability to at least clog the lane and give Miller a brief respite. Then, after Greg pretty much gave up any hope of seeing playing time, Adelman brought him in when he was clearly out of shape.

I don't think any professional NBA player is without some kind of value. Even a couple of minutes here and there to spell a better player would at least keep them focused on being a part of the team and not apart from the team.

The best way Potapenko can help the team is by planting his rear end at the end of the bench. He can cheer and try to motivate guys, and he can also keep up his intensity during practice and push the guys who are playing to be better. Hopefully he can keep his head in the game, and if an injury occurs, he'll be ready to play his best. That's pretty much all the value you can hope for with someone who has Potato's skillset. And by doing that, he can make a decent living as a professional basketball player. Other than that, I really don't see any other way he's going to contribute to a team that has hopes of contending.

Pot wasn't good enough to be a rotation player on a lottery team with a gaping hole in its middle up in Seattle. Doubt we're going to make any noise with Vitaly logging major minutes inside.
Didn't suggest for him to play major minutes. When I said I'd be okay with Pota here if Brad's gone is obviously not starting at center, but backing up (said that a couple other times lately). Who knows if that actually happens though, I'd say it's a big maybe. At the most, if he's not gone, I think he's a third/4th man on this team.

Also, Brick, he was injured for part of last season in Seattle.

Yeah, everytime he came in the game he just looked like he was out there to foul people. He would just lug up and down the court, and when they'd come in the lane the dude would just slug people. Yeah you don't want people coming in the lane, but you don't want to let them in the lane everytime and then whack em. When should he be put in? When a big man is absolutely obliterating Brad. I mean, Brad gets dominated night in and night out by opposing C's. But when he's letting like a I dunno, Nick Collison drop 20 and 15 on us, maybe Pota might bring in something different.
