When the 2007-08 exhibition season arrives, Kings coach Reggie Theus will have to settle for second billing.
His new team plays Seattle on Oct. 9 at Arco Arena, meaning much of the talk about new eras beginning will be focused on the debut of SuperSonics rookie Kevin Durant. The spotlight will be otherwise dim in an exhibition schedule that takes the Kings no farther east than New Mexico and is heavy on locations tied to the Kings' brass.
Theus, who spent the past two seasons as the head coach of New Mexico State, will return to the Las Cruces campus for an Oct. 16 game against Dallas. And if team co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof haven't seen enough of their home state by then, the Kings face Utah in Albuquerque on Oct. 18. The final non-NBA city destination is the Oct. 26 exhibition finale in Las Vegas, where the Kings face the Lakers

Darryl Watkins hopes he's around to take part in all of it. According to his agent, Mark Bartelstein, the undrafted rookie out of Syracuse is close to signing with the Kings and will attempt to make the roster during October training camp. The 6-foot-11, 258-pound center played for the Kings during the summer league in Las Vegas. According to Bartelstein, Watkins' one-year contract is only partially guaranteed and likely will be signed Thursday or Friday.
