Kings Covet Turkoglu

Are we literally returning to the glory days by bringing back b-jax and now attempting to make a run at hedo and wallace? Apparently the Magic want nothing to do with our "trash" we have been offering them.

I saw nothing in the article that used the word "NOW". It said the Kings hadn't made an offer for some time. It said he wouldn't be surprised to hear from the Kings, which meant to me, that he hadn't heard from the Kings.

Much ado about nothing!

Petrie was probably offering something in the line of SAR/KT, back when Hedo was averaging 14 ppg and shooting 41%, it was worth a try. But with the way Hedo has been playing, the Magic would have laughed at our offer; so naturally, Petrie stopped inquiring. I don't think Petrie will be asking for Hedo or other veterans any time soon.

Wow, that's pretty disrespectful for a GM to refer to anyone as "trash". Well, I guess coming from the idiot that gave Rashard Lewis a max deal it shouldn't be that surprising.

He might still be a little upset over the christie for mobley trade... He got served...

How I see the Orlando side of things: They've got a lot of salary tied up in Howard/Lewis/Nelson ($41M-$47M over the next three seasons, '09-'10 to '11-'12) and Hedo has an ETO this summer. Given that he's going to make about $7.5M if he sticks around but could probably get 5/$60 on the market, he's sure to opt out. As it stands, Orlando is playing without a real PF anyway, as both Hedo and Lewis are SFs. Unless they plan to spend big on Hedo this summer (and continue to play 3 wing players into the forseeable future) they'd have to consider putting Hedo on the market to get an inexpensive big and/or some decent players at MLE-type money. Salmons we have (or possibly Garcia), but Miller isn't likely to be tempting at all, nor is Shelden. Hawes and Thompson and our own picks probably are untouchable right now. So it would come down, essentially, to whether Salmons and Houston's draft pick were enough to pry Hedo away. And I don't see that happening.

From our point of view: The first question is why would we trade for a good player who's just liable to walk at the end of the season? We're rebuilding, so one year of Hedo is superfluous. It's possible that we'd like to chase him in free agency this summer but don't really have the cap space to nab him unless he's "our" free agent. Under that plan, we'd have Kevin at the SG, Hedo at the SF, and Garcia backing up which kind of leaves Greene out in the cold (Salmons would be in Orlando). That's more of a quick-fix (and expensive) rebuild than waiting for Greene (and other future picks) to develop. I love Hedo, but I think it makes more sense for us right now to build around our kids and the next two drafts.

Now that I think about it, Salmons, Greene, and Houston's pick might get it done. Assuming we sign Hedo in the '09 offseason (which would take us completely out of the '10 FA market) that would leave us as:

PG: Beno, ('09/'10 draft?)
SG/SF: Martin, Hedo, Garcia
PF/C: Hawes, Thompson, ('09/'10 draft?), (Shelden cheap?)

Our window probably wouldn't open until the '11/'12 season at earliest unless Thompson and Hawes exceed expectations - but at that point Greene would be ready to contribute big (assuming he ever does) anyway. So I think I'm pretty much "thanks but no thanks" on Hedo.

Think that's pretty much the way to read this article. We tried to get him cheap while we thought we could, but once he blew up last year we knew it was pointless and so stopped.

Yeah, Otis Smith definitely seems to be an egomaniac of sorts by his phrasing, but "trash" is relative here; it means that he obviously isn't getting fair value from us--let's say out of a random musing via ESPN's Trade Machine, we decided to sack Bobby Jackson straight up for Turkoglu--that would work. Or somehow, we sack Kenny Thomas and take Brian Cook and Turkoglu from their hands (hearing that Cook is pissed at lack of PT there). Or maybe it's for Mikki Moore and Quincy Douby. I can definitely see Petrie lowballing Smith here, actually, because we've actually been on the receiving end of lowballed trades for the sake of cap space (see Chris Webber and Mike Bibby trades) and we may actually now want to trade back for some established talent. I guess John Salmons straight up for Turkoglu would work on our part, but not on theirs--not that they want to sack Turk back to us in the first place.

Exactly how I feel about this matter.

It would be expensive and short of getting a franchise type player ( or leader ) and at a big expense. But if it means losing Moore and Salmons for Hedo, then the Kings should go for it. Moore and Salmons starting the #4 and #3 respectively will be the weakest link if we are to build an elite team. We might as well dump them before they messed up the future.

For now, I think the Kings might as well just fast track the development of the KIDS. Having tall players with talents comparable to Hedo, we don't have to salivate on Hedo. With the big talents we have in our KIDS, we can develop an even better version of Hedo.

The only question is how long are we going to wait for it to happen?
