SACRAMENTO, CA, Thursday, October 4, 2007 --- The Sacramento Kings today hired Lafayette “Fat” Lever as Director of Player Development, it was announced by Kings’ President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.
Lever, who owns and operates a construction business in Phoenix, has been involved over the past several years with NBA-based programs such as NBA Cares and Legends of Basketball.

“We’re really excited to have Fat join our staff,” said Petrie. “He had an outstanding career in the NBA. He’s worked with the NBA Cares program and he’s been involved with the community in Phoenix. We think he brings a lot of qualities which will contribute to improving our players’ overall experience in the NBA and life.”

An 11-year NBA veteran, Lever, who was originally selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the 1982 NBA Draft (11th overall) out of the Arizona State, was considered one of the league’s best point guards in the late 80’s while playing for the Denver Nuggets.

“I’m excited about the opportunity,” explained Lever. “I’m confident in the position. I’ve worked in this capacity before, and I know what I’m doing. I’m not overly confident, but I’m confidently optimistic.”

Changed the title -- Director of Player Development is a front office position, or at least it is in other organizations. Always a little fuzzy what it means, but they work with the GMs and sometimes seem to be functioning as almost a substitute for one depending on the organization.

So what exactly does he do? Is he gonna move up in the future or whatever like being groomed for a future position? I'm kinda confused.

Edit -- I was thinking of Director of Player Personnel. Director of Player Development...I would think would be working with guys for thier offseason regimes, maybe coordinating trainers, maybe monitoring guys in training camp/the developmental league? Who knows, in the very most positive world I can imagine, suddenly appointing one could even mean we are finally moving toward a focus shift toward young guys who need development rather than Kenny Thomases.

He's replacing Harrold Pressley who resigned earlier this summer.

Pressley leaves

According to numerous sources, Harold Pressley recently resigned as the Kings' director of player development.

Pressley, who played for the Kings from 1986 to 1990, was hired on March 30 to fill the role. His job was wide-ranging, from helping players with matters on and off the floor to serving as a liaison between the Kings and the NBA regarding any player issues.

Pressley, who traveled with the team, did not return numerous calls for comment. Theus said he hopes to fill the position. Before Pressley's hiring, those duties were handled by committee.

Director of Player Personnel is Jerry Reynolds, and that position deals mostly with scouting. He's in charge of the scouting staff and in the gathering of information on players.

That Pressley thing was odd. Wasn't he doing local TV before he got that gig? so drafted by Kings. Does local TV, suddenly tapped for spot as what was widely viewed to be Artest's handler. And then three months later apparently canned for mysterious reaons. Now to be replaced by Fat just as the season starts. Odd.

Fat was tough as a nail in the mid-late 80's...man, that guy was Jason Kidd before Jason Kidd. Err...you get the point.:D As far as him being hired in Pressley's old position is kind of odd, and the reasoning why Harold left all of a sudden it seemed is kind of weird, but who knows what went on behind closed doors.

I really wonder why Pressley left this job so suddenly. He sounded ecstatic about getting the job in a radio interview I heard. Very odd...

Excellent news. Fat Lever was a triple double king as a player, hope he'll do well in Kings organisation!
