Barring a disaster like the one that made Shareef Abdur-Rahim available to begin with, the All-Star forward is about to become a King. While his agent, Aaron Goodwin, said there are three teams still in the running, it's clear the Kings remain in front and a deal could be made soon.

"We're moving forward to get a deal done with Sacramento," Goodwin said. "We're looking at hopefully getting something done tomorrow (Friday) or Saturday."

Goodwin, however, would not call his client King Abdur-Rahim just yet, not surprising since the player was headed to New Jersey until a sign-and-trade with Portland collapsed on Tuesday.

"I've been at this 19 years, and a done deal is not a done deal until it's signed," he said.

Adding the nine-year veteran to their roster would instantly up the Kings' position in the Western Conference, with the starting five likely consisting of Mike Bibby, Bonzi Wells, Peja Stojakovic, Abdur-Rahim, and Brad Miller. It would also give them a marquee name at the power forward position, which has been manned by Kenny Thomas and Darius Songaila since the Kings traded Chris Webber to Philadelphia in February.

Abdur-Rahim has averaged 19.8 points and 8.1 rebounds in his career, higher numbers than any current Kings player. But part of his production was the byproduct of playing on woeful teams, a trend Abdur-Rahim is looking to end. Abdur-Rahim has said since becoming a free agent that joining a winner was his top priority. He has never played in the playoffs, not in his five seasons in Vancouver or his time in Atlanta or Portland. The Kings, meanwhile, are seeking their eighth straight playoff berth. Asked if Abdur-Rahim was more attracted to Sacramento for financial or basketball reasons, Goodwin answered quickly.

"It's absolutely for basketball reasons," Goodwin said. "He now walks into a position where he continues to play, and there are no questions about his ability to play. He can play with Mike Bibby, and he gives them a low-post presence."

Abdur-Rahim and Bibby played together for four years in Vancouver.

The terms of the potential contract have yet to be settled. The Kings, who are over the salary cap, could use their $5 million mid-level exception for the signing. They could also convince Portland General Manager John Nash to do a sign-and-trade, though Nash has been against the idea in the past. Abdur-Rahim's deal with New Jersey was nixed when he failed a team physical that revealed scar tissue in his right knee. But Abdur-Rahim and Goodwin have insisted that it is the aftereffects of the arthroscopic surgery he had in high school, and that the scar tissue has never hindered his NBA career. Abdur-Rahim has averaged 74 games in his nine seasons. He did, however, miss 22 games in Portland last season after undergoing surgery in mid-January to address loose particles in his right elbow.

Alright! I was wondering when were going to hear some kind of news with the SAR. Jim Koz said 24hrs and it's passed that.

Sounds like things are progressing but I'm really - really curious to see what the terms will be. NJ was going to give Portland a trade exception (which is what Portland prizes most) and draft picks. Does someone know if we hold a trade exception? Seems to me I heard that we did somewhere.

I'm pretty sure they do have at least one more trade exception. A sign/trade would allow the Kings to still use the MLE or part of it on Darius or some other backup PF. That's assuming that they can ship KT somewhere else.

i think it's gonna happen

starting lineup is

center
brad miller

power forward
shareef abdur rahim

small forward
peja stojakovic

shooting gaurd
bonzi wells

point gaurd
mike bibby

this starting lineup alone is good enough to get us to the 2nd round. however, i think we'll make one huge trade that could land us a superstar.

From a basketball and economics standpoint Peja would be the one to go if you can package him and others or picks for a PF and then slide SAR to the SF.

Kings don't have to use any of the MLE on Darius, he has Baby Bird rights. The confusing part is they can only match up to the MLE, although it has nothing to do with the actual MLE. Kings can sign Darius for anywhere up to the MLE number as well. The only problem would be is if a team offered Songaila over $5 mil/per year.

The Kings remaining trade exemptions; I believe they still have one around 1.6 mil, not enough to do a S&T with. And you can't combine TE's.

I've been kicking a similar idea around in my feeble brain this afternoon...Peja and Thomas to Chicago in a S&T for Chandler or whatever variation would work...Shift SAR to SF with Brad at C and Tyson at PF with Bibby and Bonzi in the backcourt.

Now that I like, I didn't like the Chandler deals at first, because when Peja was gone, there was a huge hole at SF, but with Shareef at a position he excels in (SF), Peja is no longer needed.

Either way, even with a starting line up of Bibby, Peja, SAR, Wells, and Miller............I am much more excited about this upcoming season than a month ago. I am still waiting for the Mother Of All Trades to happen. Please Petrie.

I bet Petrie is very happy with this roster right now, with just a little more tweaking. Next offseason, if this team doesn't perform, the pieces will be there to make a huge trade; Peja's FA (could be a S&T), Corliss and Skinner in their final year of contract, Wells a FA, Bibby and Brad still have huge trade value, some young talent. Plus, Shareef will no longer be BYC after next season if he signs for the MLE as a FA. (I think)

Petrie will still try and dump Corliss. I'm not so sure about KT, either way, he won't have any takers this year, so hopefully KT will relish a 6th man role. I'd still like to see the Kings add an experienced C to backup Brad, and a pure SF to backup Peja.

We'll see...

the kings used the 1.6mil exception on the jason hart trade with the bobcats

I kind of like the team team with the addition of SAR, however the bench might be a bit shallow compared to other well-stacked bench teams. The PF and SF backup positions would be solid, but the C and PG are question marks in my book. The SG position is a tossup, hoping that Garcia/Martin can play at least to their potential on a consistant basis, I wouldnt worry too much. Im hoping at least we use the MLE on Evans to bolster the bench with rebounding and defense to at least keep the other teams bench from scoring on us, even though we might not be offensively that great.

I like it and Pedja isn't going anywhere. With SAR and Bonzi in our lineup, who you gonna double team? Pedja? I don't think so 'cause you now have two agressive options to the bucket, Brad to bang-rebound-shoot adn Bibby. No, I think that 5 would be awesome and the bench would be really good too.

I agree with Cruz, lets just focus on a solid rebounder to come off the bench, like a Haywood or Evans type guy and we should be fine.

We would be kind of easy to defend with that team on the floor. We need 3pt shooters to keep defences in check.

Agree, keep Peja and look for bench rebounding.

Jason Hart is a question mark? How is that, he brings defense and can run the court.

For you that havent read my post Trade peja ?, read it...Cause what i said will come through with the deal of Shareef.I said find the replecement for Doug and Vlade. For Doug the kings found Wells, a great defender , agressive , reminds in many ways of doug. For Vlade , Shareef is great replecement.I was thinking about great PF with passing style. Although not so good passer as Vlade offcourse, he is not bad, avaraged 3,3 one year.. Vlade had similar numbers many years. And offcourse he beets Vlade in different ways as shooting, speed , he is more athletic. I was wright , this team will look like that one 2 years ago, when they were absolutely the best team in world, where they started with vlade, miller, peja, doug and bibby... I hope injuries will not spoil things up this year, and i hope they will sign Rahim.I think the chemistry will be as good as that 2 years ago, maybe they will be even better, cause I think both wells match up with doug and even more , and same with Rahim, he can give even little more than Vlade.. And I think Peja will shine this year.Cause he is the shooter now and he will get the ball much more, and the passing on the team will be much better. Last year it was peja, mike and mobley , 3 of the best shooters in world. That is one too much on a team, its was too much about the 3`s. 2 years ago it was perfect balance between passing, low post , and outside shooting. Last year there was no balance at all, too much outside shooting simply. With better low post game, and passing, both peja and miller will be like 2 years ago. Go Kings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I agree with you guys, Peja's staying. I think the rebounding off the bench will be ok with Kenny Thomas, I'm rooting for off-the-bench shotblocking.

Sadly, Steven Hunter is on his way to Philly.

the pg is pretty solid... Bibby/Hart/House is a good look!

we need a defensive C........ we have plenty of players that can put up numbers all we really need is a defensive stopper that is 6'10 to put up against all the big men in the league(shaq, duncan,kg,stoudemire etc etc)
