CUTTINO, RAY AND MIKE
While Labor issues will likely impact the speed in which many free agents get their next deal, the biggest names that will hit the street have basically the same goals in mind, over the next few weeks we’ll look at three key free agents and their situations. This week: The Two Guards:
RAY ALLEN: The Seattle Supersonics had tried all year to get a deal done with Ray Allen, at a barging price of $70 million over 6 years. Ray’s agent believes Ray can easily get $94 million from other teams in a sign and trade deal, and has been pushing the Sonics to come to $90-$92 million with incentives. Talks stalled, and abruptly ended – after an amazingly playoff performance which had Ray basically mapping out free agent plans to media after games – The Sonics re-opened talks, hoping to get an “extension” done before July 1st when Ray would become a free agent. Word is the Sonics will go to $85 million with incentives to keep Ray – The question is will Ray’s camp sign the deal knowing that any new collective bargaining agreement will increase the salary cap, giving more teams cash to spend under the cap and making the luxury tax margin higher allowing teams to spend a little more.
MICHAEL REDD: With the Bucks holding the top overall selection, Michael Redd is said to be happy with the outlook in Milwaukee and knows the Bucks will pay him – so he wants to explore his options and see what else is out there. Redd is said to be pleased with the retaining of Terry Porter as head coach, so at least for know it seems like he’s Milwaukee’s player to lose.
CUTTINO MOBLEY: Rumor has it the Kings will not re-sign Cuttino Mobley and in exit interviews anointed Kevin Martin the starting two guard next season. Whether or not the Kings would agree to a sign and trade is unknown, but Cuttino is not expected back – that makes three teams that bailed on Cat in a 10-month period. Doesn’t bode well for a guy looking for an $8 million a year payday. The Denver Nuggets are rumored to be the most interested in Cuttino, so the question becomes can Denver get a deal consummated with Sacramento to obtain Cuttino in a sign and trade. Also don’t be surprised if Cuttino ends up back in Orlando now that new management is in place.
