Jones: DeFox wants to channel Chris Paul/Bagley grapples with first challenge

This RIGHT here!! One of the things I hated about Jason Thompson and some of our other rookies is they never figured out that they needed to SLOW DOWN and let the game come to them. College ball is a bit more frenetic, fast paced, react off instinct and not thought/experience. That's why JT fouled so much, he never figured out the right anticipation of the game.

In the NBA you have to be patient but quick, probe but dont rush it. The fact Bagley understands that before his first ever game just from practices is amazing. I think David Robinson was correct about him. Game recognizes game. Bags is going to contribute right away and be a force for years. As long as he can get his strength were it needs to be without adding bulk and remains healthy dude will be top 5 at his position for years. Such a stud.

Kinda hard to emulate Chris Paul and push the pace last year when you had Z-Bo dragging anchor and the entire half court offense revolved around Randolph isolations.

In order for Fox to shine and grow as a player this year Z-Bo better not be starting. Z-Bo does have some use as a bench scorer in small spurts when guys like Fox and Bogdan are off the court and there is nobody else to create offense.

If Fox is going to succeed and become a star though its time the organization and Joerger start actually putting him in a position to succeed.

Agree with this wholeheartedly, and I love ZBlow Smoke. But at this point ZBlow should be a change of pace big off the bench running pick and rolls with Mason and Bogie.

I would have preferred to see Fox say he has to do better at getting the ball to teammates where they need it to score.

Hearing he wants to emulate a point guard who is hated by most of his teammates is not encouraging.

Weren't the reports of teammates hating Paul overblown? IIRC, the main issue is that he's a real competitor, and expects the same from his teammates.

After a decade + of iffy effort from this team, I can dig Fox wanting to push himself and his teammates.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether or not he can actually back it up on the court.

Yeah I could be wrong.

I just get a sense from Fox that it’s too much about “me” and not enough about the team. He talks about scoring at all three levels versus doing a better job of finding teammates..... if he were our starting 2 Guard it would be less of a problem... I guess playing with Bogi it’s fine but I hear a lot of Russ and Lillard in him and it’s not winning basketball.

Perhaps I’m wrong. I hope so.

See, if we were to push the pace on a rookie going 82 games, I would expect an injury of some sort with how fast Fox really is. The rookies needed to get acclimated, all of them had rough patches throughout the year, and all of them had good stretches as well. Now it's year two and the training wheels need to come off and let this thing ride.

Ummm, Lillard and Westbrook are IN THE PLAYOFFS each year. I fail to see a wrong mentality here. It's not like the Kings have ever won a championship in Sacramento.

If Lillard and or Russ had KD, Klay and Draymond your argument would hold ZERO water.

Fox is definitely score first at this point in his career. He'll probably always be score first, honestly, but that isn't so bad in today's NBA.

And unlike a guy like Westbrook, who is unapologetic in his stat chasing, Fox seems fairly self aware. I'm pretty sure he's mentioned improving his play making multiple times.

Now, it's one thing to talk about it, and it's another thing to be about it, but at least Fox recognizes playmaking as a weakness of his.

It'll be interesting to see how he's developed as a player in year 2.

If Fox plans on being an Alpha Dog Sniper, then he better shoot a lot better than he did last year.
Modeling his game after Paul is a lofty goal. Paul was already doing 16-8 in his rookie year. Same Age as Fox.
I can see Fox's shooting percentage going up. I don't think he will ever be as versatile as Paul, though. Paul has averaged 10 assists his entire career. Paul's BB IQ has been off the charts since the beginning of his NBA career. I think Fox can be a solid starter in the NBA. He will have to make a big jump to be an All Star.

“At my house it was set up where I had a TV on the floor and then a TV above it,” Fox says. “I’d sit on the couch and have a laptop and iPad. The TV, honestly, you probably couldn’t hear the volume all the time, because if there’s a game on, I don’t need to hear it. I could just watch it. I could have that on and be playing a video game [on the screen below it], and then [on the laptop and iPad] watching the show that I want or be on YouTube. I don’t know how I do it but I can literally process all of it. I’ve gotten so used to it that it’s normal now. I do feel like multitasking off the court does translate to doing things on the court. As a point guard, you basically have to remember five positions. You gotta see everything. If you’re a point guard and can’t process stuff quickly, it’s going to be tough for you. I do feel that helped me to be able to process more than one thing at a time.”

I thing some might be fretting too much about Fox setting up team mates.

So that's going to make him a brilliant PG? Multitasking around the house on social media? I will bet my mortgage he will never be as good as CP3. I can see improvement happening. But, that comparison he made to basketball is not even linear.

I am glad you see the correlate. I don't. In fact, that scares me to think Fox sees the connection between the 2. Sounds vaguely like WCS and his tired smack of being on the same talent level as Cousins, Davis, and Embiid. Laughable not Laudable.

Fox is saying mostly the right things so hopefully Joerger leaves behind that offense that was successful during the Clinton administration.

Not a fan of Fox saying he doesn't want to play in Vegas. I doubt you'd hear Bagley or any of the other guys say something like that.

The one thing I can't hate on him is his ability to QB the game at his stature.

Yes he may have. He didn’t mention it in that interview however. That was my point. Could have been an oversight and no big deal but it just felt slightly off to me. We shall see.

Don't worry about being Chris Paul be DeAron Fox and play to his strengths and improve on his own weaknesses, he will never remotely even be a similar player to CP3 dude is a athletic freak who needs to play to that.

I pray this is not another WCS wanting to be Porzingis situation players just need to be themselves and work hard.

Oh geez people. We seem to be working awefully hard to criticize a young player who has lofty ambitions about trying to learn from and emulate one of the greatest point guards of all time.

Generally it is true that Fox comes off a bit as a me-first, scoring, self-proclaimed leader kinda guy dating back to last season. But I don't have much issue with that as long as he puts in the work and walks the talk. Fox at his best was never going to be an elite playmaker anyway, and what he's saying is very much in line with his strengths. It is not comparable to Willie Porzingis Stein who simply refused to do what the team needed him to do. This season is going to be an important one for him though, after a very lacklustre rookie year.

That would be a relatively safe bet because even though I disagree with the notion I've heard multiple writers, bloggers, journalists, and media personalities refer to CP3 as a future hall-of-famer. If Fox is even close, it will be a great time for Kings fans. What does a career look like that is just outside of the Hall of Fame for point guard? Tim Hardaway? Gary Payton? Mike Bibby? Penny Hardaway? I take any of those as aspirations for Fox

CP3 is easily gonna be a HOF'er, he's sustained excellence for over a decade now, and still going strong. This is great news.

Paul and Fox are my 2 favorite PG's in the league.

Here is an example of what I’m talking about. The attached image shows Bogi’s shots and attempts with Fox on and off the court and overall.

You can see what Fox’s ability to collapse defenses does for Bogi’s shooting percentages. Bogi’s shooting percentages from the corner 3’s are a ridiculous 50% and 75% from the right and left corner 3 respectively. But the total attempts only increases .2 with Fox on the floor!! Instead you see Bogi’s mid range attempts go up where Fox penetrates, tries to shoot, can’t and dumps it to Bogi.

These numbers indicate pee poor point guard play. If someone shoots 75% from 3 when you are on the floor you damm well need to get him the ball in that spot... This specifically is where Fox has to improve. 0C510BB4-0E4D-42D3-9CBD-5A38E4C0A57C.png

This article is music to my ears. It is mind-boggling to me that the Kings were last in pace last year, which is phenomenally bad for a team with Fox, WCS, Hield, Bogs, Skal, Jackson. I love the intent. Now we have to see some action.

I like the fact that Fox is studying a HOFer guard like Paul. I would enthusiastically recommend he also look up another HOFer guard who is no longer in the league, but is very familiar with pace - Steve Nash. According to Wiki he is a part-time consultant for the Warriors. I don't know if that precludes him from talking to a Kings' player, but I would look into it. I've never seen a smarter guard than Nash and I bet he knows more about pace and point guard play than anybody on the Kings' coaching staff. Another HOFer he should look up is John Stockton. He may not have the same experience with pace as Nash, but he sure as heck knows what it takes to play point guard. Stockton is an assistant coach on the women's basketball team at Montana St. Talk about being underutilized.o_O If I were in Kings' management I'd be making a full court press to hire Stockton in some capacity as a mentor to Fox.

This is an educational stat sheet. It shows both the need for improvement, but also it shows the incredible potential as well. With Fox collapsing the D, Bogs has many more wide open opportunities, but he's not getting enough of them. It also makes sense to me that Bogs gets less opportunities in the right corner because Fox is left hand dominant at this point in his career. Many times he will come up the floor on the left side and not make the cross court pass. These are things that can be corrected. It shouldn't be all that difficult to change this pattern and with coaching and study it can be corrected fairly quickly, imo.

I agree. I’m only hard on Fox because as this sheet shows he already opens up shots for his teammates. The problem is he doesn’t get them the ball in the right spots. If he plays the right way he could be great.

They say people are motivated by love of competition, fear of failure, or the desire for glory. Fox is clearly the latter. It’s our role as fans to give him glory when he plays the right way.
