Joe Maloof interview-Sportsline 1140

Grant: Do you think the refs with the Lakers series worked that game last night in Connecticut?

Joe: I think so. I think they did.

[Laughs]

Mike: Joe, that didn’t take Grant too long, did it? The first thing out of his mouth.

Joe: Yeah I know-…

Grant: Joe that---

Joe: Its part of basketball, but its very very upsetting. It’s just a shame we had to lose that game. We had it won and then for them to pull that call—the most sickening call I have ever seen as an owner—

Grant: Yep...-

Joe: of a basketball team. Gavin is sick to his stomach. It was wrong! It wasn’t right!

Grant: You know what Joe—

Joe: It’s a bad call and it’s not fair—

Grant: It’s not crying sour grapes here. It’s the reality of the situation and when you get to this level and when you’re dealing with really a championship on the line—and you know its still up for grasps—but the point is that call can cost you—and again I don’t have a crystal ball anymore than you do—but that is a call than can cost a team a championship!

Joe: Well, you’re right, absolutely. I don’t mind losing if it’s fair and square but when something like that happens it’s obnoxious and it’s annoying and it’s not right. It’s bad for the league. And these games have been fabulous. I don’t know what people think of the WNBA, but we’re starting to get some more viewers around Sacramento and that area. Let me tell you it is exciting, great basketball. These girls play hard! And we’ve couldn’t be more proud of this team that Coach W has put on the court.

Mike: Well you’re right the first two games have been as exciting as you would want. Unfortunately, the second game did not come out as you want to. What does it mean for your family and your organization to be hosting the finals in Sacramento?

Joe: It’s great. We’re thrilled about it. We are very proud. Whisneat and Coach T have done an excellent job. They put together a wonderful team; they made a lot of changes this year. We were picked to finish last in the league and to win first place in the Western Conference as well as the Coach of the year and the most improved player with Nicole, says a lot about the team Whisneat’s put together.

Grant: Let’s face it, its game 3 Sunday, game 4 Tuesday, I would think Arco Arena would—you are going to see a lot of people going to these games.

Joe: We’ve had some die-hard Monarch fans; we’ve had some really great Monarchs fans. Unfortunately, we haven’t filled the building as many times as we want—one time this year. But hopefully people will come out for this game, support the Monarchs and get the city a championship. Because we’ve got to win these two, I don’t want to go back to Connecticut.

Grant: Nope

Joe: It’s a tough place to play

[Mike asks Joe about the casino; Joe says he was impressed, its great facility, had a lot of fun, treated them well, but unfortunately they got a bum wrap with the refs, but we’ll see what happens on Sunday etc…]

Mike: So do you just hide your emotions better than Gavin, or does he take it harder?

[Laughs]

Joe: Actually, I’ve never felt that badly after a game, because I’ve never seen a call that bad! Here’s what we have to do that, we can’t—after today we can complain about it one more day, and after today we’ve got to forget about it and go on a try to win the title. Forget about it, put it behind us. Accentuate positive things and see if the girls can bounce back and try to get the next victory.

[Grant asks Mike about Gavin being on ESPN’s hot seat…both say he did well, ranking the sports owners etc…]

Mike: When you look at what happened with Demaya Walker last night, and the fact that it was a tough night for her and she took total responsibility for that-- as an employee of yours, as a player that’s somebody on one of your teams, what do you think when someone makes a mistake like that, owns up to them? Do you think it’s your role to say something to them or do you trust the coaches to do something to handle that?

Joe: Well, first she played a great game. Demaya played a wonderful game, she’s had a great season. We are all very proud of her, but…[inaudible, something about mistakes]…Whisneat told them not to give up any 3’s , and unfortunately she came down and double teamed that one lady in the paint and left her girl wide open and so that’s what hurt us. But we have to learn from our mistakes. I called Whisneat after the game and asked him why didn’t he just foul her? Why didn’t you just foul her and giver them the two free throws. Every time we let a team take that last 3pt shot, we lose [DUH!—sorry back to the interview ;) ) Robert Horry, it goes on and on….it never works, just foul them, get it over with, let them make one FT, miss the next and we’ll get the rebound and win the game. I don’t agree with letting them take that 3 pt shot to tie it or beat you. I don’t like that.

Grant: Well I know one thing, you are not going to like if you are back on an airplane Friday going back to Connecticut either—

Joe: Yeah

Grant: I should say Wednesday, hopefully you’re not. But, you know what Joe, these are probably going to be the two most exciting games every played at Arco Arena [totally agree there, Grant! :D ] for women’s basketball. So, you’ve got that to look forward to, it should be a lot of fun.

Joe: Yeah, we’ll have a great time. Hopefully, all the fans we’ll come out and support them, they deserve it.

[The interview ends with Joe telling Grant he better come out, saying he bad mouths women basketball. Joe says give it a chance, its great basketball. Grant says he as gone to games and he doesn’t say anything bad about the WNBA]

Great interview. Joe Maloof half way seriously took Grant Napier to the carpet about his bashing the WNBA. Napier (that hypocrite) tryed to say that he enjoys the WNBA and will be there on Sunday.

Awesome interview. This is great exposure for the team. So many Monarch fans & basketball fans called in following the interview. Another talk show host filling in for Koz,'' Frank Redd '' came on next & even more fans called in. A great night for sports radio & for the Monarchs. We will have a tremendous crowd for these finals. Frank Redd has always been supportive. I used to call his show when I worked nights, he came on after 10pm. A cool, hip, talk radio host.

Thanks for running the interview.

To be fair and accurate Grant doesn't bash the WNBA he just doesn't talk about it. Of course, no one talks about it between 4-7pm.

Grant said the reason he doesn't talk about it is because no one calls in to talk Wnba. He says he won't bring it up. So caller's flood the air waves....Monarchs talk is alive and well?

Nape takes his kids to 3 -4 Narch games a year.

Thanks for the transcript Reina. I didn't catch all of it earlier today.

Was great to hear all the Monarch calls.

Once again Frank Red proved why he deserves the 9pm - Midnight slot. Him and CD would be great.

Grant makes me sick. I agreed with him that nobody calls to talk about the M's during his time slot (folks used to, I remember hearing a lot of calls on his show after the M's finally beat Houston at ARCO several years ago). But he's not the most welcoming of the littany of hosts on KHTK and I do very well remember hearing him make backhanded slaps at MonarchsTalk and that and the fact that I can't stand the guy is the reason why I will never call him.

Frank Redd has always been supportive of women's basketball, he had Kedra Holland-Korn on one night back when she was a San Jose Laser and wanted her to talk about her league and a special dads and daughter promotional night the Lasers were having.

Thanks to all the fans who called later in the day, I was irritated listening to Napier claim that nobody wants to talk about what's going on here. No Grant, nobody wants to talk to YOU about what's going on here.

Can I now add my "friend" Marcos Breton to my Napier list. I just got done reading his column too. I don't have a problem with him having a negative opinion about the W. That's fine, its a free world. But correct me if I'm wrong here, but wasn't he the guy who ripped M's fans and players a couple of years ago for being whiners about the way the ball bounced against them in the WCF against LA....and who subsequently came on M's Talk the next night to explain his position by first saying how much he LOVES the WNBA and LOVES the Monarchs? And how he had even decided to stay home to watch WCF game 3 instead of covering a new A's minor league callup making his debut that night at the Coliseum? But now all of a sudden when this team finally gets to the big dance, he's have a @$#@ fit because the Bee is covering it and because he's not interested?!?!??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????? That doesn't even qualify as being a fair weather fan. I mean c'mon. If I could type something without expletives I'd write him to ask him to convince me he's not at the top of the hypocrite heap.

Sorry Marcos if the Bee had to put its coverage of the Green Bay Packers training camp (or some equally mind boggling coverage of some other STATE'S team) on hold to move the Monarchs to page C1 for a freaking week and a half.

No one talks about it because HE doesn't talk about it. I am an 1140 listener from..... The Rise Guys to Napier and Lamb to Kozimor to Monty Until Midnight and I hear other callers talk about the Monarchs on their shows.

Napier just believes that the Monarchs are beneath him, his show and his listeners. He can hide behind the "Ratings Card" all he wants to. They ain't calling about it because he ain't talking or thinking about it. I am not saying that he should have an open forum to talk about the Monarchs exclusively from 4-7, but respect the game. At least mention it and be inviting to other things besides the Kings and the Raiders.
